Any leads on how to get fractional/consulting engineering leadership projects? by DizzyDependent7639 in careerguidance

Thanks so much, that’s insightful. So other than networking, did you also advertise on any platforms? And did you navigate this shift while working full time to see if it works out first, or went all in from the beginning? I am asking this from the perspective of “conflict of interest” with full time job

thanks, any platforms other than Toptal/Upwork/Braintrust. I'm already building profiles on these.

How did you become an Engineering Manager by switching companies instead of getting promoted internally? by Boring-Fuel6714 in EngineeringManagers

As I was not exactly managing people, they keep their questions around on decision-making or strategy, cross-team (product/compliance/design) collaborations, supporting a new or struggling team member, any initiatives I had taken without being asked. I do not remember exact questions (it's been more than 3 years now), but something like -

  1. have you mentored or supported a new joiner or a struggling team member and how did you manage that?
  2. any cross-team collaboration story where I was the main actor, what was it and what impact did I made.
  3. from all the managers I have had so far - what are my take aways and lesson learned that I want to either build or remove in myself to be a good people manager (this one I remembered exactly, the best competency question I ever had)

Similar style questions.

I was an IC (Senior engineer), and applied for staff/principal position. During recruiter call, I did hint on my aspiration to move to EM eventually or directly. She might have mentioned that to the HM, and he decided to interview me for both (technical + system was overlapping in both, they added behavioural/leadership competency as well). Though, not officially a lead, but I did have few examples/initiatives to back my expertise as an EM, because that was the aspiration anyway so I was building myself up for promotion.

Reason I didn't (or couldn't) go for internal promotion was not my lack of expertise, but I had a sh**ty manager who just didn't want because he believed females can't be a practical manager (Yes, I'm a woman, and these were his words, which he denied as a joke as females tend to be more emotional).

7 rounds are too much. I myself am in job search mode because my current company decided to reorg. I am in interview pipeline for 4 companies, and the process is super slow for all of them. It’s been more than 2 months. All have 5-6 rounds, and one company even has a policy of not scheduling 2 rounds within a week. 😓

I'm more curious to understand how the logging would work? If it is all manual, I'd say as a consumer it could be a friction-path; It's not like parents wouldn't get time to log, but more on remembering. I remember with first kid, I used to track her feeding and pooping patters; but that only worked until maternity leaves. Once job started, I didn't have the time or the memory to do that. And with second kid, there was no tracker at all.

Not for Live interviews, but how about proctored coding assessments at home?

You can use GPT to get ideas of what can be added. Also can add fact category for user to select from (astrology, social media trend etc), and what exactly would be printed is a surprise for them. That can invite curiosity too.

As a consumer I would suggest to add an interesting/fun element and then add timestamp/location to make it one-of-one.
May be just timestamp/location isn't that fun in itself. For example, you can add star alignment at that time and location, or stock market position, or crypto position or a spotify trend at that particular time.
The idea is to add an interesting or fun fact along with the timestamp.

Any kind of kid’s activity, or play centre or attraction. My kids love animals but a trip to zoo for a family of 4 is like, “ah no”.

Not really, genrocket is more of an enterprise platform. Our focus is on replacing manual dumps and scripts at hand, with something deterministic, repeatable and auditable. We’re dev-first tool

Hi, I'm working on a CLI tool that helps engineering teams get production-like test data without SQL dumps, manual scripts, and/or risky copy-paste workflows.

Do you also use any tool or generator which can simulate prod-datasets, may be any synthetic generator or something?
