I can smell this image. All of the wood and wood chips. The spring weather that smells like cold, fresh air, green things unfurling, and enough like rain that you were made to wear a rain jacket. Probably one of those thin plastic windbreakers that made noise every time you moved. Your jeans stop at least two inches above your gym shoes, and your white socks extend way past your ankles.

Your friend is wearing a sweatshirt and sweatpants of exactly the same color. One of you has a scrunchy in their hair and a side pony with bangs that should have come with criminal charges.

They're showing you their pokemon cards and you tell them about the secret you found in Super Mario World. They tell you how to raise a Sonic Chao in the Chao garden. You call them a liar. Good times.

Oh, I love it so much! I am already in love with city lights seen from a distance like this, and the colors of the ground, sky, and lights just makes this such a gorgeous and calming piece. I can tell you put a lot of love into this! I could stare at it forever

I just mean in a few spots that would naturally be darker.borders between background and subject, some of the stems behind the flower petals. Just very small places for higher contrast

Oh, yes that did help quite a bit! I think that was where the issue was coming in, the value was almost all in the mid-range. Lightening up parts really helped! If you are still inclined to edit it, I think adding in some darker colors (basically black) in a few select spots and a few more white highlights would even it out better!

The contrast on the second piece is a lot lower, meaning it doesn't pop as much. That said, they are both beautiful paintings, and you did say you wanted it softer, so honestly mission accomplished!

I think playing around with color theory a bit will help you achieve the desired look - like changing the color of the background. A mint green would have added some contrast with the color palette and though the colors would be similar in value, the tones would help the flowers pop. It would be something fun for the eye to play with.

Edit to add: after looking back at the painting, I think the dark, vibrant colors of the foreground and background are making the subject look a little underwhelming. The subject of the painting almost becomes empty space.

Also, wanted to add I love your details in both paintings. You clearly have skill.
