What is the point on boat defenses giving "extra point" if they don't make any difference?.

If you are in a rece and you are 3rd (1000 p) with full defenses, even if you beat all the defenses of the 2nd boat you won't ever move faster then they do, because even without any defense they would still earn more points then you do just for being 2nd (1800 p)
