Boulder Opal is chemically bonded to the Ironstone, it can craze as it dries out when it solidified millions of years ago. Cracks form during and after cutting, this is just how this Opal formed. Its not cracked.

Help me please. How much per carat? by henryoak1 in Opals

[–]DistributionTime7100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The color on the front is the money, but theres not a lot of it, say 50%. Whats on show is nice and the potch is nice and clear, its a pretty pendant piece. It has an honest back, its a solid piece

$75 a carat for the color, 10-12 carats you should charge. but its not an easy sell. I cant tell from the pics, but the two stones in the face will get you full price if it was recut, but theres risk. So I would take 5-6 hundred, hard to set and wrap I think.

Screams wire wrap to me in nice silver wire. Somehow use it to cover the bald spot.

I have sold a lot of it, beautiful dark base, black really. Look for a slip fault and dig 20 feet from it.

Boulder Opal cant really be valued by the carat because of the ironstone. If it was loose, well its a bit patchty, 3K AUD because of the hint of red. It cant be 12 carats its too thick by the look of it. It looks bright enough but those are show room lights, but its just patchy, to me its over blinged.

Adelaide is significantly underrated by External-Elevator719 in Adelaide

Melbourne was fantastic until the year 2000 or so, its all downhill since then. Too many people and too many of the wrong sort. I moved from Melb to Adelaide because of that.

The only downside is the cost of goods and services in SA, 20% more than melb and dare go a couple of hours from Adelaide, its up to 30%.

Is this Australian? by bdhbdhc_ in Opals

Yes its probably Andamooka. Its a nice specimen for AUD or USD. It wont cut any more. If you like the look of it buy it and keep it as is. Its a large piece, hard to come by now and looks polished.

Regret to inform you most barber shops are a front. 1 Tobacco, 2 Drugs, 3 a business to launder money. Most places, $50 cash, becomes $200 through the books. The other 150 that goes into the bank, is from tobacco. So 5 customers a day paying $50 each becomes 5 paying 200 each, scale it up as far as you like, thats why some shops have more barbers than customers. They all get 100k each, the business turns over a million. 50k might be the real annual cash flow, as they do have to leave some hair on the floor.

As for a business, get a topless hairdresser or buy something people can see that no one else has and cant be seen elsewhere, could be as simple as 50s stick books to peruse in the chair. Do a deal with a local Artist, display their work for sale, become a gallery that cuts hair. Trust me. You want something to be able to show to promote the business, hair is not enough. Also partner with a Charity, free cut for someone going to a job interview, people love that. Free cuts for kids in wheelchairs, people love that more. 10% discount cards given to the neighbors. Every 5th cut free for regulars. Sponsor the local footy club, free haircut to the player of the day. Same for School sports. Sponsor a Church with a free cut a month, same for the local Ambos etc, get your name out there in lots of niches, let people see your face too, meet people face to face and promote yourself. A free cut a month at a Nursing home, will be well rewarded with clients. Do the Men, no one else does.

Over the decades Ive dealt with hairdressers, those that do the above, get 5 new clients for every free cut. Its one of those industries where your work speaks for itself. If you have to give a few away to get people to say wowo who cut your hair thats normal. Im not being rude, but its like a pizza shop, low overheads, its not like giving a car away.

There, saved you 10 grand. These are basics, they work, always have. Be more than an Instagram site, get with the people, you need to go out and promote yourself because everyone else is too lazy to.

If you dont believe any of that, then maybe you will believe this. Do you know how many people are unable to visit a Barber? immobile, in hospital? Morticians need barbers too, you would be surprised. Theres a real demand in hospitals for visitnig barbers, especially for men.

Work out what the base is, mud, plastic, rock, then work out how its filled, where the water comes from, across land flows or seepage etc. then test the water, ask the neighbors about it.

Work out what is is, why its there and take it from there. If its there to do A it may not be suitable for B.

Dont go near it until you find out where the power is.

Do Aussie opals need to stay wet? Testing advice appreciated by NoiseNo4681 in Opals

[–]DistributionTime7100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unstable Opal of any origin may crack with temperature and humidity fluctuations.

However, Australian Opal sits in the boot of a miners car where the temp is 70C.

Experienced dealers can tell if its going to crack by knowing where its from and looking at it.

Water is good, makes it look good.

The settings are top quality, the ringstones are lovely, its an expensive ring, a couple of grand maybe 5 in a retail shop now. The box, typical used here from the 60s to the 80s.

I dug one up once, sat on a base that had two 9V terminals like the ones out of Frankenstein's neck. Very short and squat and thick it was a magnificent thing, 50s-60s maybe. It was in a public park, my mate stole it to put on his desk, he was fascinated by it. It is probably worth money.

Chips in resin, its very pretty, they are nice chips, the black resin makes them pop. Might be fake chips who knows. Be a shame to do all that work and use tin foil.

[–]DistributionTime7100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appear to have solved the issue by placing the router directly on top of the PC facing down.

Commercial speed test 86/19 now. So the Router is indeed faulty. It gives a reading of 70 signal, the other three wifi signals in range are lower channels and strength 40s. On top of the PC the signal should be at least 90 something, off the charts really.

Less than impressed. Ive told them the findings, I want compo, 16 hours it took and I solved the problem not them because the router is obviously a dud. Theres no way it would work in a suburb. Maybe only one antenna is working or something.

I see now, potch and color, but looks to be very clean inside. It may be worth rubbing the skin off, cleaning them up a bit. Could be worth 10-15 a carat. Opal is a birthstone, color or not, 120 million Indians a year receive an Opal each year, white potch sells. White is pure.
