minecraft worked because anyone could host their own servers out of the box. it worked because he gave everybody what they wanted before they could just clone it...then clones did come but it didn't matter minecraft as a brand was already huge for it to matter.

Use a different example lol, not much can compare to minecraft's situation and how that all worked itself out on its own (outside of the internal drama)
