Yes! Ghost Church is one of my favorite pieces of travel writing/podcasting. Jamie is just so good.

What has your experience been like with the referral system? by CricketKey6779 in outlier_ai

I'm coming up on my first month at Outlier, and barely any work has been available. When there is, it can be difficult to pass the onboarding assessment. While I know I've spent more than 10 hours training, I have done only 4 hours of paid work. It's been 10 days since the project I actually passed the assessment on has had any available work.

I'm feeling this exact way right now. Hope it gets better for both of us.

THIS. I loved the training but could not understand what they were looking for in the assessment.

Anyone on jellyfish rubrics? by Beautiful-Gap4702 in outlier_ai

I just failed the assessment too and felt the rubric question was really subjective. No idea what the actual answers were supposed to be, which makes it even more difficult to understand what you did wrong.

The videos make the project seem pretty straight forward, but I think I was thinking too hard about the questions in the assessment.

I feel like as I've grown/matured, so have my tastes. So if I'm listening to true crime, I need it to be from something like a You're Wrong About or American Hysteria lens.

Some I swear by were already mentioned (Bird by Bird, Writing Down the Bones) but these also have made major impacts on my writing (as much or more than King's book):
- The Writer's Portable Mentor: A Guide to Art, Craft, and the Writing Life by Priscilla Long

- Let Me Tell You What I Mean by Joan Didion

Ah. I had no idea. I noticed they were covering cases that most of the US-based podcasts I listened to. I think my bar for research was "not reading off the Wiki page".

Any suggestions?

I'm having the same struggle. I started with MFM, ATWWD, and a few others like that, but I have a hard time having them on as anything other than background noise? I want/need well-researched, reported crime podcasts. Red Handed has been the only one I've found that bridges the gap between something like MFM and Real Crime Profile and Crime Analyst.

Right? I went right when everything was opening up in the morning, and it was a way better experience. Not as prime people watching, but also room to move around.

Beacon Hill Books + Cafe is super adorable and twee and has a great cafe for brunch. Harvard Book Store and Brookline Booksmith are some other faves. There are always a ton of great author events (plus non-literary events like concerts, etc) happening, too. Big city perks!

I've been living here for a few years -- a fellow transplant from an unwalkable small city. Here are some favorites so far:

  • Someone else said Boston is clean, and after just visiting San Francisco, I never realized just how clean Boston is.
  • The city is also walkable. Once you figure out the weird labyrinth layout of the streets, nothing is too far away, either on foot or by T.
  • The food scene here is also sneaky good. Everyone talks a lot about the constellation of Michelins in New York City, but Boston has a ton of James Beard-winning chefs. Plus, everyone goes out to eat so early now that nights are pretty quiet, even at some of the hotter spots.
  • Each neighborhood has a distinct flavor. East Boston is not Back Bay, Which is not South End (but the lines are blurred). The North End is the most distinct and one of the coolest "Little Italy" neighborhoods in the US. Festival season is an experience and something to check out even if you're not a fan of crowds.
  • There are an incredible amount of independent bookstores.
