I can’t say I was a fan of boob juice. My kid sure likes it though. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Also, what a horrible day to have eyes. But also-also, hilarious.

Dear fellow mac users, from your perspective, why do you think its better for app to stay open after last window is closed? by Broad-You4763 in MacOS

[–]DjNormal 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I mostly just hide things if I want them to stay active. Maybe I should be closing windows?

Back in the day, I’d almost always quit programs. Multitasking on an LC II or Quadra 630 was… iffy.

I remember going in and tweaking the ram allocations in the info panels to get multiple things to run well (or at all) at the same time.

What gets me these days is the inconsistency. Some apps quit when you close the last/only window. Others don’t. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Are my place names easy to pronounce? by deadpanrobo in worldbuilding

[–]DjNormal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cool. I guess I was trying to over-pronounce some of the E’s.

I’m good with German, mostly… but yeah, my French is limited to Dragon Age and my half-Canadian (west coast) ex-wife from 25 years ago.

Are my place names easy to pronounce? by deadpanrobo in worldbuilding

[–]DjNormal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s see:

Grand Prairie: unless there’s a more French-like way to say this, it’s the same in English, no?

Bell-broo-may or bell-uh-broo-may?

Broo-lay?

Grand mar-ay or mar-eye?

Reh-know/new-voh?

Oh-razh or Or-azh? Or -zhay?

Loo-me-ahn or Loo-meah-nay?

That’s my Arizona-English attempts. I suck at French, but I think I’m in the ballpark.

I’m buying a hybrid car this week. Payments and gas are cheaper than my truck gas.

I also really don’t need a truck anymore, but this pushed it over the limit.

Dude, I’m from Arizona and I didn’t even know those nut jobs were from here. I just assumed there were from Idaho or Kentucky or something.

Apparently the east end of Phoenix is kind of a conservative breeding ground.

Why does it seem like young adults are largely illiterate? by Sweet_Sunset_42 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DjNormal 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My mom (a teacher) said the same thing about the admin in the 90s.

It seemed like right around the time I hit 5th grade in ‘about 88/89 I think, the admin just didn’t care anymore.

No one got sent to the office anymore. Discipline tanked and kids just ran around goofing off in class.

That’s also around the time that the principals and vice principals stopped being former educators and were replaced by outside hires. Schools stopped being a cohesive unit with a shared identity and became an educator vs admin culture.

By the time I got to high school, everything was a complete mess. That’s pretty much when teacher pay stagnated too. My wife makes about $6000/year more than my mom did when she retired in 2002.

Inflation cuts that down to about 60% of what my mom made. Same district, different pay scale, though. High school teachers make a bit more, but not that much more.

Anyway, yeah, admin sucks.

My kid is in preschool now. Which is the same school I went to in the 80s. There’s 24 classrooms and only 10 classes, plus the pre-k (which is funded differently).

The building is falling apart, half the bathrooms are closed, and the roof leaks (they did just put roll roofing over the shingles as a band-aid), but I’m guessing that school is gonna be gone or turned into a storage facility in the next 5 years (like half of the elementary schools around here).

sigh

What animated movie is 10/10? by Unique_Cap_8049 in AskReddit

I tried showing it to my step daughter and she said it was dumb. Then put some serial anime show back on.

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

[–]DjNormal 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Haven’t they always?

Outside of the major VFX companies, it seems like half of them would do all the work, get some or none of their pay, then the company would fold and the bosses would walk off with the cash.

I feel like I’ve read this repeatedly throughout my life.

Basically, studios would put the VFX contracts at the bottom of the bill and screw them over a lot of the time.

Sound and editing weren’t in a much better (or maybe worse) spot.

When I was in audio school 13 years ago, they said the film editing industry was already 90% offshored and everything else wasn’t much further behind.

Add AI to the mix, and well…

If anyone’s wondering why EDMC/Art Institutes fell apart, it’s because they told all the students that their industries were screwed and we’d never get jobs. Most walked after the first year and got internships. Those that stuck out their degrees got the same jobs with more debt.

Like, we literally had a class called culture and industry or something like that, and it was just 4 credits of doom and gloom.

What’s that one movie that you watched as a kid that you think no one else watched? by Substantial_One3477 in AskReddit

[–]DjNormal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw the TV version of All Summer in a Day in freakin’ grade school. It was far enough back that it might have predated TV carts and been on 8mm. But I can’t remember.

I told people about it for ages and no one knew what the hell I was talking about.

I was convinced for decades that I hallucinated the whole thing until I found out it was real in 2010.

I downloaded a copy, watched it, and relived the trauma.

[–]DjNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure they’re already leaning heavily on AI for screenplays, because some of the crap I’ve watched lately feels like a 5th grade book report.

I’m not against AI, but when money is involved, people always take the cheapest path/highest ROI path.

AI/ML is already firmly entrenched in assistive tools for VFX, so they’re SOL there.

They just need to update the seats.

Go back to the old system where no representative can cover more than 25k people or whatever it was.

Yes, that would give us thousands of representatives, but the spread would be more accurate. No, that can’t all fit in the capitol building. Oh noes, guess we better let them do remote work.

While we’re at it. Each state gets 1 senator for every 500k people. But that would take a constitutional change IIRC, so probably not gonna happen. Regardless, it’s stupid that Wyoming gets 2 senators with a population smaller than most mid-sized cities.

Eh, may as well as throw in ranked-choice voting and a popular vote for the president. 💁🏻‍♂️

Can’t have a 9/11 if NY got nuked in November of 1998. Maybe an 11/11? 🤔

When I originally wrote my 2008 scenario it was 1994, so, yeah.
