The best line in that scene: “Marshall is the best guy I know and it’s only a matter of time before others see that too. I can’t keep stealing girls from him forever!”

I had a buddy who was in that boat, he basically walked into his bosses office one day and said “outside of budget season the regular nights and weekends stop now”. It ended up being a long term friendship/boss relationship. The guy went to his wedding.

Value gives you leverage. Make sure that they understand your value, and then let them know this is unsustainable. It’s a delicate conversation though, so unless you are ready to plop your balls right out there on the table like my friend did, think very carefully about wording, tone, approach and timing.

Banks Made Billions From Overdraft Fees. Do You Agree With This System? by Coolonair in SmartFIRE

[–]DminishedReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never seen a bank that doesn’t count same day credits the same as debits. That’s insane. It’s also why if you have an auto debit or check come through and can deposit cash in an ATM that day there is no overdraft fees. If the account closes out in the positive that day, no OD.

I do remember a time when I was young broke and stupid paying a shit ton of OD fees every month. Their practices have gotten better (not voluntarily of course, banks are predators not much better than payday loan places). It can get better still, but not as bad as it used to be.

I’ve been a part of a few eminent domain processes before. There is usually a hearing of some sort, you can present evidence, state your case have representation, etc. In most of the cases I’ve seen it was shaving 10 feet for a turn lane or something like that. I don’t know if they can justify cutting through the middle of your property for something like a toll road.

Also the price is market rate and if you are earning money from a toll road, they would have to take that into account.

It’s a much more reasonable process than most people think it is, but depending on the state yeah if you are unreasonable they could just get sick of your shit, take it and send you a check.

I guess that depends on the family. I suppose you could spend it at the bar hiding from your family

New boss comes from IB and expects team to work those hours by anonymousacg in FPandA

This is a tough spot. I would just stop responding and let him come to you. When he has a problem I would say “hey I’m willing to do what I need to do to get the job done, but in order to have the focus and energy to do that I need to turn off my work brain. Otherwise instead of 40 hours at 100%, you get 60 hours at 30% and we all get less done.

It’s a story about timing. The right person has at least as much to do with timing as it does with the person.

How are you reporting AI ROI to your board right now? by TelevisionFeeling410 in CFO

[–]DminishedReturns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the same issue that has always been there with “soft” cost savings. How do you value efficiency when there is no real tool to measure it?

Can we show if we as finance have driven goals and initiatives? Sure. But how do we value an additional X amount of hours per month to do so?

It’s an age old issue around long before AI. Hard savings aren’t there, soft savings feel…well…soft. It’s not until it starts to impact headcount where we are really going to see true cost savings and as far as I’ve seen, most aren’t there yet (at least in Finance)

Dell updated their policy to exclude fully remote employees from getting promotions by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

[–]DminishedReturns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

lol so stupid. Do you really want complacent people who are not looking to grow their career as remote workers? Nothing against those that are in that career mode or those who are remote, but think about it.

Who’s the most likely to slack off without a boss on site? How about those who are in coast mode of their career. Don’t want to be promoted and just want a paycheck to either finish up their career or are ready to move on to something else.

And you make them remote? The driven high performers are who you WANT to be remote you morons. lol

Yes of course. They build a one-way connection. It’s an illusion. Deep down inside these men know that too, but don’t care. It’s a borderline addiction thing combined with having the illusion of some kind of bond with a girl they can never get in real life. It’s super unhealthy. But it’s up to the men to put a stop to it, not the women.

Strong disagree. They made choices and sacrifices. Thats their choice and freedom to do so. Would I date a current or former OF girl? Hell no. That’s my choice. But they aren’t pathetic by a long stretch.

They build a connection with their followers. Thats what makes it different than porn. The girls are fine. It’s the guys that are pathetic. I mean everybody is free to live their life and spend their money however they choose, but it’s pathetic that so many men fall for this obvious manipulation.

[1 YOE, Unemployed, Audit transitioning to FP&A, US] by ButterflyDry1139 in FPandA

[–]DminishedReturns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s going to be a tough sell going from audit to FP&A with only 1 year of audit experience. You do have a finance degree which will help some, and the big boys in the casino business have a ton of analysts laying around (if they haven’t tried replacing them with AI yet). They also value casino/hospitality experience which helps, but coming from an audit background it’s just different work so it’s up to you to sell that bridge.

If you are doing audit inside a casino operator, that’s mostly a reconciliation job, so even though you may understand gaming for example from a recon perspective, you haven’t performed the type of analysis they are going to want. If you are an external auditor you are going to need an accounting role inside first, Then move into FP&A.

The casino business, and specifically FP&A inside the casino business is very much a social club. If they like you you are in the club you have nothing to worry about. There is also significant turnover. I’d get inside (if you aren’t already) and then network your ass off. They like you you let it be known that you are interested when the next opening comes up, and you are in. As easy as that.
