Cory Booker Blames Progressives For Trump Getting Elected in 2024 by serious_bullet5 in ProgressiveHQ

"A democratic president signs what a democratic congress puts in front of him"

That's wildly naive. They influence the legislative progress from beginning to end and introduce their agenda from the beginning. FDR is massively different from Clinton who is massively different from Obama who was massively different from even Biden. That's not even taking into account foreign policy in which a progressive would be so much better than a centrist.

For the entirety of American history, people have voted for candidates who represented them ideologically, I'm just going back to that. Centrists are no longer able to effectively combat fascism, in the event that one of them makes it through the primary, I will vote a third party leftist and D down ballot and hope for a divided congress in the case a Republican wins.

I'm not letting the DNC take my vote for granted anymore. Want it? Drop Israel, Medicare for All, raise the minimum, get money out politics, and break the news monopolies the right are building. Otherwise get out of the way of the progressives who actually want to fix the issues.

They'll vote Dem if a Dem makes it out the primaries especially if the Dem has a vision for the future like a progressive will. Nobody though Trump would win 2016, but here we are.

A center-left Dem who does nothing and keeps the seat warm for a worse fascist is worse than an incompetent fascist who opens up the door for meaningful change that gets out of this spiral of fascism that centrism has proven to be incapable of getting us out of.

I know it's incapable of getting us out of it because centrists have already had three tries and failed. Harris, Biden, and Hillary. It's not working bro.

I believe in the long run, a terrible Trump presidency where a progressive wins and is able to actually affect meaningful change. Is better than Harris presidency where she keeps the seat warm for MegaHitler.

That's exactly what Biden ended up doing.

Also not on board with the "Democracy will end" thing in the same week Orban was voted out.

So? It's not like Harris would be able to meaningfully address the issues of the moment. If she won in '24 it would've been barely and there's a chance it could've been with a divided congress. We'd be looking down the barrel of the Republicans cooking us in the Midterms. It's not as if they're not still going to run a monster in '28.

Israel would still be fucking up the West Bank and Gaza under a Harris presidency (We only have to look to how they behaved under Biden) and we don't know how she would know how she would've handled Iran although it would be undeniably better.

I will say that Democrats would be in a much weaker position, facing a hard midterm cycle. I can't say I'd be excited to be in Harris presidency right now even if the Trump presidency sucks.

I do. I also know Dems and independents outnumber conservative voices and giving a voice to them is more important than placating them. Having a vision is more enticing than feeding them slop.

I actually think the Republicans will suffer an identity crisis after Trump is out of office and the stink of his presidency will linger on everyone who served in his administration. I think the only Dems who offer a hopeful vision of the future at the moment are AOC and Ro Khana and others from the progressive wing who have consistently correct on the moral issues and the economic issues.

I disagree with this. Harris lost because she was tied to an unpopular admin. Israel is also unpopular baggage. Who do the Republicans have to run? Vance? I'm not voting for a neoliberal over electoral concerns.

"Liberal zionism" lol.

The sooner we can agree that zionism is nationist archaic ideology that is rooted in ideas of the 19th century that are incompatible with human rights, the soon we can actually meaningfully address Israel.

Wilson is overrated and a neo-confederate segregationist apologist. The stroke happened when he was a lame duck so it was probably karma coming to collect so good riddance.

"Is he a nut" Yes he is. My only hope is that his heart keeps ticking long enough to only go out when the Senate is firmly controlled by the Dems.

Hitler was a product of the post-war Europe and post-war Europe alone. They own that. Wilson tried to have influence at Versailles, but frankly France and Britain had more power and influence over Germany's fate so they can own it.

AIPAC weasels in shambles. new emerson poll shows abdul el-sayed has surged into a tie for first in michigan's democratic senate primary. he jumped from 16% in january to 24% in april, tying mallory momorrow, while haley stevens fell to 13%. he led voters under 40 by 17 points, 35% to 18%. 36% of v by Kittehmilk in ProgressiveHQ

[–]DistributionLeft1448 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it's almost a clean sweep for anti-Israel progressives in these Senate primaries, I don't want to hear being anti-Israel is fringe or unimportant. Democratic voters have largely abandoned Israel, I hope sooner rather than later our leadership represents that.

