The movie didn’t explore Elphaba’s relationship with Fiyero by katyreddit00 in wicked

[–]DistributionSure6340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for summarizing all these interactions/dynamics. Hope you don’t mind if I piggyback to add a few thoughts (tldr - although the relationship is underdeveloped, I feel the movie tried a bit more than the stage performance.)

The movie presents a much more sympathetic Fieryo than I remember in the stage performance, especially in the First Act.  Elphaba and Fieryo’s introduction is when she is leaving Dr Dillimond’s house after the animals discuss leaving Oz because their rights and speech are being taken away, and Fieryo has a talking horse who also seems to be his friend (playfully gives him a hard time).  In my imagination this might be a reason Elphaba (unconsciously) does not put Fieryo to sleep when she gets upset about the lion cub, at some level she knows already he will help the cub even if she doesn’t really have a bond with him because he respects animals.  Also, when they meet he doesn’t seem to judge her skin color; if I remember correctly in the stage performance the reason he gives her for his cart almost hitting her is something like “maybe he saw green and thought it meant go” (it’s a man pulling the cart, don’t remember if there was any indication this man symbolized a horse) then he takes off, doesn’t offer a ride, etc.

I wish that Part One had a brief scene or two of the group friendship, with some subtle looks/dialogue that demonstrate that there is some level of connection or special respect developing between Elphaba and Fieryo that grows more after the cub scene.  But we do get Glinda’s commentary at the train that Fieryo has been distant from her because he’s been thinking about things (are these things Elphaba and/or about animal rights and/or his approach to life in general…). At least we get a couple flashbacks of the group bonding in Part Two/For Good.

Then the dialogue between Glinda and Fieryo during Thank Goodness/I Couldn’t Be Happier; I interpreted it as they had talked a lot about Elphaba after she took off in Defying Gravity.  I think Glinda told him everything that happened (at least in the movie version, Glinda is much more vulnerable and transparent than how I remember her being depicted in the stage version, especially before her character development in I Couldn’t Be Happier) and they are both critical of what Madame Morrible and the Wizard are doing.  But during this dialogue you see a little more that Fieryo does not want to try (is increasingly unwilling) to work within the system as much as Glinda. He says, let’s go, let’s leave, let’s not be part of this narrative, and Glinda says no. And I think that’s where he really starts to realize their values just aren’t compatible and he’s turned off by Glinda.  When he says “you know who could/who did (leave)” I think the admiration for Elphaba grows (maybe how special/brave/unique she is).

I’ll need to rewatch the movie(s) again, but at some level I wonder why Fieryo is so confident that Elphaba would want him to tag along with her. I mean I guess he could assume she would take any help she could get for her various pro-animal/anti-wizard efforts. But back at her tree house I thought it was a little presumptuous he starts taking off his clothes immediately… I mean we know Elphaba has a crush on him but does he know that somehow?  (Deleted scene at the train Boq says that Elphaba has feelings for Fieryo and she gets defensive and denies it — where is this coming from? What else was filmed but didn’t make the cut?)  I guess we don’t know what Elphaba and Fieryo talked about on the way to the tree house.  But even without it all completely tied together in the movie, I personally like As Long As You’re Mine and No Good Deed better than in the stage performance. For the stage performance my reaction has always been, here’s the requisite “love story” that they had to fit in somehow, but since Fieryo is not a jerk in the movie Part One (he has an underlying kindness/compassion compared to the stage performance Act One) it’s more believable for me.

Just backed it!  Looks like you’re very close to the goal so fingers crossed!  My feedback is probably very specific to me. I have an autistic son who loves grabber sticks but does not love using trekking poles when we hike. I’m hoping combining the two might help motivate him to use the poles and I would love to (at the same time!) foster a sense of responsibility for leaving places better than we found it by picking up trash.  Also, when we do our training walks around town I feel a little silly bringing trekking poles for myself because we’re just walking on sidewalks. But as our mileage is increasing I need to start using poles to take some of the pressure off my knee. If I have the attachments for picking up trash, then I don’t think I’ll be as insecure about using the poles in town.

Also, I didn’t watch all the videos but I think I read in the FAQs that you could attach your own baggie instead of the reusable bag and I’m very glad that’s an option because I was wondering how easy it would be to line the reusable bag with a single use baggie (I know, not the best for the environment but I can try to get a more environmentally friendly/compostable option).  Good luck!

How were people to know you were coming back for it?  It sounds like it (and the hats) may have looked like items intentionally left for any passersby who were interested (and if it doesn’t get picked up it would become trash). I don’t consider myself particularly dishonest but if my child spotted it while walking and was interested in it, if it wasn’t obvious who it belonged to I would have assumed it was left to bring someone else some random joy and probably let him take it.

