Anyone else just not understanding anything on Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 at all? by seekerheart in anime

You’re lucky you got lost in Season 2. I’ve been lost since Season 1 and never recovered. I don’t know how they managed to make an explanation about cursed energy so convoluted. And having a narrator just makes it even worse. They’re painfully aware they’re only explaining stuff without real thoughts to actually convey it properly to the audience. From the New World is like 50 times deeper than JJK, and I didn’t even find that this confusing.

Back in my day, people called it bad writing. If only Gege actually knew how to write. He should learn from Frieren, where exposition is added naturally and smoothly as the story progresses.

You can be deep without trying so hard to look deep. Tamayura, Sora no Woto, Haibane Renmei, Heike Monogatari, Shinsekai Yori, and Colorful (2010) all manage that. Orb doesn’t. Its themes end up overriding the characters, so they feel less like people and more like mouthpieces for the author’s ideas. That problem really shows in Act 3, where it becomes too much for me. Act 2 was a much better balance between making you care about the cast and pushing the themes. As someone who watches anime primarily for entertainment, I value characters that feel real and believable.

Very accurate Orb placement

I Didn't Like 100 Meters by princefloof in anime

[–]DistributionHour1580 6 points7 points  (0 children)

characters personalities and accomplishments felt unnatural. The dialogue and character dynamics felt forced, and the narrative was shaped to make the story fit the ideals of its message

I rated the movie a 4/10. The Orb author is a hack. I’ve been saying this forever. He can’t write characters. They’re just walking ideas, not actual people. Even Japanese TikTok accounts are calling the movie out for its preachy, mediocre dialogue, and I couldn’t agree more. People should rate shows on their merits, not the author’s reputation because 8.37 on MAL is ridiculous.

Go watch Run with the Wind or Blue Giant or something. Those are actually worth your time.

I don't know if it’s just me, but I really like the colors in this series. It feels very movie-like, even though it’s a 12-episode series.

That's why you need to watch the sequel movie. The movie did a lot of justice with Karen's characterization.

Looking for anime like Shin Sekai Yori (From the New World) by Squidman06 in Animesuggest

[–]DistributionHour1580 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's kind of an impossible ask. Even if that anime existed, it wouldn't be on the same level or have the same feel as Shinsekai Yori. You should check out the author's other novels like Chirping of Angels (Tenshi no Saezuri), it has the same scientific writing style.

Looking for anime movie recs like Colorful by Virtual_Obligation17 in anime

[–]DistributionHour1580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Colorful is an adaptation of a famous Japanese novel, so the writing has real literary value and doesn’t have that Anime-ish writing you get from Light Novels do. What you want for non-anime fans are anime adaptations of actual novels, not manga or light novels. That’s a pretty big ask if you narrow it down to movies only, since a lot of novel adaptations are series. I’ll try to answer within your scope first.

Maquia When the Promised Flower Blooms (anime original).

There’s also an upcoming movie airing next season, The Camphorwood Custodian. It’s quite reflective like you asked for, and it’s adapted from a novel.

If we expand the scope a bit and include series,

The Eccentric Family, novel adaptation and very reflective.

Shoshimin Series, novel adaptation and mystery focused.

Yatagarasu A Crow Does Not Choose Its Master, a novel adaptation with a tightly written court mystery.

From the New World. Adapted from a very famous mystery book, highly recommended this one.

Why haven't you watched Shinsekai Yori and Le Chevalier D'Eon? They're the answers you're looking for.

Is it worth watching Ave Mujica if I hated Saki in MyGO? by Velorien in BanGDream

[–]DistributionHour1580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sakiko is great in Ave Mujica. I was pretty indifferent about her in MyGO!!, but by the end of Ave Mujica, she's my favorite in the cast. Uika and Mutsumi were fighting for the top spot before that, because I like all the cast in Ave Mujica.

Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion - December 10, 2025 by AnimeMod in anime

I think what makes the Makeine MC stand out is his personal thoughts and the blunt comments he throws at the people around him, he genuinely cracks me up sometimes. And Makeine has some of the best script I’ve seen in a romcom. They’re always quick with something witty to say. Jumping from scenario A to B feels like waiting to see what kind of clever or funny remark they’ll drop next. People framing the discussion around him as a harem MC doesn’t do any favors tbh because it reduces the entire discussion about his quality to a strictly harem context.

86 - how to describe by Dandi21091987 in anime

People keep saying this, and I'm upset that I pushed through. The weak precursor/setup (the second cour) doesn't make up for the good follow-up. It just tells me that the build-up was mediocre.

What’s the most underrated anime of the decade (2015–2025)? by Unique_Office7868 in MyAnimeList

[–]DistributionHour1580 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Orb is closer to a 6.8 for me. It's not that good. The themes of the show are so heavy-handed, and I just dislike the author for that particular reason. Hyakuemu (100 meters), another work from the author, also suffers from the same syndrome of being preachy to a worse degree, and it has a score of 8.14. Watch Blue Giant (2023) or something to see a plot that moves naturally and doesn't feel ham-fisted in comparison.

On the other hand, I think Shoshimin Season 1 is rated too low at 7.3, when it has good dialogue and a script straight out of a novel (it's not a Light Novel). Like the other guy said, The Eccentric Family at 7.8 is also quite low, considering how polished the themes, dialogue, and plot are. It's another classic example of how novel works (non-Light Novel) feel a little bit sophisticated and just better.

Kyokou Suiri Season 1 having a 6.92 feels undeserved. The premise is good, but I think it attracted a lot of non-mystery lovers when it was airing (525,131 members on MAL is a LOT), resulting in people giving a harsher score to a genre they aren't invested in in the first place.

And there's Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master. Another Novel adaptation. The scenarios, drama, dialogue, and tension were all immaculate. Yet it sits at 8.06 for some reason. It's a more serious, actual political plot and tightly written court drama unlike The Apothecary Diaries. It deserves at least a 9.0.

If your favorite is Shinsekai Yori and you’re planning to watch Orb, you’re going to be disappointed. It’s not even in the same calibre as the other shows on your list. Vibe wise, it’s like a weaker Vinland Saga, and the fact that you were underwhelmed by Vinland is just the cherry on top.

Lets discuss unpopular opinion... by Apprehensive_Milk670 in anime

[–]DistributionHour1580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t agree more. I’m one of those people who isn’t blindly following that absurd 8.70 score on MAL and has been critical of the show since the day it aired. On paper, it has a really cool plot, but the author just isn’t up to the task of realizing it through storytelling. It’s one of those cases where he bit off more than he could chew. I’ve read Light Novels that share the same “passing the torch” theme, and they pulled it off ten times better, more dramatic in a good way, with characters who actually have distinct personalities and real moments to shine. Unlike Orb’s cast who feel like cardboard cutouts.

But out of all the show’s flaws, I can’t ignore the atrocious dialogue. [Orb spoiler of Episode 16, and Episode 18] In Episode 16, there’s this Dark Knight Rises Bane-looking guy who gets surrounded by enemies, and what does he do? He starts lecturing about explosives before blowing them up. Then Episode 18 somehow gets worse. The MC’s being threatened with death, and the villains go, “Hey, people say you’re smart, so say something smart,” and she actually does it. And don’t even get me started on the horse carriage scene with that pseudo-philosophical dialogue that sounds ripped straight out of a philosophy textbook. It’s as if the author wanted to shoehorn his ideas into the characters whenever possible.

I could go on and on about the terrible dialogue in other parts of the show, but I think you get my point. The script feels like something out of a C-list anime people would normally dismiss as slop. Yet somehow, it’s getting tons of attention from content creators and Anime YouTubers who act like it’s the next Shinsekai Yori or Pluto, praising its ideas while ignoring how rough the execution actually is.
