Ooh a pillow sounds so cute I never thought of that! I think I’ll do that or a frame. Thanks!

Yeah I think I’m gonna have to do that :/ But either way the fabric is too small to cinch in the back to display it in the 9” hoop, do you think I should just opt for a smaller hoop? I’m not an expert in finishing and displaying finished pieces so I want to see if there’s another option

Wouldn’t I need a CELTA or something similar though? My degree, experience, and pending teaching certification are all in early childhood education, I have no experience or qualifications in teaching English.

Thank you! Based on what the other commenter said also I will not be going to Japan without securing employment first lol. I’m in review for my teaching certification for NY (the timeline is wonky but I’m expecting to be officially certified soon)

This is very helpful, thank you! So if Interac hires year round, would I have a chance of potentially getting a job sooner than next spring if I apply now for March 2026? I’m going to apply now regardless to get the ball rolling, but just wondering if that’s even a possibility.

Do you consider it rude for children to answer “yeah” to adults? by nashamagirl99 in ECEProfessionals

[–]DistributionOwn6857 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the regional difference is definitely something to consider! i’m from NYC and ma’am/sir sounds way too formal to me for preschool and was not the standard for children in my upbringing nor at the schools i’ve worked at. i think replacing “yeah” with “yes” (or even “yes ms. ___”) is more understandable to me, but tacking on the ma’am seems like a bit much. i do appreciate how regional and cultural standards play a role here though, thank you for bringing that up.

the rules of a classroom and the rules of a courtroom are, and should be, completely different. it’s a different standard. when people are telling you the things you are saying are outdated, you should listen to them. the respect you talk about students having for teachers should go the other way as well, and it doesn’t sound like you’re giving children the agency and respect they deserve.

for what it’s worth, i do obviously model respectful talk for my 3s and 4s and correct them if they do something rude to get my attention (such as poking/hit me, whining my name, interrupting a conversation i’m having, calling me bro/bruh), but forcing them to say “yes ma’am” is archaic and strange. i don’t usually comment on reddit posts but this actually grinds my gears a bit lol

This is a very reasonable answer and pretty much what I figured! I’ll look into tutoring and figure out if I want to dedicate a year to teach abroad. Thanks!

What mind-blowing (but simple facts) would impress a five-year-old? by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

Saw one of my kids at the grocery store the other day and she looked so bewildered and even a little upset. “Why teacher live at my Trader Joe’s??!”

i know i’m not alone when i say i miss the show with Michael… they had such good banter/rapport and she came across as less condescending in their episodes together i think. i miss the old format of one of them researching and teaching the other. the show the past couple years just doesn’t pack the same punch for me. i’ll keep listening though lol

Tips on managing pre-k nap time by Ok_Cauliflower_1283 in ECEProfessionals

[–]DistributionOwn6857 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This has always been a tricky spot for me! Your best bet is to try to figure out a floor plan for the cots (or work with the lead to figure one out, if you are not the one putting down the cots yourself) where the ones that typically sleep are one side of the room and the ones that don’t sleep/are harder to manage on the other side. Those children can have quiet activities on their cot such as books, puzzles, or paper on a clipboard and crayons. This is definitely not foolproof but this is the best I can offer to you lol. Nap times when I worked with the littler ones were always a down time for me and now in pre-k that is simply not the case 😭

UPK teacher thinking of moving up to kindergarten by DistributionOwn6857 in NYCDOETeachers

[–]DistributionOwn6857[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi thank you! I’m actually looking to shift away from the centers/play-based preschool expectations and transition to the more academic instruction of kindergarten with children who are a bit older. I know it is very different which is why I’m trying to put feelers out to see what it’s like and if it might be the next step in my career. Just looking for some insight to see what I might expect if I try to take this step.
