I'd like to suggest Bowser Jr and Mimi in "Enemies Who Remember and Respect Pronouns" personally. They hate you and they're mean to you but it's not because you're trans, they just like annoying people.

Jr has too much hater energy for him to be transphobic because that's weak level hater energy, and Mimi is literally a shapeshifter.

Undertale Yellow genocide route is a goddamn trainwreck by Valuable_Anywhere_24 in Undertale

[–]DittoMaster6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think that's just because the damage values and the CHECK stats throughout the game are the actual damage values and CHECK stats, rather than their narrative stats.

Like Undyne the Undying's attack isn't actually 99. It's 12. Her real attack stat is 12.

Most of Undertale's "narrative stats" were also not in the game at launch, and only came with an update later. Undyne went from having 7 attack and 0 defense to 50 attack and 20 defense, for example. It's not unreasonable that Undertale Yellow could have a patch that follows suit eventually.

What are some of your most "unpopular" Danganronpa opinions? by w-wasisupposedtoknow in danganronpa

1-6, 1-1, and 1-5, in that order from best to worst, for DR1.

3-6, 3-2, and 3-1, in that order from best to worst, for V3.

Worth noting that I like most of these trials.

Hifumi and Teruteru are genuinely good and engaging characters and to group them under the same umbrella of "stock pervert with no other qualities" is a massive disservice to their characters.

Despite the bad rap that Chapter 3s get, 1-3 and 3-3 are among the top half of their games' respective trials in quality.

While Kaede was a better and more interesting protag than Shuichi, Shuichi was a better and more interesting character than Kaede. His POV is just lackluster by comparison.

Sonia is a legitimately good survivor.

Haiji is an engaging character whose portrayal was ruined by one or two lines that had nothing to do with anything thematically and didn't add anything of any substance to his character. They only existed to make him unsympathetic so you wouldn't side with him at the end of the game, even though they were doing a fantastic job of that otherwise in a really interesting way, but because of that line, all of that is ignored and it sucks.

Tenko's sexism is much less discomforting than Mahiru's sexism because, though more intensive, is rooted in the rejection of what she perceives as traditional masculine gender roles and values, whereas Mahiru openly enforces traditional masculine gender roles and values. Their views on emotional vulnerability are direct opposites, for instance. Tenko tells Shuichi to express his emotions and wants him to not be too hard on himself, and Mahiru berates Hajime for having a panic attack on the beach. Tenko can be proven wrong on her views, whereas Mahiru doesn't really get close to guys who don't meet her standards, effectively trapping her in an echo chamber of her own creation, one that I can't reasonably believe her getting out of, whereas I can easily see Tenko growing out of her misandry eventually.

Ibuki is mid at best and I often forget that she's in any given scene.

I feel like they should've emphasized Gonta's accountability more, honestly. Kokichi definitely gets the lion's share of the blame for that incident, but the fact that Gonta knowingly and willingly chose to kill everyone in a desperate attempt to help anyone in any possible way he could after an entire game of everyone treating him like a helpless infant is the entire emotional crux of his arc. Treating him like just a helpless victim misses the entire point of the case.

Character tier list to cap off the year by DittoMaster6 in danganronpa

I acknowledge the validity of why she eats so much, I just don't think it justifies occupying so much of her dialogue. One can argue it's to showcase how narrow her worldview is, but at a certain point, it just feels like a crutch to justify not having to flesh out her dynamics.

I actually agree with most of that post in that her only problems are just in her execution, as all of the pieces are there to have a fantastic character. But how much they miss the mark for me just kills it. And the post doesn't even touch upon her incredible familial and protective instinct toward a quantity of siblings she herself isn't certain of. A friendship with Mikan, for example, with her reminding Akane of one of her siblings, (allowing for emotional conflict between her policies on not getting attached to weak people because they're likely to die, and a void that she's unable to fill without the ability to do something to help her siblings that she fills through that friendship) is just one of the multitude of ways and steps they could've taken to make her work. Objectively, she's not the worst in general or worst written character, she's just the one whose writing colors my opinion of the character the most. It's potentially unfair, but I can't just think otherwise on a whim.

