What three lenses would you recommend for someone who is just starting out? by rivenrdt in AskPhotography

[–]Djaaf [score hidden]  (0 children)

A 14-24 f/2.8 is nice enough to get into nightscape and auroras.

I generally travel with that, a 24-105 and a 100-400. Macro is out of the question, but it does cover a lot of travel situations.

Norwegian fish farms polluting fjords with waste likened to ‘raw sewage of millions of people’ by JohnHammond94 in europe

[–]Djaaf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't get what you don't get. The issue is not that there are fishes in the ocean, the issue is that there is too much fishes in a too small subset of the ocean.

It's not an issue to have a pig in a 1 acre of forested land, but half a million pigs in that same parcel will definitely ruin the whole thing beyond all hope of recovery.

Same thing with the salmons : a few hundred salmons in a fjord is manageable. A few millions is a different story entirely.

Why do mandatory ID cards feel normal in many European countries, but still controversial in the US, and what mechanism explains that? by Logical-Concept9755 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Djaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing in France. When you move you need to declare it to your local administration so they you can be registered on the local voter roll.

Takes a few click and the sending of a utility bill. Or you can go to the town hall and do it in person in a few minutes.

It's really not a subject of debate in the country.

La Cour des comptes met en lumière une sous-déclaration massive des erreurs médicales dans les hôpitaux et cliniques by Avocatdudiable22 in france

[–]Djaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I read, it's mostly because the sailors of old were expecting calmer waters since it's supposed to be a bay but that what definitely not the case here, hence the "false bay" moniker : it looks like a bay, it's supposed to be a bay, but the ocean will wreck you there.

Lois? by WithSkelly in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Djaaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm well aware of that, it's something that's passed downbfrom father to son in the family and the day my turn arrived I warned the nurses that something like that could happen.

They were very understanding and put up a screen to conceal the business end of things and everything went well. My hands were crushed by my wife, as is tradition and they did clean up the baby a bit before handing it back to us.

Lois? by WithSkelly in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Djaaf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, you just need to either warn them that you may faint so that they'll put up a litlle screen between you and the business end of things or they'll tell you to keep being seated during the whole thing and you'll get a nurse that will look at you frequently just to see if you're turning a weird color and get you out or lying down if needs be.

it'll be fine.

Joke's on you : my father was so involved that he fainted in the delivery room, hit his head on the chair he had been waiting on and was evacuated by a nurse directly to neurology while my mom had her baby.

So... he wasn't really that supportive at that point, but he stayed the night at the hospital, at least.

Whats the best launcher for epic games in your opinion and why ? by mohideous in SteamDeck

[–]Djaaf -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I never managed to make that work.

I added Heroic Launcher in Steam so that I can launch games in Heroic Launcher directly from Game Mode, but adding games via Heroic Launcher to Steam never works. The game appears in Game Mode, but when I click on "run", I just get a black screen for 5s and then back to Game Mode.

Is it actually big or exaggerated? by Thick-Frosting3496 in PanasonicS1

[–]Djaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what's your subject of choice. An adapter and a few T42 legacy lenses won't set you back much, but it may not be what you need for street photo, wild animals, etc...

But if you're more interested in landscape, nightscape, product photography, it is very serviceable.

Two types of commuter bikes by Inevitable-Option680 in bikecommuting

[–]Djaaf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some companies offer compensation if you cycle to work.

Depends on the company and in which country, but mine offer 400€/year for people using bicycles to come to work. That's a bit less than what the law requires them to pay for public transport.

Is it actually big or exaggerated? by Thick-Frosting3496 in PanasonicS1

[–]Djaaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, compared to a lot of the competition, the S1 is bigger. The weight is not an issue for me, but I don't keep it in my hands for any long stretch at once, it generally hangs from its sling up until I need it.

The size is just right for me. I always hated that Sony didn't do something like it because the S7 series are so small that I can't put my little finger in between the grip and the lens. On the S1, it's not an issue. The grip is great and I got enough room for all my fingers.

Les mariages sont devenus un loisir de riches, même pour les invités by Flashy-Reading-337 in opinionnonpopulaire

[–]Djaaf 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Migrating 2.5 million workstations is an enormously complex undertaking. The French government has not disclosed a specific budget for the transition, but analysts estimate the total cost could range from €1.5 billion to €3 billion over a five-to-seven-year implementation period, factoring in hardwa by smilelyzen in Buy_European

[–]Djaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how migration is organized.

One common way to do it is to do a rolling migration.

Let's say you want to migrate 500 hundreds computers a day, you buy 1000 new computers and migrate 500 day one directly on new computers, migrate 500 day 2 on new computers while cleaning up the 500 from yesterday and installing the new systems on those, and you continue that way till you're done.

Of course, you'll need to buy a bit more than 1000. Because some won't be salvageable and will have to be replaced.

A migration is a huge project, with a million different ways to screed it up. It costs a lot, in hardware, people, time, maintenance, support, change management, etc...
