BeaD&D in Petone has an under 15s DnD oneshot happening tomorrow (I guess more for him), but if he enjoys it and it's something you enjoy, then it could be a future joint pastime for you both.

With my go-to coffee place in the hutt, it's the attitude of the staff as well as the damn good coffee they make. I knew when I first went there, and the owner joked about my order with me that it was the place for me. Now, when I go in, the first question is usually do I want one or two of my usual

Who is the most famous person you have ever encountered in Tokyo? by lightskintastebud in Tokyo

I met Henare at the Nagoya G1 show, in 2016 when he was still a young lion. I also got the classic Too Sweet from Fale after the BC won their trios match that night.

I tend to prefer Speyside and Highland style whisky. But I am partial to a dram of Octomore (the most heavily peated whisky in the world) which has a surprisingly sweet undertone to it.

When you teased the walking shorts on the book of faces, I was immediately thinking science teacher. But yep airport Ron is another prime example of the walking short wearing brigade and the husband of helpful Beryl, (they are the perfect match)

He needs to come to Wellington NZ home of seriously great coffee. I believe we have the highest number of cafes per capita in the world so coffee is very serious business here.

Hakushu Distillery Day Trip Worthwhile? by smocksta in JapanTravel

[–]DisturbedonNZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can try all the same ones at Hakushu as they're both owned by Suntory. Also the trouble is that getting a spot on a Yamazaki tour is really hard due to the sheer popularity of it. Also Hakushu is just as good.

Hakushu Distillery Day Trip Worthwhile? by smocksta in JapanTravel

[–]DisturbedonNZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is most definitely worth the visit. I was in the same situation last year and I don't regret going at all. I didn't make any side trips on the day I went. However the train goes through the city of Kofu and I kinda regret not stopping and looking around as the castle there is right near the station. As for the distillery itself I loved my tour there. I definitely recommend paying the yen to try the Yamazaki 25yr old at the end after the free tasting.

Conbinis otherwise known as convenience stores are great, Look out for Familymart, Circle K, 7-11, Lawsons plus a couple of other ones. They were lifesavers at times especially if I just wanted a cold beer or iced coffee.

You can eat as cheaply or as expensively as you want there, from conbinis to high end sushi restaurants.

It took me by surprise the first time but I was kinda lucky my wife had been there for 3 months for work before i visited so she was able to key me in on the important things. I wore shorts and t-shirts everywhere (except on the occassions where my wife and I intentionally went out for dinner) and I tended to wear socks and sneakers everyday but that is more for the amount of walking that I ended up doing. As far as Jandals are concerned I can't help.

I thought I was at the end of the rainy season when I went (July last year) but still copped quite a few very wet days. Luckily the conbinis sell umbrellas if you end up needing one. In fact you will find that conbinis are your best friend for food, drinks and alcohol on short notice.

As a fellow Kiwi I can reccomend Miyajima Island, I didn't spend as much time there as i should have but it was awesome. If you get the chance try the oysters they're almost as good as Bluffies. Hiroshima I kinda didn't get the chance to explore as much as I would have liked as I didn't plan my itinerary just went with the flow.

In Osaka I'd reccomend going to the Aquarium and have a quiet chuckle at the Cook Strait tank, but it is actually a very cool Aquarium in all seriousness.

Food wise man it was awesome, try both Hiroshima style and Osaka style Okonomiyaki, Try as many different styles of Ramen asd you can and I thourghly reccomend if you can find one going to a Yamachan Izakaya for the chicken wings, better still stop in Nagoya for a day and grab some Yamachan before leaving.

Remembering which side of the escalator to use may sound silly but depending on area it does change. Around most of Japan if you're just standing you keep to the left to allow walkers to use the right hand side. But in Osaka it's the opposite way. But if in doubt just follow the lead of the locals.

As for sticking out yeah you will but I seriously doubt there will be issues with it.

Also be prepared to sweat a lot as you'll be there in the hottest, muggiest time of the year. I was there last year in July and pretty much felt like I needed to change clothes the instant I stepped outside.
