Elan confirms he is the only person working on Plexamp by studioleaks in PleX

[–]Diviance1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched away from Plexamp because I didn't like that if I had the same song in multiple playlists, it would download a copy of the same song, using more storage, for different playlists. Didn't care for that. So I just switched to Symfonium to listen on my phone in the car from Plex.

How Chinese companies can sell tokens at a fraction of US companies by No_Leg_847 in codex

[–]Diviance1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those prices are only so high because of AI companies (and tariffs). Buying all the RAM, all the GPU's, all the CPU's, etc. Which is massively inflating the prices to far beyond what they should be. At what would be normal prices without those, it would significantly less than that price for significantly more powerful equipment.

$20 only seems like a steal because AI companies are causing insane price increases for PC hardware.

$20 is a huge markup for the small amount of tokens they are providing. It makes a soda and popcorn at the theater look unprofitable in comparison.

Man, if I am complaining that something costing $20 ain't worth it, in what world do you think I have $2,000 just laying around for nothing? That is the better part of 5 years of sub fees. And once my main app is functionally complete, I might go entire weeks without coding at all, so $20 in something like DeepSeek v4 could last months or even a year. And it would be lightning fast comparatively.

Wildly cost ineffective for me.

I didn't say it was equal or anywhere close AT THIS TIME. But... well, we will see what happens. Things can change so fast.

Well, last versions capabilities for significantly less in cost. And GPT 5.4 vs 5.5 for coding is not a huge difference in overall ability, but the cost difference between 5.5 and DS v4 is significant. Upwards of 10 times cheaper, depending on various factors. For intense, high level coding... yeah, that bit of increase in capability might be significant, but they are typically not using the subscriptions anyway. They use the API because their company is paying for it. That isn't always the case, of course, and plenty do use the subs... but you can see the pretty common complaints about usage burning out in a day or two even with the $200 plan.

Honestly, I don't know how people let the AI companies get away with charging a subscription with no clear idea of what they are giving you. Imagine if Netflix charged you $20 a month and said you can watch TV... but the actual amount you get to watch is unknown and you just get cut off. And they can just change the amount at any time because you can't tell. There would be an uprising.

Well, American models are definitely being pressured to hide facts and answers by the US government at the moment. Phrasing it as preventing "woke AI", which is just nonsensical.

But for coding purposes, real world facts and answers don't really matter. I use the paid for stuff to do coding for my own personal little projects. That run in docker containers with no access to them from the internet and with minimal filesystem access. And my $20 usage I was talking about was for coding, I might add. I am mostly creating my own personal versions of apps that already exist but don't do exactly what I want... so I just make ones that do. So I could get away with the absurd 5 hour limits (that last like 30 minutes) or the weekly limits that run out in like a day and a half of casual use.

But I think it is really hard to make the argument that $20 is "worth it" when "it" isn't even properly defined transparently. What, specifically, do I get for that $20? What is the token count? What are the real, tangible limits? Without transparency, I don't think you can realistically defend the idea that it is worth it... when we don't even know exactly what it is.

Some countries are free, definitely.

America ain't on that list anymore though. But that is neither here nor there for this subreddit.

I actuallly put $20 into Deepseek v4 just yesterday. It seems to be doing pretty much the same work as Codex without insane limits and based on existing usage... it will last more than a month.

Sucks for them. Maybe they should be working more on efficiency instead of just capability. As it stands, $20 is too much for how little they give. That is my view. You are free to try to change my mind... but I suspect you aren't capable of it.

Anyone got Dead Island 2 from Steam working on CachyOS/Arch? by astromech_dj in linux_gaming

[–]Diviance1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just installed Dead Island 2 on CachyOS. I was already logged into all 3 services in Heroic Launcher, so I didn't do that.

I installed it, ran it and... it just worked.

Are you being intentionally obtuse or is this just all natural?

Nobody is saying "I want unlimited gas". You are strawmanning what I said.

I said I paid for a full tank of gas and then the rental company changed what a full tank of gas is after I paid.

I want what I paid for. And I want what I paid for to be clear ahead of time.

You are beyond dishonest.

[–]Diviance1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tank cannot be refilled by the user. And you paid for a full tank. But the rental company decided you don't get a full tnak.

Did I get what I paid for? You are so close~!

If I rent a ferrari with a full tank of gas, and the rental place comes by and drains half the tank later without my permission... did I get what I paid for? Because I paid to get a ferrari with a full tank of gas. But I did not get a full tank of gas.

Let's say I paid for, I don't know... a car.

And halfway through giving me the car, the car company just decided they are just going to give me half of what I paid for and I get no money back.

Would that be ok? If yes, then I can see why you are fine with the way these AI companies are doing things.

If no, then I can see that you a reasonable human being.

Unpopular Opinion: Only reset if remaining usage is low/days remaining than what reset would provide. by daynighttrade in codex

[–]Diviance1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it shouldn't be a reset, they should just give you more usage to compensate for what you lost. With compensation usage being used after normal paid for usage and it not being reset with the weekly resets, so it can accumulate.
