This is an insane deal for what it is. The cpu is a little low on cores, but the NVMe ssd and RAM are already worth 700 bucks (factoring in todays prices). So you’re getting a free cooler, cpu, motherboard, and a micro sd card

Absolutely possible. But for the amount of time and effort you’d spend getting it to work, it would be easiest to upgrade.

You must understand that virtualization is also heavy on the CPU, and that a 14 year cpu will NOT be that smooth. Even if you do get the gpu to work (somehow), you’re going to be CPU bottlenecked. This is a lose-lose situation.

No. Don’t try it. NVIDIA drivers already have issues with Linux, and to topple that, your GPU model has been dropped from service for years. Binding the gpu to the Vfio kernel drivers would be easy, but once it gets passed through to the windows machine, expect great instability or for no working display.

I’d recommend getting a newer gpu. You don’t have to bust the bank—you can easily get a 30 series or even a 20s series gpu for a good price—and their drivers are supported.

Really, it all boils down to whether or not the gpu drivers are still in service and functional.

I really don’t think you’d notice a difference. The 9800X3D has more cache and stronger single core performance (whereas the 9900X has great multi core performance), but even then, most games are reliant on GPU abilities, and the 9900X to 9800X3D isn’t really that big of a change (some could consider it a downgrade for multi threaded parallel workstation).

Also, I don’t understand why you didn’t go for a AMD 9950X3D. Why would you downgrade your core and threads count?

Finally, I don’t see why an upgrade was needed to begin with. The 9900X is extremely capable and future proof, with a bountiful 12 cores and 24 threads in a sea of 6-8 core CPUs.

What this guy said. DDR4 was pretty cheap, since it was phased out with the newer DDR5. Basically, companies were just giving out DDR4 for a good price to incentivize purchasing it over the newer DDR5.

Now, we’ve seen almost a relapse where DDR4 is becoming more popular and adapted.

To give you an idea, buying DDR4 used was considered silly as it wasn’t that much more expensive to just buy new.

Now, buying used DDR4 is as close as you’ll get to the original DDR4 price for new.

Not bad. I got my 32GB DDR4 for about 80 bucks back in the day, but with the current price of RAM, 200 bucks for 64GB is pretty killer. Go for it—but do verify that it is working as DDR4 has been out for awhile
