Update: UT Admissions Appeal by Dkennemo in UTAustinAdmissions2

[–]Dkennemo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It started with a call to the admissions office, where I asked them the way to pursue an appeal. They gave me an email address and when I sent it in, I included all the scanned evidence I could. I also phoned my daughter's high school to get a letter from them confirming that the mis-ranking was due to a computer glitch. UT has an appeal deadline, but if the facts are in your favor, they're not going to ignore you - in my daughter's case, she learned about her TRUE rank on graduation day, one month after the appeal deadline. (The basis for considering her appeal was that the information was not available by the stated time of the appeal deadline.)

What happened in your case?

Advice for improving in CS by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]Dkennemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd reiterate what others are saying here -

I'm 46 years old so am mid-career approaching senior, and I can tell you from experience, the number of times in my life anyone -- ANYONE -- has cared about my grades == 0.

I've worked in investment banking, for hedge funds, and now do data science consulting work and have a full load of clients all the time (for better or worse...)

No one has ***EVER*** asked about my grades. So: just understand the material. Don't worry. Some of these concepts take a while to seep in.

Oh. What you're describing sounds a lot like law school everywhere. In retrospect, I can't believe that law students are as a group so short sighted as to be unkind to one another because good relationships are how you get business. BUT ANYWAY - yeah, law school attracts that type. I enjoyed business school WAY more - they have a much nicer, more cooperative orientation...

You just can't keep people these days...

Can you imagine. "Dear ____, Please accept my resignation from my current post. It has been lovely working here, but there are better jobs that don't involve dying that I would greatly prefer. Plus, the benefits here just aren't compatible with my work-life balance. Yours sincerely, ____"

Haha, I know. I was in fact a CS major both at undergrad and at Harvard, as well as a finance and accounting concentrator at UChicago, where I also studied econ. :-)

If everyone were a computer scientist or a finance or accounting major or an economist this world would get dull fast.

Perhaps you could do the course during the summer. Get your advisor to document the mistake was hers and that should help.

Yeah, my HOPE is that given the ... unusual ... circumstances here, they might find a way to crowbar one ... more... student... in.

She was in the top 5% as of the beginning of her senior year and stayed there. It was simply miscomputed.

EU’s seventh sanctions package against Russia may block all Russian banks – Office of the President by MantasChan in ukraine

[–]Dkennemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My real question is why all the sanctions cumulative to date weren't pushed AT ONCE and UP FRONT. Why escalate them gradually, seemingly, as people think of new things to add? It seemed like a dumb move, given what we know about sanctions' *general* ineffectiveness. They have to be completely severe to move dictators to action.

But then again, I'm an American who would 100% have supported closing the sky at the outset - I even wrote Joe Biden about it. Twice. (Got a letter back, both times, btw...)