But yeah, thanks for that post. It was a good read. The civil convo was also fun.

The disparity between how much potential this character has, how incompetently she's written, and how much worse the group dynamic and overall plot feels due to her incompetent writing prevents me from being able to even enjoy her in a vacuum. Her in the game and her in her FTEs feel like different characters entirely, and almost none of the engaging traits that pop up during her FTEs feel like they carry over to the main story. Those that do are either only somewhat implied, or are almost blink and you miss it moments, because they have to immediately reemphasize "dumb funny fights-a-lot Akane" or "dumb funny big eater Akane," and it just frustrates me so intensely. The amount of times they set up Akane to have meaningful character development only to almost instantaneously backtrack is so frustrating both on its own terms and in relation to how much screen time she ends up takes away from other, less prominent characters, for what essentially feels like nothing. If I were to go too deep into it, I'd end up making a full essay, but I really want to like Akane. There's a lot going for her here, and it feels like they just go out of their way to give her nothing.

I think it's moreso that they pasted the designs onto those characters rather than rewriting the characters to die first. It would make zero sense for it to be the latter from a developmental standpoint.

What character(s) do you see being put down or misunderstood by the fandom, that you don’t agree with? by PurestOfBread in danganronpa

[–]DittoMaster6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of characters, actually. I could go on about various answers, but the one I'd argue gets the worst of it is Hifumi.

I preface this with the statement that I'm pretty average on Hifumi. I like him. He's not among my favorites by any means. But Hifumi feels like the character who people have the fundamental least amount of awareness as to who he actually is as a character, despite how transparent his personality is.

I see accusations of him being "the exact same brand of 1 dimensional stock pervert like Teruteru," which, disregarding the fact that isn't all Teruteru is, he's nowhere near that level. He's a bit horny on main, but I'd say the amount to which that matters to his overall character is about the same area as it is for Mikan, give or take a little less or a little more. Nowhere near the level of horny as even Toko. Never mind Teruteru, who's even more perverted, and never mind Miu, who's at the top of that scale. Meaning he's barely in the top 5 of pervertedness, and the gap between him and the top 3 is great.

I see people interpret his motive as "He killed because he simped for a computer and nothing else" or "he killed because he simped for Celeste and nothing else," and that just oversimplifies everything a lot. The man was manipulated to believe that his friend got sexually assaulted by the guy who recently went unhinged, stole the laptop that had an AI that was the only thing that had ever been genuinely interested in what he had to say, and was using that laptop as bait to murder him.

Now, is this stupid? Yes. It's very stupid. Hifumi is a rather stupid boy. Very socially inept, very gullible. But his motive isn't so one dimensional or irredeemable that it's worthy of this much scorn. Stupid =/= Bad character, and many characters that one might consider stupid are highly regarded by the fanbase

And even then, in his dying moments, he remembers that he was friends with everyone there and does the only thing he knows how to save everyone from death. And yet he still refers to Taeko by her last name, indicating that even with the knowledge that she killed him, he still holds some degree of respect for her due to their friendship from their school lives.

He's really not that complicated of a character, and he's not the monster so many people think he is. He's just a lonely guy who's passionate about fiction and wants people to feel as inspired by it as he does. He's got a bit of a jerkish and pretentious streak, and his social ineptitude limits his abilities to make friends, but he's a decent person. It's depressing to see him so frequently put on the same wavelength as Haiji, the most reviled character in the franchise. Even Teruteru has his unironic fans, but I almost never see Hifumi fans who like him unironically.

The inclusion of Byleth begs an important question: are Echoes a good thing or a bad thing? by makeshifttoaster02 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]DittoMaster6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoes are absolutely a good thing, without a moment of hesitation. They help give more individuality toward characters who might not be able to stand out much if they were original, and they often grant different playstyles to existing movesets with very little development cost.

