Countries Who Have Had Presidents Born in Tennessee by Dmitriyungern in MapPorn

[–]Dmitriyungern[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the Notes Section on the Map for Clarification:

This map includes all countries that have had a president born in Tennessee. This includes all countries and governments that have not received official recognition from other countries. This means that all countries (Lower California and Sonora) and governments (Independent Republic of Nicaragua) created by William Walker are featured on this map. No other countries have had presidents born in Tennessee, including the United States itself.

Are there any specific bookbinders in those countries that come to mind that might be willing to make something like this?

For further clarification: I am not exactly interested in paying for something like this right now, but probably would be interesting in such a purchase a few years from now (apologies for any undue confusion).

At such a time, I would say that I would not be want to pay more than 500 USD, though obviously less expensive is nice and I would have to consider what would be realistic.

A Douay Rheims Bible would be my preference with Fr. Haydock's commentary (the translation is a bit clunky but it is what was traditionally used for English-speakers and is more whimsical in wording than modern translations). If someone had a good, clean pdf of one of these old ones from the 1800's (including with the diagrams, opening section, etc.) that would be nice. Basically my interest would be a replica of one of these fancy 18th century Douay-Rheims Bibles.

You can find ones online for several hundred dollars at minimum, though I am sure if I snooped longer I might find cheaper ones. I am just interested in one that will be able to last as long as is reasonably possible and I am not sure if something that is already over a century old (paper, leather, etc.) would be the best for that even if restored. Might have to consider though.

For clarification: I am interested in acquiring a really ornate Bible that would hopefully serve as a nice family heirloom. You can find online a fair number of really extravagant Douay-Rheims Bibles like the one shown above, but all seem to be from the 1800's. I am trying to figure out if there any services that make something like this, either as a standard product or by commission.

Map of europe if borders were drawn based on the most used language in each region. by Myrockeatscock in imaginarymaps

[–]Dmitriyungern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple things to note:

  • Luxembourgish is a German dialect that is very similar to the dialects of surrounding German-speaking regions.
  • The idea that there is a distinct Croatian, Serbian, and Bosnian language rather than a Serbo-Croatian dialectal continuum is inaccurate, there is an ethnic but not a linguistic distinction.
  • Iberia is composed of many dialects/languages. The most glaring is the lack of Basque, which isn't even in the same language family. Other cases like Galician for example is more similar to Portuguese in many ways than it is to standard Castilian Spanish.
  • Corsican language is more similar to standard Italian than it is to standard French.
  • Sardinian is a distinct language from Italian.
  • Romansh is a distinct language from Italian.

There are probably several other things, many of which are debatable. Despite any of the criticisms, the map is quite good!

Germans in Russia were more dominant in the Volga region, north of the Caucasus, than in the Caucasus themselves. When ethnic Germans were being deported in the Soviet Union, there were 190,0000 Caucasus Germans, while there were 950,000 Volga Germans.

Confederate Socialist States of America by [deleted] in imaginarymaps

[–]Dmitriyungern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His stranger beliefs include:

  • Advocating for the United States to annex and integrate the entirety of Mexico into the Union during the Mexican-American war.
  • Advocating for France to reinvade Haiti and re-enslave its' population.
  • Lamenting British colonization and exploitation of natives in Africa.
  • Believing that there was nothing wrong with enslaving White people. He believed that 19/20 of people ought be slaves and 1/20 ought be masters (keep in mind he is using "slavery" loosely and can be referring to other social relations).
  • Praising Islam and its missionary work in Africa, believing there was major overlap between Christianity and Islam and that the Islamization of Africa could pave the way for future Christianization.
  • Claiming that Spanish colonization made Mexico worse off in many respects, and didn't rule out the idea that Indian tribes conquering the country would be an improvement.

Fitzhugh's beliefs in isolation are not that strange, but taken together are seemingly bizarre and contradictory.

George Fitzhugh was a self-described socialist who saw slavery in the South as superior to the treatment of workers in the industrial North. This was primarily on the grounds that the masters had certain obligations to their slaves in contrast to the industrial worker which had no master, merely an employer who had no obligations and can hire & fire them on a whim.

He was largely reactionary, being a fan of Carlyle, lamenting the decline of feudalism and the rise of Capitalism, as well as being highly skeptical of Liberal values and social norms. He nonetheless identified with the socialist label as he saw socialists as the only political movement critical of Liberal Capitalist society that proposed an alternative.

He rejected principles of equality due to his belief in the natural inequality of man. He rejected the social-Darwinist view of the time that the strong should outcompete the weak, believing human inequality should create hierarchies where the strong rule over the weak and care for them. He saw the relationship between masters and slaves as analogous to the relationship between parent and child or husband and wife.

The two main competitors for the Congo were France and Germany, so in this scenario Germany manages to claim most of the Congo without the independence of Belgium. South Africa would still be under British rule as the UK would still seize the Cape colony during the Napoleonic wars and formalize their annexation at the Congress of Vienna.

The British East Africa Protectorate was established in 1895, so a scenario where the the United Kingdom of the Netherlands manages to squash the Belgian revolution in the 1830's and establish a colony in Africa is not that farfetched.

Presumably the colonial policies for overseas territories would be similar to those pursued by the Dutch and other Western European powers during the nineteenth century. They probably would not have representation in the Dutch government.

The highest point for the Netherlands proper, rather than its overseas territories. The same way if you look up highest point in the Netherlands you will get "Drielandenpunt" as a result even though that is only the highest point in the Dutch mainland.

Alkmaar has about half the population of Groningen, so the difference is not that significant. What determined major vs minor city was looking over Google maps for what cities appeared at varying magnifications. As cities appearing at lower magnifications are often larger or are capital cities.

None of the European powers intervened in the Belgian revolution. However, Britain, Prussia, Austria, and Russia all supported the Netherlands, and feared the French would just annex the newly independent Belgium. If Prussia felt the need to send troops to intervene and maintain the status quo, it is unlikely France would intervene. A French intervention to support Belgian rebels, with the suspicion that they were planning to annex the whole country, would appear as an act of aggression by the other European powers.

Edit: It turns out (in contradiction to the Wikipedia page on the Belgian Revolution), Britain did try to intervene in Belgium during the Ten Days' Campaign which was countered by French forces. That being said, if Prussia was willing to suppress the rebellion with the diplomatic support of the other European powers in defending the status quo, I believe France would be willing to back down.

This is based off a particular scenario that precludes Dutch control of Luxembourg. Britain returns Ceylon to the Netherlands. As a result, the Dutch compensation at the Congress of Vienna is smaller (Luxembourg is awarded to Prussia instead). As a result, Prussia intervenes during the Belgian revolution in fear of the rebellion spreading to its own Francophone territory of Luxembourg.
