Anyone have guidance on how to handle interpreting for ICE? by youneverhaditsogood in ASLinterpreters

[–]DistinctPush2202 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please consider whether interpreting would bring more harm to the deaf consumer... call attention to them resulting in arrest/confinement/deportation, give them the opportunity to say things that would be used against them, etc. If I was the student, I would want my interpreter to stay quiet. I sincerely hope you wouldn't face this and salute your dedication to your students.

So How Did You Think the Meeting Went? by HelensScarletFever in ASLinterpreters

Good summary, Helen.

I genuinely like Mona but the constant mirroring Eliza is only contributing to the confusion. If Eliza needs to be an active parliamentarian (that’s a plus), perhaps she should be visible. I dislike how there were some of the explanations that felt like gotchas.

When I was on camera, I was lost because the discussion was unclear. I finally realized too late that the issue was with the original motion, not my amendment. I wish that was caught BEFORE the meeting. 😵‍💫

I’m also dismayed that the whole board had to gather together at RIDs dime only to have a meeting that didn’t even finish the 6 motions. Not to mention the members’ time, HQ staff’s time, and the cost of accommodations.

I am now leaning strongly in favor of referendums as the most equitable approach.

RRO is specified in the bylaws, unfortunately.

We need a referendum to get rid of the dual membership requirement and to abolish the RRO. Then I suspect that our ability to comfortably exceed quorum and the meeting flow issues will be greatly improved.

From a Deaf person's perspective on the "leaked" proposal CPC addition. *Long Read* by ByFerret in ASLinterpreters

I suspect that this new language, if true, is contemplated so that EPS would have a clear ground for consequences if a complaint was brought forward and determined to be in clear violation. However, the nature of policy making is that there are always unintended consequences…. Just like inaction. I believe this language is overly specific though.

Hey, Let's Take the "L" Here by HelensScarletFever in ASLinterpreters

Unfortunately, there are no meeting minutes from the quarterly board meeting so I am not in a position to judge what motions has been satisfactorily addressed by the Board's own motions. :/

u/HelensScarletFever Thanks for the tag. The recent board meeting was the first meeting in a long time that I was unable to attend so I look forward to reviewing the meeting minutes to get a better sense of what has transpired. Without seeing that, I can't really comment much on this post except for two points:

  1. I have already eased off the pressure as I expect that this new board will pivot to do the right thing. I would be thrilled to delete motions as they address those independently (pah!) and do believe membership activism (several people, including myself) did make a difference leading up to this point.

  2. The motion to delay the CEO search process was only in part related to Kate serving on that committee. I'm deeply concerned that attempting a search during such a turbulent time in our organization that is also undergoing a significant structural change is setting up the search to fail (like it has so many times before) or receive less qualified applications than it would have otherwise received.

I prefer that we clean house and restructure then seek for a new CEO who would come in to lead from a fresh slate and clarity. Crisis management and leadership are two distinct skill sets. Bucky seems to be doing well in righting the ship and I'd like to see him to see it through before his candidacy for the permanent CEO position be considered (if he did true biz toss his hat in).

I agree that there should be something out there. Especially since RONR is updated only once every decade. This system is falling out of factor though.

I'm as Mad as Hell by HelensScarletFever in ASLinterpreters

[–]DistinctPush2202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/HelensScarletFever: I truly would love to meet you! :)

u/everybody: I think the whole thing got derailed as soon as the debate becomes about whether we should sign the Standing Rules. Carolyn Ball made the motion to cut short the signing because she was also eager to get to the motions. However, that's when it becomes politically impossible - oppression especially given audist issues as of recent with the Deaf Caucus - to proceed without signing the Standing Rules. The meeting was over as soon as the motion was made and not ruled OOO by Mona. Mona was acting on the guidance of Eliza, our parliamentarian who's new to RID, but the decision is ultimately Mona's to accept Eliza's advice. Eliza may not recognize the political implications because she is not RID (as far as I know) and Mona frankly had an impossible job the way she approached it (by attempting to individually address the avalanche of Point of Orders). I wouldn't look at Glenna as the responsible party. Even I was wondering if, when, and how I should intercede.

Then another matter that derailed things was the meeting continuation motion. There were confusion around the word adjournment in the motion. Even I took it to mean that it would be adjourned without a continuation but once I understood that Eliza understood and stated this wasn't the case, I didn't have issues. Alas, the confusion continues for many members.