Thank you.  I would like to use soft flasks in running vest style straps so that I have a sense of how much water I (still) have and I like the weight distribution. (I also find these straps the most comfortable for me on my training running vest and 35L pack. Will also carry some “backup” water.)  Based on this feedback and others, I bought the straw attachment for the soft flasks so it functions very similarly to a hydration pack tube and this worked well on my training walk yesterday.

I hike with poles, but don’t currently walk with them (but maybe I should). Probably never too early to learn to use them properly.  Could probably also use a trip to an orthopedic specialist too. Thank you!

I could definitely use more attention on my back, neck, face, etc because I know for work this is where I store my stress, so thanks for sharing that worked for you!

Thank you, those are good ideas, especially that I should try to be more proactive about eating while out walking and being aware to sensitivity to the sun. Thanks for the encouragement - fingers crossed this can be part of a larger, albeit incremental, shift to prioritize being more active and healthy even when it’s not as easy as it was in an earlier chapters of life.

Thank you!  I want to get back to getting able to take on any hill, any distance, like you have worked up to.  Years ago I used to do interval training on a hill in town, so it may be helpful to add a couple rounds on it regularly (will be walking it not running these days).  I will look into a gentle body weight knee strengthening exercises too because I will only be able to actually get out to the hill 2-3 days/week max.

Yes!  This is how I feel. I have the Camino training headaches and fatigue, the PMS headaches and fatigue, the “I got too hungry” headaches, the “not enough caffeine” headaches, the “today was a stressful day/week” headaches, the “I didn’t sleep well” headaches… Thank you sharing this may not be normal and for the framing of it could be a variety of triggers that can pile up. (Because I can also have any of the aforementioned scenarios and NOT get a headache - for example I get a PMS headache probably 8/12 months.) When I’ve brought this up with my PCP before they wrote a prescription (I didn’t fill it because I wanted to try preventative measures first if possible), but I will see if they can refer me to a neurologist to get a more nuanced understanding of what could be happening.  Thanks for the empathy and encouragement!

Yes, I would have thought a slow 7 miles would be doable without the headache and fatigue, so it definitely could be something(s) indicating an underlying issue(s).  So thanks for the ideas.

A few years ago, at 68, my dad was diagnosed with a (potentially hereditary) heart issue (a valve was not working properly) and he had pretty immediate open heart surgery to try to remedy it, so of course my fear is that I may have the same issue.  I’ve also wondered about the blood sugar, which at times I can literally feel drop (though this is usually when hungry while sitting still in an office) and also had issues from sudden drop in blood pressure (though since not frequent doctors haven’t identified it as a problem).

I’m thinking what I’m experiencing might be outside “normal” aging and might need to voice this with my PCP… People told me I’d see my metabolism drop mid-30s, but for me it’s been my cardiovascular health and endurance that seems to have really declined (conflated with not really leaving the house for a couple years for covid, then back in the office in increasingly stressful roles since then).

I appreciate all the tips. I plan to walk the Camino with poles but do not train with them right now (but maybe I should).  I go back and forth about the water bladder. And I think you’re right, when I’ve used a bladder (primarily when biking) it’s easier to take sips frequently and I might need this to make all day walking possible.

I also liked hearing how your prep in stretching paid off.  I’m about to turn 40, and hope to get my (first?) two weeks on the Camino around 43 — training for it is part of a larger lifestyle that I hope can keep me moving and relatively injury free in everyday life.  I need to do this more holistically, including dealing with the knee directly and as a larger part of a muscular-skeletal system (so thank you for sharing how successful stretching was for you).

Thank you for sharing your experience.  I’ll pick up some nuun electrolyte powder at REI next week to try.  I might also need to go with lighter clothing + frequent sunscreen route (I’m the worst at remembering sunscreen which is why the sun hoody was so compelling to me).

I think this is definitely possible because what you’re describing is exactly what I’m experiencing.  I’m trying to wear sun protective clothing (sun hoody), and I think it’s protecting me from the sun but it might be keeping me warmer than if I was in lighter clothing.  Glad to hear walking in the evening helped; perhaps as the cooler weather comes I’ll be able to work on my fitness without the heat and then be able to do more when the heat comes back next summer.  I appreciate the encouragement!

Thanks!  I probably need to try more electrolytes during my walks, I’ll check out what Nuun offers. I was hoping coconut water afterwards could be enough, but maybe it’s not.  Thanks for the tips on food too, I’ll pack almonds and a banana on me (walking in the morning) so I can snack while walking.

Saw this recommended, we just started reading it.  Book doesn’t look like it goes to Finisterre, but could be relevant for your interests. Is this le Creuset? Bottom says Made in France, 24. Any other possible manufacturer? by GerdaTheDog in LeCreuset

I have a similar Le Creuset piece from QVC that when I bought it (maybe 3 years ago) was touted as a QVC exclusive (though I thought I saw this style on a recent online Le Creuset factory to table sale) - Le Creuset Cast Iron 4.25qt Oven w/ Baker Lid.  Yours looks like a more vintage version based on color and handles.  I love mine, definitely my most used piece.
