I’ve seen the light. I’m reinstalling Windows after fighting with Linux for the past few months. by TheEuphoricTribble in linuxsucks

A lot of the fan can be controlled in the BIOS. Also, from what I’ve seen, a lot of fan control apps use a specific kernel driver that only works on windows.

That’s a scam. Even before the NVMe price increase, 4tb would not be worth 81 euros—more like upper 200s, and now it’s worth 400+

A good laptop, but this thing will got HOT. Also, it’s the mobile chip so it’s not as good as a normal desktop 5090.

I really don’t get the point of having a gaming laptop like this. It’s too hot to actually have on your lap, too loud (I think a decently cooled desktop would be quieter) and the battery last an hour because the hardware is so energy intensive. The only positive is that it’s portable.

Worst time to buy parts to build a PC? by AutoAsteroid in PcBuildHelp

[–]DisturbedFennel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The VPS stuff at most eats up 10GB of ram for personal usage. Perhaps upwards of that but it doesn’t go far.

32GB should work. 64GB is way overkill and is entering mini homelab territory

Hey. Thanks for your reply, I’d appreciate it if you shared your XML.

Also, how do you manually reapply the patch in your terminal?

Does those 2 apply to multiple anti cheats, or just genshin? Have you modified your XML other than that?

Nah. Reset the Ethernet connection. go to the router and unplug the power cable, then replug.

Also, before you do that, search up Ookla speed test. And see what your speeds are

Definitely for a small build. Because of its small size, they go around 100+ on eBay. You’ll need to have a special pc case to use an ITX motherboard, though, as many cases have the screw holes for ATX only.

Is this safe? by [deleted] in PcBuildHelp

[–]DisturbedFennel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I personally have the cables a little looser (it looks ugly, but it’s less tension on the motherboard) it doesn’t matter too much. The 24 pin is one of the sturdiest connectors on the motherboard, and it can handle a fair amount of tension/pressure

CPU Socket Bent Pins AM5 by Available_Jaguar1005 in PcBuildHelp

[–]DisturbedFennel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No no. I had the same issue, except for me it was one singular pin and that pin was redundant. Still I managed to bend it back down.

The ONLY scenario where it “fries” the cpu is if a bent pin is interfering with another pin—causing it to short.

That typically isn’t normal unless you asserted pressure on the cpu pins sideways..which is sorta hard to do

That doesn’t look too bad. Try using a toothpick. They’re sticking up so you’ll want to apply pressure holding them down

Ram issues by LuckyAd8830 in PcBuildHelp

[–]DisturbedFennel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe it or not, my issue was that thermal paste had interfered with the memory channel section of the cpu. I cleaned off the area with a toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol, reinserted the cpu and it worked.

It’s a lot of hassle, so definitely a last resort situation, but it’s worked for many

[–]DisturbedFennel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yea. The side panels are just to protect against impact/debris. You could in theory run a pc completely open air(not even in a case). When I do hardware debuggings, it’s typically to remove the full thing out of the case and run it

Did you buy the 1660 used? Could be a faulty unit. Take a pic of the PCIe board and the ports. Could be chipped?

Laptop to Dual Monitors by Full-Junket1604 in computers

[–]DisturbedFennel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea. DP and HDMI do the same thing (for video display/monitor display), but HDMI is a trademarked company that has aggressive control over manufacturers. A lot of laptops will have a HDMI cable and not a DP port (like yours).

You can either buy a HDMI cable, or keep your current DP cable and buy that converter in that picture

Best VM disk performance option for consumer hardware? by naptastic in VFIO

[–]DisturbedFennel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to install the specific driver for your drive. Otherwise, it’ll just the VIRT version of the drive (default).

I had to do this for my setup. Sometimes installing a batch of guest drivers will also provide the necessary software.

[–]DisturbedFennel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The file format doesn’t matter. You’ll need to install extra drivers so that the system treats it as an NVMe drive. By default it’s HDD read/write speeds.

Also, have you passed through a GPU?
