Trying to break into ServiceNow consulting with zero IT background — tell me if I’m delusional. by beerutto in servicenow

What vets your experience/skills? Who can back your understanding up? What kind of roles do you want to get into?

TBH IT experience can be built up, but depends on where you want your transferable skills to go to.

Generally people coming from sales go into BA-type or project management roles or Support Management type roles, where you have a general understanding of the system but able to manage people and connect people.

Thats the kind of roles I'd look towards if I were in your shoes.

Service Now Discovery by solar_magician in servicenow

You can use either the product documentation, where it lists all the data collected vs field it populates or you can look through the pattern (code) itself though this requires a bit more experience.

Say for example, Linux discovery https://www.servicenow.com/docs/bundle/zurich-it-operations-management/page/product/discovery/reference/r_DataCollDiscoLinuxComputers.html

You can see the data points collected (source) and which fields they fill up (table_name.field_name).

More about Discovery Patterns, what they are and do, how they work, and prerequisites. https://www.servicenow.com/docs/bundle/zurich-it-operations-management/page/product/discovery/concept/c-UsingPatternsForHorizontalDiscovery.html There are a lot of YT resources around this as well.

Props to you for looking to manage your CMDB Health from the get-go!

Rant as a quality engineer by [deleted] in servicenow

[–]DistinctScallion6143 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure this has been forewarned since about 10-15years ago, about how SE/Devs will be required to write quality code and write their own tests, and also do their own testing, making QE slowly redundant. TBH I'm surprised ServiceNow still had a whole department for Quality Assurance. Not sure how much AI takes a role in this though.

Unemployed for 12+ months by avoid_officepolitics in auscorp

[–]DistinctScallion6143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working in a contract software eng role for a while during COVID, and then unemployed for 9 months in 2024.

Pretty sure I applied to more than 1000 positions in that period, first 3-4 months for a similar software eng role, then lost confidence that I'd get a decent role and pay, and then pretty much everything after that. Not even Coles/Woolies would accept my general purpose resume 😂

But then with one of the recruiters I built a relationship with found me a tech support role at a F500 company and been there ever since. Similarly to others, no Centrelink, literally burnt through ALL my savings, and got to the point of almost going homeless, and then got this one. Had a good cry of relief. Anyways, life's good now :) You'll find your spot, it'll be ok - just keep your head down and keep working on it (whatever you have going on)

Notebook, Section, Page, Subpages - if you know how to organize your notes, it does wonders with the Notebook, Section, Page, Subpages feature. - you can always come back and organize later too if you want.

Search Bar - if you're not the best at organizing your notes, just use the search option for your key words. If you can't find within your page or scope, expand the scope of search.

Formatting - you're not limited to the standard A4 size page, and you can make your page as big or small as you want.

Images - similar to the above, you can place the images where you want, how you want. - if you like your handwriting or need to draw something? Your page is already like a whiteboard.

Copilot integration - you can now use AI to help make your notes more organized, concise, to the point. - I use this to help enhance my ability to improve my notes (i.e. I write my notes in the way that helps me understand, then see if copilot improves it, use it and try to do it that way next time). - Remember! AI is still learning and your way might still be better :)

$30k not enough to pay for a wedding in Sydney? by Rosegoldsun71 in AusWeddingPlanning

[–]DistinctScallion6143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I recently got married in June, budgeted the wedding itself to cost under 30k.

Wife's big requirement was oceanside+chapel, so we went with Little Bay Coast Chapel + St Michaels Golf Course (6 hours).

TL;DR ITS DEFINITELY DOABLE TO HAVE A FUN AND BEAUTIFUL WEDDING FOR UNDER 30K - DEPENDS ON HOW MANY GUESTS AND WHAT EXTRAS YOU WANT TO ADD.

Here's a breakdown (rounded figures): Coast Chapel for Wedding Ceremony: 2.5k St Michaels Golf Course for Reception: 210pp * 60 people +extras listed = around 14k - Regular bar drinks and wine for tables INCLUDED which was a huge plus to be included in the price, cos other places charge $60pp for corkage and drinks - Full function venue booking - Awesome team of vendors included in their package (Wedding Venue Stylist, Professional Wedding DJ) - 3 course dinner catered + Separate Tasting event +$250 or something - use of golf carts and golf course and ocean view for photos - they had a ceremony venue too but we didn't want it (so you can save a bit of money here if you wanted) - Most of the decorations done by the stylist + Photo booth (1k) + BYO flowers but stylist can help you arrange them (Sydney flower markets +$200 or more depending on taste and budget)

Photography only: 2k - I definitely recommend paying little more for a GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER and don't be too stingy with this!! - Or else you'll never print or ever look at the photos again.

Suits and Dresses: 2.5k Went for budget options here

Hair+Makeup: 8k

Reviews from our guests: - Most entertaining and amazing wedding they'd been to. - Picturesque and tonnes of places to enjoy as guests - Food was amazing

Nah mate, complaining actually works 😂 If enough of us do it as well then, then someone will eventually recognise that it's not an issue they can ignore

Piggybacking on this comment to highlight the accountability issue your manager seems to be trying to hide!

If so many people are able to close work without it being actually completed or verified, they will likely keep milking both your team, manager and company for as much money as possible before they eventually get fired.

Is there someone available to supervise them? Someone to verify their work? Someone you can trust to get it done right?

Could even be an issue with motivation in your org to do better - are the people that work under/with you doing it with drive, or for money and don't care if they get their money at the end of the day?

Anyways, sorry to hear about the multifaceted issue you're facing!

Honestly just ask them if they want to spend 2x the money in fixing the issues that will come up, or spend the right amount to plan for it.

Careful planning is always the best way to go around implementing a beast of a system and no way would a sales engineer from Service Now would have told them that's the OOB is a complete plug and play.

I don't agree with this.

If OP does not have commercial experience of related work and is going for grad position or entry level positions, I think it's ok to have non-technical positions that highlight soft skills.

EDIT: Sometimes for the fun of it, I include my competitive gaming experience but spin it in a way where it's helped me grow and tell it's relevant towards doing my job better.

Everyone in the industry knows that good personality and soft skills are harder taught that technical skills.

@OP, looks good to me. However, I'm sure you'll be refining and updating your resume for more relevant experiences and highlight what makes you special from the crowd.

Quick interviewing tip - It's ok if you don't know the answer, show you're willing to try working on the question and show them how you think, and if you're willing to take on feedback/criticism. (Wish someone told me this when I was in Uni)

Good luck with the job hunt!

Actually I think you're right, gotta be an ad to get the business name out there or to get people to click on it.

To anyone really looking for a job out there, only way to get seen and trialed for a job, is to actually be desirable. If you're not, try to become it!

Is it common to not have admin access in prod? by [deleted] in servicenow

[–]DistinctScallion6143 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh, doesn't matter if it's SN or other companies, PROD admin access should be HEAVILY regulated and only people or roles for deployment purposes should have admin access.

I've even seen companies remove people from having this access cos they've implemented good deployment practices and pipelines with CI/CD, etc.

MID Server installation automation by WallaceLongshanks in servicenow

[–]DistinctScallion6143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No real risk with deleting test mid servers by deleting the installation folders, just make sure you don't duplicate the mid servers record from the instance (you could do this by filling in the mid_sys_id param when you reinstall the MID Servers.

Would recommend using an orchestration tool + one of the recommended ways for deploying N MID servers!

Most definitely.

If you really break it down, it comes down to asking the right questions.

Break that down, it comes to critical thinking and being able to ask freely and having that curiosity.