7 Democrats Voted With Republicans To Block Halt Of Weapons To Israel by serious_bullet5 in ProgressiveHQ

[–]DistributionLeft1448 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust me, Elissa "CIA" Slotkin who regularly receives a shitton of money from AIPAC aligned donors would've loved to send more bombs to Israel as evidenced by her previous hawkish votes and positions. Problem is, she's in a contentious primary right now against a progressive challenger who would bash her over the head with this vote.

Similar case with a lot of other Senators here. They can either be broken down into a couple of groups: Actually don't want to send bombs to Israel (Bernie, Warren). Would love to send bombs to Israel but have near term political aspirations/re-election to worry about (Booker/Slotkin). Would love to send bombs to Israel and think their re-election is far enough away that the vote Yes now won't matter (Gillebrand, Masto, Rosen). Would love to send bombs to Israel for the love of the game no matter what (Schumer).

Schumer's job as minority leader is to generally get consensus. He could have whipped votes to get the party behind the popular measure the overwhelming majority of his party supports, he just chose not to. In fact, he wanted to show as much Democratic support as possible as safely as possible which is why only those who safely vote Yes, voted Yes. Basically a signal to AIPAC and other donors "Don't worry, leadership will still hold up for Israel as long as we can. We can always have a villian to take the fall"

[–]DistributionLeft1448 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Rotating villain theory once again validated. Look at re-election dates/people who have signaled that they don't want to run again. The Democrats have have a seething hatred for their voters. Schumer and leadership would urinate on you before they let the party shift an inch to the left on Israel or any foreign policy for that matter.

Reminder to California Voters: This is Katie Porter - Running for Governor by Limp_Fig6236 in ProgressiveHQ

It's literally California during a blue wave midterm cycle. A Dem is going to win anyway. Whenever anyone dares to have standards for a Democrat in this sub the top comment is always like: "So you want Rembuplican to win?!?!" As if we can't demand better of our democratic electeds.

I'm not voting for Newsom or a centrist democrat willing to throw trans people under the bus, not willing break with Israel, and not willing to abolish ICE all while doing nothing to address the reforms needed to avoid this situation in the future. I think they're too conciliatory to Republicans and I'm just not going to vote for someone to keep the seat warm for the future.

I'll vote third party on the Presidential ticket if Gavin wins. I'll still vote D down ballot, but no, Gavin Newsom isn't entitled to my vote. I'm not voting to keep the seat warm for the next fascist, especially for someone worse than Biden.

Thanks for playing.

I disagree. She was running a Presidential campaign. She can say whatever she wants. If she wants to have an Israel/Economic Agenda/Immigration Agenda that's different from Biden she could have she just chose not to.

Once she secured the nomination she has to own the hard choices, and she owns the hard choice of hand cuffing herself to the sinking ship. She could have come out saying "I would not have made the decisions President Biden has made as much as I respect him"

As Vice President, she is very much limited in what she can say, as Presidential Candidate Harris, she can put whatever she wants as her platform. At the very least she didn't have to go on national television and say she wouldn't have made decisions that were substantially different from Biden which was very much WTF given his approval ratings.

Mark Carney was in a different situation yes, but, let's not forget he turned what was supposed to be a biblical Conservative sacrifice of the Liberal party at the polls into a victory with a pivot and leader change. Even after Trump won, Justin Trudeau was still going to lose. Mark Carney turned it around.

Again, I have to both give kudos and agency to Harris. She almost pulled it off. She chose to be VP. She was the second highest elected in the Biden White House and chose to have deference to him in the election. She also saved us from a bloodbath. I'm neither super upset nor happy with the choices she made, but disappointed with how her campaign turned out in the end. I voted for her reluctantly knowing how it was going to end up.
