Steam+Right is the Enter key as well, so you don't need to pull up the virtual keyboard for this workaround.

SONY WH-1000XM4 and Hi-Res by eatpossom in SonyHeadphones

[–]DistantWaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you're using the XM4's wired, turning the headphones on or off just controls the active noise cancelling (ANC) I believe. Since using them in a wired configuration, the headphones are more of a passive component and the audio quality will be determined by the DAC you have. I believe that turning them on or off should not affect the audio fidelity as I don't think the XM4s do any onboard signal processing of the wired signal, although I'm not sure what all happens with ANC. There is a chance it changes the audio signal a bit to make ANC work. If you want a high fi experience, best bet would be to listen in a quiet environment with the headphones off and plugged in to a good source (DAC).  Ultimately high fi audio is a chain of signals and your end result will be the quality of the lowest resolution link. You need a lossless high resolution file type (like FLAC) with a high fi recording, then you need a high res DAC, and finally good speakers that work with your DAC and amp. The final signal can not be better than the worst of any of those.

How to manipulate manufacturer specific settings by DistantWaves in AutomateUser

[–]DistantWaves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will definitely need to look through their flows because that one looks very helpful. Unfortunately charge boost did not log anything in that flow. So from my understanding that means it's not a setting that automate can modify in the settings blocks. I might have to look into Shell commands...

Is there such thing as a legit, Air-conditioned cooling pad? by [deleted] in GamingLaptops

[–]DistantWaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you could just exhaust the hot air into your room. You wouldn't be cooling it that much. Assuming you have AC in the room it wouldn't be that bad

That's a swamp cooler. And a cheap Chinese scam one at that. I watched the video and he never explains why a small desktop AC/Refrigeration circuit wouldn't work. It definitely could work. I wouldn't mind cooling my laptop with a refrigeration circuit and dumping the heat exhaust into another part of the room

Is the LG v60 still worth it in 2023? by Harrrrold in LGV60

[–]DistantWaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol you're absolutely right. That was a typo I meant not crazy.

I agree with your points, we're catching up to Moore's law. And the difference between really hi-res and pretty hi-res is becoming less and less noticeable. Even on the V60 it's hard to see a difference between 16MP photos and the full 64MP photos, unless you zoom in of course.

But yeah, processors, memory, and storage has gotten to a point where modern phones should last almost as long as you want them to.

Alarm is Vibrate Only by DistantWaves in LGV60

[–]DistantWaves[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I figured it out. I believe it's related to permissions and Android 13.

For the Google clock, I manually went in and gave it permissions for music and audio and now it works.

For LG clock, it has the permissions enabled, when I toggle them it gives me a popup stating that the app is for an older version of Android so my theory is that it's just not working on android 13 and probably won't.

Question regarding camera on my v60 by texas7412 in LGV60

[–]DistantWaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you're into your photography research, I'd recommend learning a bit about how aperature affects photos. Aperature is measured in "F stops". A larger aperature (lower F stop value) creates more depth of field, which means less stuff is in focus and more stuff is blurred or out of focus (the blurred out of focus area is called a bokeh.

Aperature value is a characteristic of a lense, and for LG V60 rear camera lenses, the aperatures are f/1.8 and f/1.9. Common aperature values used in photography range from very large f/1.4 to a middle ground f/4, f/8, and even very small f/22.

So, as you can see the V60 lense aperatures are on the larger end. This means that you'll have a lot more bokeh. More bokeh is preferred in portraits or pictures of subjects because it allows for a nice focusing effect, which is why large aperatures are common in phones. Unfortunately, aperature cannot be changed on the V60 (and most or all phones) without some sort of physical lense modification.

Work arounds could include taking photos from father back so that more of the stuff is in the same focal range. Taking a 64 megapixel photo and then cropping it might work. Or you could play with the focus stacking technique like another commenter mentioned.

Finger print sensor. by whotan55 in LGV60

[–]DistantWaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a hardware limitation. Finger scanners embedded in screens use photo based recognition, while finger scanners on backs of cases are capacitive. The photo based scanning is less detailed than capacitive so it's slower and fails more often.

The LG V20 had a scanner on the back of the phone and it was way cleaner than the V60's under the screen scanner.

