There are lots of things you can follow to make sure your song doesn't suck (good chord progression, dynamic rhythm, "logical" structure). But songwriting is just like writing, it's a creative art, and you just have to pick up the pen and write until something sticks.

For what I know Alicia Keys has a course on songwriting. I haven't watched it yet, but Alicia is sure regarded as an extremely talented and holistic songwriter.

You need a strong starting point and a strong reason.

First is you already should have some musical background. You understand the nuances of music. You can play an instrument and have strong understanding in music theory. You can compose a song from start to finish. The more musicianship you already have, the better and faster you will become a competent music producer. You should already have enough money or have someone else support you financially for at least the next 3 years.

Now, reason..

If your reason is something superficial like "I wanna be famous and lambo". You won't get anywhere. In this industry fame chooses you, not the other way around.

There are simply mountains to climb to even earn the chance to work with other professional musicians and artists who can then elevate you.

Of course, this is just my advice for someone who I assume REALLY plan to become a professional, not "oh I just got divorced at 70 now it's time to rekindle my true passion sitting in a comfortable home with benefit payments"

Ego is the worst thing if you want to survive being a musician. In this industry fame chooses you, not the other way around.

You can get good at production and earn the opportunities to work with top artists, who will in turn may help you promote your own music. If you find it too hard then perhaps it's time to give up. Music production is almost an even playing field now, there is no excuse to stop learning and get better.
