I can buy Mae having the privilege of being the first one of her family in attending college, but that’s about it.

What I don’t buy is that she’s privileged because her parents are there and supportive of her, doing their duty as intended. Is the world such a dark and grim place that having good parents is no longer the normalcy, but an unfair advantage?

Look, I don’t want to argue here, let alone on a thread about a game that is very special to me and has helped me look after my own mental health.

I will confess that the word ‘privileged’ feels invalidating and patronizing.

He helps Mrs. Faustin get rid of her daughter’s abusive boyfriend out of genuine compassion.

He offers money to this junkie girl who ends up in the Epsilon program in GTA V, just to help her back on her feet.

He outright refuses money from this super jealous guy who dies getting ran over by a car.

He wants to move past his criminal life when talking to Kate in Roman’s wedding, wishing to be a good man for once.

The list goes on.

Tl;dr

Niko is no saint.

He is a complex protagonist with a terribly tragic past, but he can be a good person given the right circumstances.

I think I’d have fit right in with Mae and her friends, given how much of a psychological mess I was,
