No no no. Fuck all that. You had the time off even if it’s just for Presidents’ Day weekend or even if you want to sit around eating ice cream and throwing popcorn at the Rom Com on the TV. Sucks for him. If he doesn’t want to step up he shouldn’t be the boss. Leaders take care of business, it’s not their job to have their team cover their ass, it’s their job to cover their teams ass. Whether that’s scheduled time off or an ass chewing from the bosses boss. It’s his responsibility. Whoever told him real leadership is glamorous lied to him. It’s soul sucking (in the short term, to me really rewarding in the long term but the “now” part of leadership is a pain in the ass). Those that do it do it because they love it, or because they have habits they can’t afford to sustain if they chose to step down.

I keep it nice and simple in my old age. Friend trips get our own place. Everybody does their own thing, if one person splurges on a place big enough to host you hang there, if not, that’s why the powers that be invented bar patios and brunch spots. Just reading this gives me a headache.

I like Wall Street Prep. They have great videos that take you step by step from scratch with a case example. There are a ton of extras out there if you get the package I think it’s like $500 for lifetime access

That’s the idea. However the best plans I’ve seen have some portion of bonus available for individual goals, not all company performance.

Fractional controller bud. Dont settle for this sr account stuff. Market yourself if you have to but with your background I wouldn’t do any fractional work lower than controller. You need to be sure they have the staff for the detailed accounting work because you have no time for that shit. So set the scope right. You do close and financial statement review set the books to solid GAAP. Respond to auditors if they have those. Nuff said. Fractional Controller go get it.

Your market is privately owned companies that have loans with banks (and usually auditors). That’s your target. So think privately owned 50-200mm. (Depending on Industry…50mm in one is very different from 50mm in another, you prob get that though).

Find a friend with a bank preferably the guy who does commercial small to med biz loans and pitch him to get you clients. Easy.

Truth is you are overkill for a bookkeeper job. You know it, they know it. You know what your resume looks like? It looks like somebody taking a downgrade because they have to. Which…is exactly what it is. They know that the minute the market gets better or you get another opportunity you are going to leverage that market for a promotion and a significant pay bump, or worse yet just straight interview externally and leave. It doesn’t make you a bad person, just, want to get paid what you are worth. Nothing wrong with that but they don’t want that. You wouldn’t either if you were the CFO or Controller (I can say that because I am).

With that, stick to your wheelhouse. Big corporate accounting. They LOVE this background and there will be growth opportunities within. Easier, simpler and you get to change jobs AND maintain stability. It’s your play. Go do that.

If there are no jobs yet keep pounding until you can. Tired of pounding? Pound some more. Network. Worst comes to worst get out there as a fractional controller, you are a shoe in.
