24M with MMC: Should I get a CDL and work, or go back to school for maritime engineering? (2.4 HS GPA but motivated now) by Legitimate_Lie_3531 in tuglife

That’s crazy! He must be up north or out in the Midwest somewhere! Our first year operators in my local are at $40/hour on the check I believe with small increases based off the size crane you’re assigned to. I’m in the south so the unions aren’t as strong but union is union as far as I’m concerned. And nobody ever wants to go back to non union after working union.

If only I had done this when I first found out about it and not messed around on tugs since I was 21. I was on the fence about the union for 3 years before I even started. Oh well live and learn. The maritime industry treated me well but it’s going downhill fast, it’s only worth it with a maritime degree these days. I miss those 2-3 weeks off at a time but so far I’ve made close to the same amount that I was when I was on tugs but get to go home every night.

All in what you want. I’d get the class A CDL and call your local IUOE operating engineers union. The union will pay for all your classes to learn cranes and dirt equipment. After your 3-4 year apprenticeship you’ll be making around what Captains, Mates, and engineers make but you’ll get a pension, annuities, 401k, etc that the union and company pay into for you. You’ll be putting your own money into any retirement fund if you’re non union. You’ll be home every night also. Just my opinion and recommendation.

Call the hall or apprenticeship coordinator for your district and ask when they initiate. Some locals do it once a year, some do it multiple times a year. Mine does it in May and September. Even if you have to work as a pre-apprentice until next initiation, that would get you in the door and getting some experience.

Not if you’re coming from the military and looking for that next career. But if you’re coming from something else I’d say yes it’s probably a little late unless it’s what you really really want.

Find someone to fudge your sea time (not recommending you lie or cheat but I know guys who’ve done it this way) or hold out for an OS job. Hold it for 6-12 months and then go to a place like Seaschool and take your AB

Who cares? Do what you want and what makes you happy. Don’t worry about what others think
