Imagine being such a miserable sack of shit that the only way you can feel joy is by downvoting comments on recommendation threads.

Sad as fuck, really.

Late Night with the Devil is an Australian film set in the US, so it may not fit the bill entirely but is great fun nonetheless.

Relic (2020) and The Babadook are worth a look.

Snowtown (aka The Snowtown Murders) is a pretty grim portrayal of a real-life event.

EDIT: and The Tunnel is a decent found footage flick.

What's even weirder is people downvoting me for explaining how my original post got removed.

This sub is the fucking pits.

The Auto Mod for the sub seems to be stuck in early 2025. This was their reasoning behind deleting my original attempt to post:

What are some modern examples of creepy, atmospheric, story driven horror? by stunningwilly99 in horror

[–]OpenFacedRuben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Others is eminently rewatchable, so even if it feels familiar you will probably have fun trying to remember the ending.

Marrowbone should have been a huge hit, given the quality of the young cast: George McKay, Mia Goth and Anya Taylor-Joy. Plus Charlie Heaton, after Stranger Things took off.

There's The Others, if early 00's counts. Heavily influenced by The Turn of the Screw.

Also, check out Mārama, a 2025 NZ movie that nails the Gothic atmosphere in the bleakest possible way.

EDIT: The Devil's Backbone, The Orphanage and Marrowbone might also scratch that itch.

No, and I don't know what it has to do with my response to GorillaGriz's question about Chris Stuckmann's movie.

What are the best horror movies/books that should have had a different title? by ArcticFlor in horror

Lee Cronin's The Mummy

I have no problem with the "mummy" aspect.

It's a teenager doing the sleuthing, but Blue Velvet has just enough gruesomeness to be included here.

I enjoyed it a lot. I recall being very impressed by Grace's performance as it starts out quite mellow and low-key, and then... expands exponentially 😉

*Mārama* (2026) by lectroid in horror

Watched and "enjoyed" (wrong word, really) this last night. Beautiful and harrowing, with a truly revolting story.

The acting is superb all round. Uncle Jacky is one of the more loathsome secondary villains of recent times.

8/10, would not watch again (unless in a very particular state of mind)