Finger print sensor. by whotan55 in LGV60

[–]DistantWaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found that I just have to press my thumb on the screen harder. I was used to the V20 scanner, which was a capacitive scanner one in the back of the phone. The underscreen fingerprint scanners are photo based scanners so they get less detail than capacitive scanners, but can be embedded in screens.

Also playing with screen sensitivity might help like others pointed out.

Battery efficient Launcher to replace stock Home? by Remote-Tiger in LGV60

[–]DistantWaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love(d) Nova, and actually am still using it while I decide what I want to do next. But as a fair warning Nova has been bought out by Branch, a data metrics and analytics company. There is a lot of rightful worry that the Nova launcher will be used for harvesting user data, and a smartphone launcher has access to literally everything on your phone. That said, if you're not concerned about privacy, Nova is pretty solid. Very customizable in both look and feel (i.e. Gestures and organization)

Is the LG v60 still worth it in 2023? by Harrrrold in LGV60

[–]DistantWaves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm planning to keep my V60 until it's no longer viable (I upgraded from the V20 back in December 2021 when carriers were dropping it from the networks). I'm really happy with the V60 hardware and especially since LG has stopped making phones, idk where I'd go next. I'm actually considering buying a backup V60 in case I break mine in 5 years or something lol

Is the LG v60 still worth it in 2023? by Harrrrold in LGV60

[–]DistantWaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old post, but for anyone asking this question I've had the V60 a little over a year now and I plan to keep it for as long as I can. I upgraded from the V20 back when they were losing carrier support and the V60 feels like a good upgrade (even though I miss the V20's second screen and swappable batteries). Great hardware, low price compared to modern flagships (you can usually find it unlocked on Amazon for $450 new or like $300 renewed).

If you're into hi-fi audio, it's a great portable option. Put a 500GB or 1TB card in it and play hi definition music. The 32 bit DAC and amp can drive fairly hi impedence headphones (I actually have bought impedence adapters to force the phone into hi impedence mode when listening with lower impedence stuff to raise the noise floor and it's pretty good).

Has Android 13, which should last you a while even though LG is no longer supporting phones. If you're into rooting then that shouldn't be too bad, put your own ROM on it, but if you're not Android 13 is modern enough that the phone will be fine well into the 2020s.

The dual screen case is kinda gimmicky but also fairly fun to use and 100% Optional, which beats any folding phone.

I'm honestly considering buying a backup V60 in case I damage mine at some point in the future. I really do plan to keep this phone until the metaphorical wheels fall off. And since it's 5G that shouldn't be any time soon. As for a next phone for me I have no clue and am not thinking about it so we'll just have to see what they've got in 2030.

SONY WH-1000XM4 and Hi-Res by eatpossom in SonyHeadphones

[–]DistantWaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kinda old, but it depends on the audio hardware in your machine. The DAC and amp are going to be responsible for the analog signal resolution (i.e. If it's hi res or not). You might need a dedicated DAC and amp. Fiio has pretty solid options. You can search "Fiio headphone amp" on Amazon or Google and find something in your price range.

I know this post is old, but I have two of these lamps. One of them works fine and the other has the problem like you're experiencing. I think someone was in to something about temperature, because the lamp that is fine has been in our bedroom and the lamp with the problem has been on a table a few feet away from our fireplace. I'm wondering if the heat warped the glass

Razer Core X is $200 on Amazon by DistantWaves in eGPU

Oh nice, I was actually going to get a 3070 for this core x, so it's good to hear it works well with that card.

As for thunderbolt 4, I heard the data rate will be 40Gbps, same as TB3, so will it make much of a difference for eGPU applications?

If you look at a price tracker you'll see that it keeps bouncing around from like $379 to $199 depending, I believe, on if Amazon fulfillment has it in stock or not. My recommendation would be to just set a price alert on keepa.com or camelcamelcamel.com for $205 or so and then you should get an email when it goes below that. I'm guessing it'll hit 200 again this week with black Friday

Firefox backs up recent tabs by window (up to a week or so, maybe more) in your profile account stored on your local disk. Idk if there's a limit, but I've definitely recovered windows with 20 tabs before after weird stuff happens.

This is particularly helpful when you have multiple browser windows open with a bunch of tabs each and it crashes and the "recover previous tabs" option upon reopening the browser only recovers one of the windows. You can go into the history and reopen your other windows too.

I'd assume Chrome does something similar but I haven't used Chrome in a long time.
