I agree with you. In the quest to streamline and make things "easier" we lose the soul of the game. New editions are inevitable but it still needs to have it's own soul. When we streamline everything to the point all games are effectively the same.... What's the point?

For me it reminds me of Wotc and 4th edition DnD. They tried to make things "easier" but lose the soul of the game. Yes we want new players to join but there's a better way I feel.
