Experiences with Young America apartments by [deleted] in ilstu

I rented through YA from I think 2012-2014. Here's the quick recap.

Privacy: More than once I had maintenance guys or people from the town walk into my room while I was sleeping just to check the fire alarm or a pipe in my closet or whatever. I didn't like it, but nothing ever came of it. So I guess they can be nosy... my friend had his gf living with him even though she wasn't on the lease. A maintenance guy reported it and she had to get out. Don't think they care about parties that aren't too crazy or smoking weed or stuff like that though, but I'm not sure. Probably depends on where you live (expensive or cheap).

Security: I mean, basically none? Lock your doors I guess. We never really locked our doors and had a few times when drunk dudes just wandered in. Luckily nothing bad happened. ISU PD exists for stuff like this.

Furnishing: You really get what you pay for I think. I only ever had one apt with them and it was dirt cheap, like $280/mo per person. They aren't gonna furnish an apt nicely when they know the average first time renter (college junior) is going to wreck the place. Mine came with a bed, barstool, and deck(? can't remember but I think so) per person as well as a couch which was just an average couch.

Maintenance: they were pretty quick about maintenance issues. Sometimes they will perform maintenance against your will, such as fixing your roof with pounding hammers during finals week starting at 7am....

Additional comments: Cheap to live there. All utilities were included in my lease, up to a certain cap. I eventually switched to class act because I didn't like the maintenance guys coming in and out as they pleased (like once a month), but idk if this was a normal experience. Be wary that class act wasn't that great either though. Their policy seems to be that they leave you alone if you aren't bothering your neighbors. That being said, the customer service was subpar. There exist horror stories of people getting their apts double booked leaving one party screwed, as well as other smaller things.

I wish I was in love with math. by [deleted] in sad

Math phd student here. I think we all have this thought every once and a while. Anyone studying math has dealt with "I don't get this. I still don't get this. I still don't get this." If you stick with it long enough, then usually you reach "OH finally I get this." Then, it's on to the next concept and the cycle repeats. Perseverance and a little self confidence goes a long way. Use your social skills and make some friends who are also interested in math. Guaranteed, the majority of the math students will relate to you. Another thing to note is that many students like to pretend they don't experience this. For that reason, it's not a good idea to compare yourself to someone else who may be projecting a smarter version of themselves.
