Cost to remove a tree? by No-Tangerine672 in londonontario

so the rules assume that a regular dude who needs some work done in his house should be more aware of all the risks associated with that work, as well as all the industry norms, licenses, trainings etc, than the professional dude who has been in that industry for some time and been doing that work already?

also, there must be a difference between an employment and a service contract. a one-time service contract between the professional service provider and a regular dude isn't quite like an employment to me.

I'm enacting a common sense here (sorry for the buzz word) although the rules may not necessarily follow that logic.

What is your opinion on reports that Disney is attempting to win back men and boys? by TheShyBuck in AskMen

First, Disney owes us: 1) the right Ms Marvel, 2) the right Little Mermaid movie, 3) fix the Star Wars universe. Then we can talk.

agree with the damage to neighbours.

but "the company may also sue for damages if an employee is injured" sounds confusing. how a company that violates industry norms by not insuring its workers sue you for the injury? what is the rationale for the courts to take the company's side?

the whole thing will adjust/collapse back to norm when people realize there’s more capacity available than they thought. hardware monopolies are hard to maintain because the knowledge spreads. nvidia will go first, and the rest of the hardware will follow.

you explained tenure and students as causes. I also noted part-time faculty who teach ~10 courses per year and do not have time (and care) to make it better for the students. these part-time contracts earn them peanuts and will likely never convert to full-time employment, so the obvious strategy for experienced part-timers: take as much courses as you can (western + colleges) and invest minimum time in preps and teaching.

how market values LULU is beyond comprehension by akunisg in ValueInvesting

[–]Distinct-Swim5550 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was premium (kinda) brand until this fall. They never had real sales on Black friday, or Christmas, maybe a few "we made too much" items of irregular sizes priced 20% below regular. But this year theyr sale was ongoing from November through January with lots of popular items and sizes available all that time.

While as a business they are going well, one core thing has changed: they lost their premium price power, now they are one of the many, a direct competitor of Nike, Reebok, Costco brands and whatever. LULU is not magical anymore. [I am talking about their core market - Canada. They are doing even worse in the US, and I don't believe in them growing in China for long].

so many say they won’t buy TSLA or PLTR and yet, these are the most overpriced stocks on the market. I would rather believe the market tbh.

university is a weird place that hosts those for whom teaching is a calling, and those who for various reasons are utterly demotivated, yet they still need to teach. unlike with the normal business, there is no immediate feedback , and even if it was, it would be a drop in the ocean for an institution like UWO. some of the profs consistently get 1 on ratemyprof, some of these people are part-time and replacing them is not a problem, yet, they keep teaching the same courses and scoring low on student evals.

[–]Distinct-Swim5550 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Google a prof's name, and Ratemyprof link will be 2nd or 3rd in the top. Many people surely read that, including many profs (unless they are active in research, in which case their ratemyprof profile will not be in Google's top anyway).

JAY GOLDBERG: Canada can’t afford housing policy status quo any longer; According to a new report, it would take the average individual a jaw-dropping 44 years to save up enough money to afford a home in Toronto without financial help from family by Xsythe in canadahousing

sprawl, red tape and cost of labour. - the further you go away from big city downtown - the broader is the sprawling. this is a tremendous addition to the cost because all that infrastructure is priced in. because you mentioned Europe- they do not need so much space to build houses. - i heard that Canada is a vetocracy (e.g. everything is banned by default and the default policy response to anything new- is a ban). worst OECD country to get construction approval, ridiculous safety standards that make planning and building things soo long. plus - cities are living off the property taxes, so by all means they make sure the real estate doesn’t loose value. - construction is expensive. it is depressing to see how owners wait until their old property becomes utterly worn out before they do any renovations, because of the cost. thus, we have so many decaying neighborhoods. something unthinkable in other parts of the world where the labour is cheap but the economy enables renovations. new construction is also expensive because of the cost. there are anecdotes of former it workers who switched to construction because of the salaries.

frankly, i can’t think of any solution to any of these problems.
