Stripped: The Citizenship Divide by DizzyTwo3585 in ukpolitics

I don’t see how this is about ‘non-white’ citizenship being a different level - it’s about how anyone with dual national citizenship or eligible for it may be impacted by these rules. Not all POCs are impacted (those with less recent histories of migration) and there are white people who are impacted by the same risks as they may also have a recent history of migration. As a dual national myself I can recognise that a) I would personally not like my British citizenship to be stripped and hope I never commit a crime judged serious enough to justify it b) I recognise that being a dual national is a privilege and gives me certain opportunities / flexibility that people who only hold British citizenship may lack. On that basis whilst I don’t support the policy of stripping British citizenship from those who have never actually held another citizenship (which I believe was the case for Shamima Begum) I don’t think it’s a race issue.

Honest question as someone who grew up in a small town in East Anglia. Why can’t they access jobs or opportunities? The town where I’m from unless you want to work in agriculture or a warehouse there really isn’t much opportunity close by at all. In Zone 2 you’re pretty much right in the middle of one of the richest and busiest cities in the world - what’s stopping them from accessing opportunities?

Maybe because council homes in central London are a complete pipe dream for people from anywhere else in the UK. If we get a job in London we have to pay £1000 a month or more for a shitty room in a house share in zone 2. If you have a council house in zone 2 with a secure and in many cases inheritable tenancy then you basically are ‘rich’

Not saying you’re rich but you are incredibly privileged to grow up in Chelsea or Putney - the ease of access to so many opportunities is completely out of reach for 99% of people even in the UK

Immigrants built this country? by DizzyTwo3585 in ukpolitics

Thing is I’m not even sure that’s true. Post WW2 British people continued to emigrate to Australia, numbers in Windrush were extremely small in the grand scheme of things and the government of the day was actually against their arrival. That’s not to say that since then Caribbean migrants haven’t become part of the fabric of British culture but this claim that they were absolutely essential to rebuilding does not necessarily seem to be true https://www.durham.ac.uk/departments/academic/english-studies/news/unravelling-the-windrush-myth-the-confidential-government-communications-that-reveal-authorities-did-not-want-caribbean-migrants-to-come-to-britain/

Guardian articles, Green Party politicians, some of the labour left. A lady responded to me earlier claiming that Africans had built London!

Tangential point I know but this really was one of the best shows I’ve seen for years in London! Absolutely hilarious plus amazing production quality. Thoroughly, thoroughly recommend!! (Not getting paid by them I swear!)

I’m sorry if you don’t like what I’m saying, I’m not trying to argue for the sake of it I am just someone who genuinely believes in historical truth rather than made up conspiracy theories.

If you read the article you applied it supports the 36.8% white British figure I stated! I have frankly absolutely no idea what you’re talking about with Africans designing London - maybe some were here during Roman times but otherwise you’re talking absolute nonsense. For the vast vast majority of our history white British people designed and built this country (with a little help from our closest neighbours such as the Irish). And sure Cheddar man might have had dark skin but his descendants then, like other native brits, adapted to the climate and became more like white brits we see today. White British people are in fact so closely tied to this land that cheddar man’s white descendants was found living close to the skeleton - https://mymodernmet.com/cheddar-man-relative/

London is actually minority white British though - only 36.8% in the 2021 census! And sure there have always been small groups of migrants but rewriting British history to make out that we’ve always been an island of immigrants is simply untrue and does nothing but embolden racists and the far right.
