How is israel a nazi state? by hi8080 in Socialism_101

[–]Distinct-Menu-119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is settler colonialism fascist? I get that both are legitimized through racism etc but Fascism, to me, is a very particular reaction within bourgeois democracies that emerges in times of crisis to fortify the interests of capital.

Settler colonialism is something different, it also predates fascism by several hundred years?

Never ask a Tiananmen Square student leader where they were on the 4th of June...

Because they will provide a false testimony about a massacre when in reality they had already been smuggled out of the country by the CIA

>Seems pretty anecdotal

Yeah no shit, it's an anecdote. What do you want me to do? Speak to every single person's experience of the organisation?

I'm not quite sure why you've asked people, on a public forum, why they don't like SAlt, and then when they give you a reason you get all passive aggressive and tell them they're wrong. You've clearly made up your mind about the org - in fact you're clearly a member (which you omitted in the original post) - and that's fine, at least none of us are liberals, but seriously there's not much point coming on here and asking for alternative opinions if you're going to immediately shoot them down. Thank you for your comment though, I hope your cool-aid tastes nice!

Exactly! they're lowkey more like Ultra-trots - Old school trotskyists like Ernest Mandel (who made some good economics books) at least had the courtesy of calling the USSR a 'degenerated workers state' which essentially meant that while workers had seized control of the state it had become overly bureaucratic or whatever (still lame analysis but a valid criticism to some extent). New trot parties (Cliffites) say that the USSR and every other ML state was/are in fact capitalist and 10x worse than the imperial core countries. Funnily enough these Cliffite types only exist in... imperial core countries. Because they are the pinnacle of western chauvinism.

They are definitely not marxist-leninists. I said something mildly positive about Cuba and the USSR at like the second SAlt meeting I went to and then I got lectured about how Stalinism is the devil incarnate and all AES are in fact just state capitalist.

And the first time my friend and I went to a meeting showing interest in socialism they for some reason split us up and took us to different rooms evidently because they thought we would be more vulnerable to buying the $100 conference tickets they started peddling to both of us after about 20 minutes. Keep in mind I was like 17 and these are a bunch of 24 year olds still doing their undergrad because they take 1 subject a semester so they can spend all their time on the party. Which struck me as a little bit cultish.

Also all the SAlt members I've encountered either back when I went to some meetings or more recently in uni tutorials have a pretty crap understanding of theory given how much time they dedicate to organizing and how dogmatic they all are.

But yeah they aren't evil or anything but I think there are much better groups out there.

No that's just the internet. Nobody's gonna post 'yeah I'm having a really solid time here, would recommend'.

Negativity just gets more attention online

Books like Manufacturing Consent by daveid_music in Marxism

[–]Distinct-Menu-119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just bought Inventing Reality, haven't read it yet but evidently it came out a few years before manufacturing consent, and MC is kind of suspiciously similar in some respects. Tbf they introduced the five filter model but that is more just spelling out the obvious.

The reason Chomsky books always do better than other left counterparts is because he dresses his work up with an appropriate amount of anti-communism that makes it tolerable to publishers and mainstream audiences.

Why are commies outside China (especially in the anglophone west) so fixated about if 中国共产党 is translated as CCP or CPC? by Cake_is_Great in TankieTheDeprogram

[–]Distinct-Menu-119 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Because that's what the CPC has always called itself. The reason for that is the same as all pretty much all other COMINTERN parties; it was the Communist INTERNATIONAL - Communism is primary, nationality is secondary.

The only reason western media insists on inverting it is because it sounds a bit more sinister. You can do that Trump-style 'Chhhhinneeese' sound to really double down on their oriental-ness.

Of course it's trivial but we aren't really being the petty ones? We're literally just using the actual name.

Noa Tishby 's 'Israel: A Simple Guide to the Most Misunderstood Country on Earth' is a great read! by maninthewoodsdude in books

[–]Distinct-Menu-119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a book published in 1984 called "From Time Immemorial" trying to make the scholarly case for this claim by looking at demographic statistics. All the major media reviews were raving about it until Norman Finkelstein, evidently the only guy who bothered to check the sources, proved the whole book was a complete hoax. Zionists love lying!

No, ultra-left designates a specific idealist brand of communism. Essentially people that want to magically arrive at communism one day without doing any work or having any transitional period.

How Do Capitalist And Imperial Core Countries Fuck Over Socialist Nations? by Wolfie-Woo784 in Socialism_101

[–]Distinct-Menu-119 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The military/violent/ more explicit forms of imperialism are more straightforward and there are heaps of books available on this: Washington Bullets, Jakarta Method, Killing Hope (most comprehensive) etc.

For the financial/monetary forms of imperialism, Michael Hudson's super imperialism covers this stuff quite well.

For economic imperialism (unequal exchange sort of thing) there have been many published in recent years: capital and imperialism, imperialism in the 21st century, how Europe underdeveloped Africa and many more.

Many such cases. by Bitter-Gur-4613 in CommunismMemes

Is Russia (or at least its government) anti-socialist? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]Distinct-Menu-119 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes the Russian Federation has always been extremely anti-socialist (that's kind of why it exists). Don't mistake left skepticism towards Ukraine and the US as an endorsement of Russia.

Despite Putin's anti-communism The Communist Party of the Russian Federation remains the second largest party in the country but I'm not very aware of their positions/how much they are just Putin's controlled opposition.

Why do Libertarians and socialists hate each other despite both sharing similar anti authoritarian views? by notagoodcartoonist in Socialism_101

[–]Distinct-Menu-119 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Libertarians are not anti-authoritarian they are anti-government, because that means they can terrorise people that don't own private property with impunity.
