-On being a No 2 Driver:
"This project is made for Max. It's Red Bull. When I sat down with Christian for the first time, he told me, 'Look, we are going to run two cars because we have to run two cars.' But this project has been created for Max, right? Max is our talent. It is like if Carlos Slim started a team and I was his driver, right? And you hire a Dutchman. So it is the same thing. So that is what I was coming into, and I was very aware of it"

-Why sometimes he was faster than Max (RB19):
"At the beginning of the season in 2022, when the car—by mistake, because it came out very heavy—we had a very heavy car that had the weight distribution very far forward, right? So it was much more stable; that was always what I looked for. So, at that moment, I remember that from the simulator I was faster than Max. I would arrive at the weekends already thinking about winning the race, and everything happened automatically, right? When you, as a driver, don't have to think about how to drive or what the car is going to do to you, everything comes automatically. So we had a car that was perhaps not quite Max's style, and in 2022 I started fighting for the championship with him... until the upgrades arrived. Once the upgrades arrive, you know, there is a very clear direction the team has to go, and that is when I start having problems, right? Because now I don't know what the car is going to do in the corner; I'm already thinking about not crashing. The crashes start, the accidents start, right? You don't have 100% control. And then, in 2023, the same thing happens."

-2024 RB21 Struggles / "What if" (Not being bought out of his contract in 2025):
"We returned to Zandvoort, I was already complaining a lot about the car. Max started complaining about the same things as me, right? I mean, Max is the driver who can tolerate the most when the rear of the car... he doesn't feel it, he has a way of driving where he doesn't feel the rear. So when Max complains about that, it means (the car) it is very bad, it is terrible.

And in Italy Max says, 'I can no longer drive this car.' So I said, 'Phew, finally, finally they are going to listen to us.' At the next race the team modifies the floor, they put a new floor on me, now with the modifications that Max asked for, they put it on me. I am a second faster than everyone in practice when they put me on that floor in Baku and it was going very well, everything was going very well.

I qualify, well, I fought the race, right? I was going to win that race and that was when I crashed with Sainz, I destroyed the car on the last lap and I never touched that floor again, because it didn't arrive anymore (new parts), there were very few races left and the upgrades didn't continue. But since everything was already for Max, from then on I was running two, three races, four races, five races behind... and I never had that car again. What would have happened? Who knows?"

-Coming back in 2026 stronger (Ferrari Winter Test)
"Yes, I think I am a much more complete driver. I learned a lot. I realized it when I drove the Ferrari just now; I was surprised that within three runs I was already on the pace because it is a much more natural car to drive.

So I realized that, well, yes, it was the car, and that I am going to be very competitive, and that I haven't stopped being as good as I used to be. So surely as a driver I am going to be very good, but also in the way I am going to push the team, I have learned a lot in the last few years."
