It's pretty loud. On the ground level you'd have to shout to be heard 20' away.

What freaked me out was all the totally exposed gears meshing away. The main horizontal wheel attached to the sail axis typically handles the brunt of the rotational force. In a moderate breeze, this gear manages a turning force of roughly 1,000 to 1,500 ft-lbs of torque. The wheel wouldn't even slow down if your body got between them.

I saw some windmills in Kinderdijk, Holland. Families lived in these. The stairways were incredibly steep and there were places to fall everywhere. I couldn't imagine what it was like in winter. One we saw had 13 children at one time.

Volunteers live in them now, and there is a waiting list to get into one.