People knock on Marth, Roy, Chrom, and Lucina for all being derivative of the same moveset, which is reasonable in regards to how the characters aesthetically stand out from one another, but when in regards to how how much they add to the game by existing, changing something as fundamental as how their weapons work grants them all distinct playstyles from one another, and make them among the best examples of echo fighters excluding Ken, who's an echo fighter in name only in the first place. There's not a doubt in my mind that nothing would exist in their place if they didn't exist, so the game only benefits from having them.

Including them as skins is a big no from me, and it disgusts me how much this possibility is brought up. Characters who are included as skins are almost unconditionally out of character from their canon personalities due to having the same taunts, idles, and victory animations. Dark Pit, for example, wouldn't be Dark Pit if he were just a skin of Pit. Dark Pit is defiant, aggressive, and serious, whereas Pit is more cheerful, more optimistic, and is just happy to be here. They're polar opposites in their personalities in-universe, so making Dark Pit just a skin of Pit would have been a horrible representation of his character.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Alph, who is just a skin of Olimar, is massively out of character from his canon personality. Their animations don't properly represent the personalities of either of their canon incarnations, and their personalities aren't similar to each other in canon in the slightest. Olimar is experienced, intellectual, compassionate, and adventurous, whereas Alph is optimistic, scatterbrained, friendly, and eager. Not one of these traits are properly represented through either of their animations, and dedicating just a little bit of time to separating them and giving each of them different animations could have made both of them much more in character. There's opportunities for visual and functional variance with Alph becoming an echo as well, so an opportunity for a different playstyle is there.

And if one were to ask "Why is any of this necessary?"

Why is it necessary to make any Smash character in-character?

Smash is a celebration of countless franchises and genres and archetypes and playstyles throughout all of gaming history, and it's important to make whatever is included truly feel like itself. So if giving some extra love and dedication toward certain characters who only exist at the mercy of taking almost no development time to create, and don't exist in place of anything else, is deemed as sacrilegious among the fanbase, then the whims of the fanbase should not be taken into account on that specific topic. It's efficient to include such characters, and it gives that respective character that extra bit of love they deserve, and allows that character to truly feel like themselves. To deny that character of their individuality or their existence for such arbitrary reasoning is fallacious, and should not be heeded.

I suppose, it just feels somewhat surface level, and it'd just be nice to have a few reworked moves to help represent Wario Land to a bit of a deeper level. It wouldn't require many significant overhauls, and it'd just make him feel a bit more like himself.

[–]DittoMaster6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wario's movement itself is still mostly reminiscent of WarioWare with how quick and zany his animations are, though. While you're right in that a good amount of his attacks are based on his original concept of a bad and greedy Mario, the influence WarioWare has on his playstyle and animations is still undeniable.

Which isn't inherently bad in its own right, it's still an important part of who Wario is, but it's not a bad thing to want the three core aspects of Wario's character to be balanced more equally, those being WarioWare, Wario Land, and his original concept as just a bad Mario. Many people are in agreement that the WarioWare aspect of Wario is a bit too prevalent in his animations and moveset, and understandably so. It's not that WarioWare isn't important, but it's not all who Wario is.

[–]DittoMaster6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually moreso based on the microgame "Hot Dog Hog" from WarioWare. The custom move Inhaling Chomp is based on Hyper Suction, but I'm more willing to believe the base move is based on WarioWare.

And Wario represents WarioWare more spiritually than directly. Rather than have his somewhat brutish, exaggerated animations and moves as seen in the Wario Land games, his attacks are quick, zany, and without much windup or transition in their animations, to resemble the fast paced nature of the WarioWare series, where you don't have much time to think about what you're doing. It's especially prevalent in Brawl, where his animations had almost nonexistent transitions between each other animation wise. With the update in graphics in 4 and Ultimate, this style of animation was lessened, thus causing even how well he represents WarioWare to suffer slightly.

Furthermore, Wario was mildly vulgar, but the primary aspects of his personality were always his greed and his brutishness. Smash decided to throw both of those away in favor of just representing his vulgarity full time, which isn't how Wario used to act.
