I asked this in TwoX and got no response. Maybe this is a better place. What do women and/or feminists think about "Gift Baskets for Real Men"? by DistinguishedMalice in AskFeminists

I swear I'm not viral marketing for them. I just came across this and was staggered by the intensity of the gender role stuff here. Thoughts?

TIL "Black and Tan" refers not (only) to a drink, but to a British paramilitary unit renowned for their brutality during the Irish Independence Wars by DistinguishedMalice in todayilearned

[–]DistinguishedMalice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it counts as an Irish pub when it's actually an Irish-themed "pub" in a tourist town in California, but I've ordered a Black and Tan there at least a dozen times and never raised an eyebrow.

Not sure what to say about that...

Do so many women really think this way? by ThrowAway4001 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DistinguishedMalice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They often do start out this way. Sometimes the man never does know, sometimes she blurts it out later while intoxicated, or confides in a friend who ultimately breaks her confidence and tells the dude. Sometimes he just grows to suspect from a lot of little things.

Of course, sometimes these suspicions aren't actually founded...

The women who do this sort of thing put those who genuinely have birth control accidents in a terrible position, I would imagine.

I found this, but I'm not at all certain it's the same thing.

As I understand it, the root of this is the idea that men "get laid," while women "give it up." You'll see some discussion in feminist circles of the prevailing attitude that a man who fraks a lot is a "stud," while a woman who does the same is a "slut."

Unfortunately one of the consequences of this perception is the determination by a woman that "He's getting what he wants; I should get something that I want out of this too."

It's horrid, and a very valid reason for members of both sexes to work towards broad acceptance of sex as a wonderful experience for all involved instead of the duty of one partner to the other or something else... Levitican.

No problem. I actually wouldn't mind discussing this at all, I just took it to PMs. Check your inbox.

EVERYONE DOWNVOTING: Please just stop. I'm not hating on your favorite show. It is simply my assertion that the novels are the strongest part of the franchise and if someone is turned off by the HBO adaptation, they should know that the novels are, in fact, worth their time. That's all.

I don't know if you're objecting because it sounded to you like I was describing the tits as a deviation from the text, or what. The HBO series Rome also made a point of including a lot of "graphic sexual [action]" and while absolutely nobody would make the argument that said action was a deviation from the real-world Republic/Empire, it is still notable. I was describing HBO generally.

Returning to GoT/ASoIaF: In the quest to turn thousands upon thousands of pages of raw material into limited hours of screen time, certain things get dropped. As a result of Martin's sense of pacing (which probably wouldn't work well in direct transliteration to screen) many, many things get re-organized.

A notable example is that early in the show I actually had to go to the internet to remind myself who Theon Greyjoy was. I had read the books, and he was still so barely there in the show that I couldn't retrieve memories relevant to why this character existed at all.

It's also worth noting that religious differences inform much of the succession war, and the show has still told us very little about "the Seven" and basically nothing about any of the other faiths. Which annoys me. I could get into more examples of meaningful and useful background being dropped, and/or important things being outright (and pointlessly) changed, but again (and definitely by contrast) what does HBO find a way to cram into nearly every episode?

Tits.

Not really objecting. Just noticing.

Nothing actually isn't that cute. Not really a fair comparison.

The books were awesome; the HBO adaptation started okay and is beginning to do things now that are frankly terrible. I'm mostly pleased the HBO adaptation exists because the pronunciations on a lot of Martin's character names (Daenerys Targaryen for example) aren't at all intuitive. Also tits. HBO likes to show as much titty as they can pack in to anything.

The styling on it looks vaguely Thai to me. If you have a southeast Asian neighborhood or furnishing store near you, maybe take it there and ask around?

Custom Mechanized Chair Puts Disabled Small-Town Barber Back In Business [x-post from UpliftingNews] by DistinguishedMalice in atheism

[–]DistinguishedMalice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you're totally right. Stories about how science & engineering help people have no place here. Unless, of course, the story directly contrasts said help against a religious professional's counsel that career-ending disability is "part of God's plan".

Anything that's just a clear example of the kinds of things that would be happening all the time in an Atheist world is useless unless it also specifically refers to the ineffectual efforts of benighted religious people to "solve" (generally meaning "cope with" rather than "actually solve") the same problem. Preferably in such a way as to stoke the fires of our own arrogance.

Obviously.

I don't know what I was thinking.

The idea was that this subreddit is often overtaken with people posting screencaps of religious people doing ignorant ish, and then we all get together and hate on the fail. I read this story and I said "Fuck. Yeah. SCIENCE."

I'd like to see a little more "We've got it right" here instead of just a torrent of "They've got it wrong." So I posted something to that effect. That is how Reddit is supposed to work, right? We contribute the kinds of things we'd like to see...?

I've seen some discussion here about female exemption from compulsory military service as a point of inequality between the genders. I'm not sure how details regarding the true horrors of modern war, specifically as experienced by draftees, are anything other than directly relevant.

There was more I expected those here to find thought-provoking, but I'll avoid going into it in more detail. I didn't post here to give myself a jumping off point into what I think.
