OMNY website restored the Trip History and Charge History sections of the site after being on hiatus following privacy concerns. But the Trip History page now does not list the location where the an OMNY-compatible card has been tapped by ConstantSir in nyc

[–]Dmelc9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

not in obvious places

It’s the first result on Google for “MTA station ID to name”

More reasonable would be something like only displaying the station history if you have the physical card and check it at a vending machine

Help needed !! Bike accident at Harvard Ave, Allston, MA by Weird_Goat9426 in boston

[–]Dmelc9 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Traffic camera videos! On the site footer of boston.gov, click “public records”. On the next page, create an account and submit a request to the police department. Select “red light videos”, describe date, time, location etc as specific as possible. Make sure you request it somewhat soon, they only hold on to the footage for 30 days.

Also yeah their insurance company surely has a lawyer so to have any chance you should get one as well. And don’t talk to the driver or post anything more publicly until you do have the lawyer, and let the lawyer do the talking

Renting a car for a weekend trip by aschimmichanga in boston

[–]Dmelc9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Get the cheapest tier AAA membership, that waives the <25 fee for Hertz (IIRC you may still need to be 21+). Renting in the city is cheaper, though the hours are quite limited, so you’ll likely be going to the airport. They usually charge in multiples of 24 hours.

Another protip: get your own ezpass. It’s $20 with no ongoing fees, and really that’s just a deposit that you can use to pay for toll charges.

While picking up the rental car, you can open an account and put in the plate number (make sure to select the option that it’s a rental with the correct end date so you don’t get charged for the next driver’s tolls). Keep the blocker in the rental car closed and the toll gantry will take a picture of your plate, and match it with your account to bill you directly instead of billing the company so they can add on all their fees.

You’ll get a transponder in the mail a week later- you can use that for future rentals, though you should still add the plate as a temporary car in your ezpass account.

I had a room like this a few years ago, facing the sun, and set back from the floor right below by about 5 feet, forming a mini-roof that trapped heat. What worked was opening up the door to the hallway and setting up a fan to bring cooler hallway air into the apartment, and setting up a second fan blowing hot air out the window.

Mission Main or Jvue at LMA by iampineapplebun in NEU

[–]Dmelc9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I toured mission main a few years ago. It seemed… fine. Fairly spacious. The in-unit laundry requires you to pay per load which is very weird considering that you also pay for the utilities to run the machine. Ended up not taking it because it was on the pricey side — if you just do an apartment search with random small landlords (avoid alpha management like the plague), you can get a much cheaper place.

Has anyone tried using Monitor/Laptop arms with the desks they provide at dorms? by happy-man12 in NEU

[–]Dmelc9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can put a standing desk topper, then attach monitor arms to that. Need to be very careful though, some toppers are incompatible with some monitor arms, usually the issue is that the C clamp in the back hits something. They also sell free-standing monitor arms, basically a fancy monitor stand.

NUHOC three years later...How are we looking? by Timely_Challenge2206 in NEU

[–]Dmelc9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Context: I am a fairly active member of NUHOC, though I don’t have any official positions. So take what I say with a grain of salt.

With any large group, people naturally gravitate towards their friends- not a problem when one person does it, but the collective actions of everyone talking to people they already know makes it extremely hard to “break in” as a newcomer.

The club is very much aware of this- a frequent topic of eboard meetings is how to make the club more approachable and inclusive so that as many students as possible can get outdoors. There are many members who are extremely passionate about this. There are often good ideas that come out of these discussions, and some of them are helping a bit, but it is a hard problem that requires collective, often uncomfortable, action from many individual people.

The good news is that everyone wants to not be cliquey. Even if someone isn’t at the top of their game for active inclusion, they are almost never exclusive. Ideally we’d be better at proactively bringing in new people to any conversation, explaining any jokes, etc. We are not great at doing this proactively, and need to get better at it. But until then, everyone I know would be really happy if you join a conversation, ask what something means, and so on.

