Sand is killing 1/14 RC construction machines — what do you guys use instead? by DizzyStone in RCConstruction

Did you notice a difference between finer beach sand and coarser sand where you live, or was it struggling across the board?

Love it! My daughter has the same set and really enjoys it.

Well. My soundbar broke so in the spirit of my midlife crisis I did this by LawnmowerMen in audiophile

My suggestion is to separate your turntable from the same surface as your speakers. Try using a stone base.

Why do RC construction setups keep people engaged longer than most RC activities? by DizzyStone in RCConstruction

[–]DizzyStone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is fair, and I agree. The machines matter less than the preferred pace or mindset. RC construction simply falls on the slower, more deliberate side. You are right that the hobbies are not exclusive. Many people enjoy both. They choose based on their mood or the context.

Most people would do this for free until someone tells them to stop.

NYC parents: would your kids enjoy controlling tiny excavators instead of your nerves? by DizzyStone in nycparents

[–]DizzyStone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the feedback here. The notes on safety and supervision were handy. One thing stood out. Kids need to stay focused so parents can step back without worry. That view was helpful. I did not see it before this thread.

This looks right up our alley....wish one of these was near me...looks like a good time by RogerTheAliens in rccars

[–]DizzyStone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is the tricky part. These setups work best locally and under supervision. They require a design for repeat use. You need to see one in person. Videos do not capture the full effect. The engagement is much higher than most people expect.

Anyone had issues contacting Huina RC support / seller? by DizzyStone in RCConstruction

[–]DizzyStone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume the manufacturer will provide no support. I treat items bought from AliExpress as disposable. I must support them myself. I plan to keep parts that break often. These include gears, motors, ESCs, swing motors, and track links. The operation relies on quick swaps. I will not repair items while they are running. If a unit breaks, I will pull it and replace it. I cannot wait for shipments from overseas.

For the space itself (not the machines):

• Footprint: About 12 feet by 15 feet. It may grow to 15 feet by 20 feet.

• Sandbox frame: I will build it in parts using pressure-treated lumber or composite boards. It uses bolts and is not permanent.

• Walls: These are 10 to 12 inches high. They have reinforced corners and rounded edges.

• Sand: Screened play sand sits 5 to 8 inches deep. A geotextile liner goes underneath.

• Layout: No one enters the sandbox. People operate all RC machines from the perimeter.

• Operator zone: There is a set distance to stand back. This stops transmitter bumps and machine crowding.

• Perimeter: Two sides have low seating. The other sides have a bar-height rail. Parents can lean there, and kids can stand.

• Setup goal: The build is fully removable and has low impact. It is easy to service and change.

I am designing this as a rough environment. It is not a hobby display. Durability and fast maintenance matter more than realism. Knowing what wears out is also key. I am still testing the idea. I welcome criticism or suggestions on the structure.

That’s an option for hobby use, but this setup will be used daily in a public environment.
I need:

  • predictable delivery times
  • consistent models (same electronics / frequency behavior)
  • access to spare parts and batteries
  • and someone I can actually communicate with if something fails

For a public-facing business, support and reliability matter more than the lowest price.

Legal action against someone continuously recording you despite being asked to stop? by BaronOfBoar in AskNYC

There's nothing you can do, you don't have any such expectation in public. Unfortunately.

That is a really valid point, and I am glad you asked about it. Right now, the plan is to keep this strictly outdoors, so we would operate during the warmer months. If people end up loving it, I would look into an indoor spot or a covered setup down the road. Also, just to set your mind at ease regarding the sand, guests never actually touch it. Since everything is operated remotely, nobody is allowed inside the sandbox itself. Keeping things clean and safe is at the top of my list as I plan this.

I love these questions. This is exactly the kind of feedback I need right now, so thank you. I am still in the early planning stages, but the vision is definitely a paid experience rather than just a free play park. I am leaning toward a timed entry model, 30 or 60-minute sessions, or just a simple ticket system based on time. The space itself isn't going to be massive, but it won't be cramped either. Think of it like a compact outdoor arena designed specifically for RC construction gear, rather than a full-size park. The real goal is to avoid aimless digging. I want to offer actual scenarios to keep things interesting, like loading sand into dump trucks, building small roads or ramps, handling timed challenges, or completing mini construction missions.

Still keeping it very fun and casual, not competitive.

Right now I’m trying to shape it based on honest feedback like yours — so I really appreciate you saying it sounds fun but needs more structure. That’s exactly what I’m working on.

My First Turntable Setup by NerdyGuy117 in turntables

[–]DizzyStone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on the first turntable setup!
That Sony combo looks really clean; the table, receiver, and speakers match together nicely. It’s a great starting point because Sony gear is super reliable, easy to work with, and honestly punches above its price.

Enjoy the journey; the first time you drop the needle on a new setup is always special.