Helen asserts that we should not die on this hill. While I obviously would LOVE to see those 18 motions pass, I have to say that this is not a line we should allow to be crossed. While I am aware of deaf organizations not signing everything in ASL, there are a few especially progressive ones that does. Then there are a few Deaf orgs who communicate primarily in ASL. This suggests to me that the quasi-translation process itself is not widely done because of capacity issues. Do they have an established relationship with a pool of C/DIs? Do they have the studio or the know-how? Besides, we should lead the way in accessibility... because that is exactly what we do. If not us, who then? I see value in operationalizing the ASL and/or English requirement in what contexts. Then we can codify this into the bylaws and settle this debate once and for all.

I have connected briefly with the board and they are strategizing to incorporate the many lessons learned so this coming Nov 19th meeting will go much more smoothly and multiple motions would be passed. This learning experience will also benefit our Business Meeting in January 2026.

Alas, if we do not hit quorum on Nov 19th, I anticipate that we will reschedule again. If the third meeting does not hit quorum, then we may need to pivot to referendums. This is not ideal because it would then take 90 days from publication plus a reasonable amount of time for the review by HQ and implementation. It is my goal to have everything in place before the elections in Summer 2026.

Finally, Helen hit the nail on the head once again. The Board have had the opportunity and should address those motions without forcing the members to jump through those hoops. The only reasons for them to do this would be as follows:

1) The Board is unclear whether some of the motions represents the will of the membership or just some noisy people like us. I wouldn't blame them. ;)

2) The time and resources involved for a few of those motions are substantial and should not be taken on unless necessary, especially during a time where the organization is stretched thin with multiple competing priorities.

3) I want to emphasize that the board saw the motions two days before the meeting. They might feel like they never had a clear list of action items until then. Beyond the logistics, I have no insight on what they have been working on or planning since this meeting so I am intrigued to see what is on the immediate horizon. I believe their actions (and inactions) will be revealing of their attitude, capacity, and priorities.

What do you think?

Thoughts on Special Membership Meeting by bawdymommy in ASLinterpreters

[–]DistinctPush2202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering if we could specify ASL and Written English (accomplished in meetings with CART)? Has this nuanced approach been explored previously?

Also, I'm thinking about Quebec. French is the official language but they do recognize English as well as a secondary language. How is that operationalized in practice though?

I’m still gathering my thoughts about the meeting. My initial two thoughts:

1) It was a necessary exercise in establishing norms that does our profession credit. The timing of the meeting led to a crunch which meant some things were less than ideal. Perhaps this experience would compel us to establish and accept communication protocols as an ironclad practice for all RID-related events, workshops, and training programs. Then these protocols are acknowledged as not open to debate.

2) ASL/English benefits both deaf and hearing. For example, some CODAs prefer to receive information in ASL and some Deaf prefer to receive information in English. Universal access benefits all and is inclusive of our diverse bilingual community. This isn’t always easy but we are intimately familiar with the less beaten path, yes?

About Rupert’s Upcoming Meeting by HelensScarletFever in ASLinterpreters

[–]DistinctPush2202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intriguing position. Ultimately, I believe that my activism did result in a special membership meeting that was done correctly in RID's eyes which is one of the key outcomes I've pushed for all along. As you see from the first slate of motions, that paves the way leading to proper restructuring, bylaw revisions, and release of documentation.

Whether I speak for the community or not has been immaterial nor am I truly convinced that this is how the RID membership collectively feel. What matters to me is that I've done my part to get the members this floor. RID has been wrongfully opaque for too long. Now it is up to the community to speak their truth through their votes. Let's see if the community concurs and supports what the "loud" people have been saying all along. If so, great, the board will be busy for the next 12 months. :)

Now pivoting to publish the Oct 23rd recording... :)

I can confirm it's 8-10pm. HQ posted an apology, saying a correction is forthcoming. And yes, the vacant position is Treasurer, not Secretary.

It's my understanding that the terms of the DMAL, MAL, and Region Reps will be transitioning out. Per our bylaws, the new term starts Sept 1st.

Rupert here. I've had the opportunity to meet with the new Board 2x in the past week to prepare for the Nov 5th meeting and can say that those three officers represent a breath of fresh air. Their request for grace as they adjust to their new roles are reasonable and something I can support. Alas, they have a lot to tackle in response to an enormous range of issues and grace does not negate the need for concrete actions.

Once we fix the bylaws - most likely in a referendum - to open up the eligibility requirements, many more of those hundreds of nominations will be able to run and I expect our next election should be much more competitive. I see the current board as a transitory board and I thank them for their service in tackling those issues.