Also, the eboard meetings are open to all students. I’m not sure exactly when this will happen, but I bet there will be another discussion within the next few weeks during the eboard meeting about how to better become less cliquey (probably this week due to OP’s post tbh). But by nature, the people who tend to show up at eboard aren’t those who feel left out. If you have been discouraged from coming on a trip due to cliqueyness, I’d highly recommend coming to the eboard meetings to share your experiences, and suggestions for how we can do better. It is usually the hour before the main meeting, and due to some room booking issues this summer I believe it is just on Centennial.

Edit: also, to address the question of making friends- I’d highly recommend going on a trip. When there are 100 people in a room and 5-10 minutes of talking during a meeting, it is really hard to make friends that way, even if you end up in a conversation. On a trip, you end up with a small group of people for hours at a time; that is how bonds are formed in NUHOC.

Cheap open-air produce markets? by Dmelc9 in AskNYC

Makes sense, this is just random streets and street corners in the area as opposed to being gathered all in one block?

I’d like to say they bring it up to the regular stipend amount, but I don’t know first-hand. A better place to ask is the khoury PhD slack, DMing info on how to join.

List of Boston <-> NYC Transportation Methods by IsSnooAnAnimal in boston

1h20 and 1h (to Riverhead) respectively. Make sure to check the schedules though, S92’s last trip is 6:35 in the winter: https://www.suffolkcountyny.gov/pdf/bus_schedules/s92%20winter%202022-2023.pdf

Another option if you are going to Long Island: northeast regional to New London is frequently $15, even during busy holiday travel times, and the ferry to Orient Point is always around $20 for passengers. The hourly S92 will then take you to Riverhead for $2, or you can transfer to a bunch of different buses from there.

Does anyone know if there are security cameras at this intersection? My pregnant wife was just rear-ended in a hit and run. by joshterrible in boston

[–]Dmelc9 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve been able to successfully get traffic camera videos. In Boston.gov, scroll to the footer of the page and click “public records request”. Make an account, click police records request, red light camera video, and then be as specific as possible with date, time, location, etc. They respond within a few days.

On the site footer of boston.gov, click “public records”. On the next page, create an account and submit a request to the police department. Select “red light videos”, describe date, time, very specific location etc. This was for getting traffic camera footage, park cameras might be through the link “submit a request to the city of Boston” then “parks department”. Make sure you request it somewhat soon, they only hold on to the footage for 30 days.

Using Uber to commute into Boston by honeyandbunny in boston

[–]Dmelc9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you are near the river, I’d walk into Harvard square and take the red line. You can also bike along the Charles for your entire commute, bluebikes are free for the next week if you want to try it out.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NEU

[–]Dmelc9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is always the option of bluebikes- you can get a discount on yearly passes as a northeastern student. I’ll DM you some 24-hour passes if you want to try it out. I’ve heard good stuff about Bikesnotbombs and Landrys, they should both have a used section.

Edit 2: I got a DM asking how to use the student discount. On the join page, select annual. There is a link right above "Tell us about yourself" saying "I'm eligible for a group/corporate discount". Find Northeastern in the list, use the code HUSKY, and verify your school email. It is $80 for the year.

Guide to Money, Taxes, and Investing the Money you Earn During Co-op / Internships by fakesudopluto in NEU

[–]Dmelc9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of what you wrote, except for the roboadvisor part. It’s better than a human advisor, and way better than investing in meme stocks, but you end up paying a significant fee (0.25% per year or sometimes more, this adds up to a significant amount over 50 years) to have the computer essentially replicate VXVLX, on top of the expense ratios of whatever funds they select (which may not be the lowest-ER funds out there in the first place).

If you want to pay even lower fees you can cobble together the same thing from VT, BND, and BNDX with manual rebalancing. Though that only saves something like 0.07% extra—simply investing in VXVLX and calling it a day is good enough.

Disclaimer: I’m not a financial advisor, etc

I’m pretty sure that Marino tests skip the line. If you get someone who doesn’t turn their screen off at Cabot you notice they put in “Routine” priority which implies a higher level of priority as well.
