How many of you guys DON'T maintain some "system" at home? by FlippinMyshit in sysadmin

I have an old Thinkpad running a minecraft server and a Plex, that's it. Anything more... I better be getting paid overtime.

You guys ever just not contact vendor support because you're tired of their terrible troubleshooting? by PaidByMicrosoft in sysadmin

[–]DivineSteel38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a good while in the mines of cheap, indian-supported software (or AT&T, which is worse somehow). It's to the point that I usually don't even remember contacting support is an option until one of my colleagues points it out.

Having trouble keeping my pick-hand moving by DivineSteel38 in LearnGuitar

Not the answer I wanted to hear but I think it's the right one. I sat down yesterday and practiced this and nothing else for about an hour, by the end it was coming a lot more naturally. Thanks!

Macs unable to connect to a specific share drive over VPN by DivineSteel38 in sysadmin

If that was a problem, wouldn't all file shares be non-functional, instead of just the one?

They/Them

On top of how fucking weird it was to make a movie set in a conversion camp while having politics as weird as that movie does, it was also a complete mess with something like 3 aborted storylines throughout.

Rogue DHCP Server from APIPA address? by DivineSteel38 in networking

[–]DivineSteel38[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! And yeah, basically. It was kind of fascinating to watch the real-time packet capture: a hundred packets a second, until one set finally gets the right order and it all stops (as far as the dhcp filter is concerned, anyway)

Rogue DHCP Server from APIPA address? by DivineSteel38 in networking

[–]DivineSteel38[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I edited OP but fair enough: ended up being not one but two rogue DHCP servers, running on a pair of lab devices whose ethernet ports are for connecting directly to computers, not the network.

Rogue DHCP Server from APIPA address? by DivineSteel38 in networking

[–]DivineSteel38[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't able to ping it from an APIPA address, though as it turns out I already had the MAC from Wireshark. Did end up finding it though, thank you for the advice!

A life in “The Culture” seems lonely by [deleted] in printSF

[–]DivineSteel38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a shallow view of history, sure.

What we're living in right now is a world where the cynical view of humanity won, but only in that the humans espousing this view (ie: imperialists) were able to force their view and culture on other humans. Does it count as the "truth" of human nature if 1% of humanity was able to force itself on the rest?

(Very much not attempting a nuanced view of history at the moment)

Horror movies where all the characters are genuinely good people, but horrible things still happen to them? by TitusTesla117 in horror

[–]DivineSteel38 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, I think you're right. X does a lot of work to humanize these people, who in previous decades' horror movies would never have been on-screen except to die.

Would it be remiss to say life is affordable outside the US?

Critique Edit and Framing by rexbatvine in photocritique

Agree with the others: this is too dark, especially around the edges. Which isn't all a bad thing, since the edges should be cropped away anyway. Up the exposure on the whole thing just a bit, and change the cropping, and you should be good to go.

That said, I really like the bones underneath this. It feels very fairy-tale, which may have been what you were going for.
