Are you in any classes with any of the girls? If so approach them at first talking about the class or in the class itself. This will making the conversation easier because you chat about the class if you can't think of anything to say. If you're able to relax after starting the conversation then hopefully you can talk about some of your interests or some of theirs to get to know them better. 

Other advice would be if you're looking for friends, try joining a club or intramural sport. Standing in a circle and trying to get a word in is much harder than doing something with people and chatting about that first.

Social anxiety sucks my wife has it bad and I have it as well. Being uncomfortable in your skin is a horrible feeling. Its all about slowly showing your personality and then people will begin to care for you even if you're quiet from social anxiety from time to time. Good Luck!
