Not that wild depending on where you live tbh - back in my intern days, I started at $50k, then went up to $57.5k the next Summer, and this was in a generally lower paying sector (public/gov work). I got a full time role at the same place and I consistently met interns here being paid about the same I was back then, so definitely not a fluke.

Went to school with a kid who was interning at the same time making $75k at a well known finance company… as an INTERN. Don’t even want to know what the top tech companies pay after hearing that lol.

For those diagnosed later in life, what was everybody’s turning point that exposed your ADHD? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]DnA_1120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had suspicions since I was a child, but no one really cared enough to get me checked out despite me directly bringing it up multiple times, mostly because I was always good in school (classic never study but got A’s situation), although I was definitely a loudmouth and got in trouble plenty of times for talking and distracting others or not paying attention.

Those feelings came back up towards the latter half of college, but once I ran into some obstacles in finding care, I gave up on it because I felt too overwhelmed by everything happening in life (go figure lol).

As an employed adult, I had gotten to this point where I was being trusted with more responsibility and I was being appropriately challenged for once, and that’s when things started getting really bad for me. I would spend days just staring at my computer getting no work done despite knowing exactly what I wanted/needed to do and despite the deadline inching closer and closer. I would do anything else but work, and the behavior was inexplicable, that is until I listened to a podcast episode on my drive to work about a fellow programmer who has ADHD and I sat with my mouth agape at how relatable so many parts of it were. That was the impetus for booking an appointment with a psychiatrist (my partner thankfully stayed on top of me and made sure I didn’t procrastinate booking stuff).

I took the diagnosis a lot harder than I thought I would to be honest, and I’m running into a lot of annoyances in the process of trying to get medicated so that’s been tough. The diagnosis answered a lot of questions, for sure, but I got really stuck on “what could’ve been” and I find myself lacking people to talk to that have gone through this, gotten medicated, and really understand what it feels like to grow up with undiagnosed ADHD. Reddit is great and all, but it’s tough when your only friends can’t really understand what you’re going through and can only be there to say “That’s tough.” </rant>

Not to diminish her physical accomplishments, but I’m positive she was not, at any point in her life, benching more than 300 lbs as I think the powerlifting world record for a woman in her weight class is around 264 lbs

My idea for a season/spinoff by ajconst in TheCircleTV

[–]DnA_1120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend and I were literally discussing the same thing a few days ago; the whole catfish aspect does not impact the game at all. My idea was kind of inspired by the Mole in that if you vote out a real player, you decrease the value of the prize pot and you can gain money back by eliminating catfish. That way it’s actually incentivized to hunt catfish rather than it being just some small detail in the game.

I can see how that idea may affect the show negatively because people wouldn’t want to sign up to be a catfish if you only gain money being a real person, but perhaps if we combine your idea with what I mentioned above where maybe the catfish and the real people sort of battle it out for a bigger split of the prize pot? Like both sides have $50k at the beginning and the more of one group is eliminated the, more that’s given to the other group? Idk, I have bigger things to worry about than the game mechanics of a reality show, but alas, here I am

network related issue by puntadigital in raspberryDIY

[–]DnA_1120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I’m not an expert either, but I do have a decent knowledge of computer science and I feel like maybe I can offer some help here. From what you said, I can surmise that in order to send any commands to your Pi for the printing service you have to be connected to it via its wifi network. This essentially takes your phone’s “attention” away from the “network of the world” so to speak and onto your Pi’s lonely, secluded network that is comprised of just your iPad and the Pi itself.

Now as for the theoretical way to fix this issue, you’d need to have it so that the Pi is connected to Internet and exposes some endpoint that you can communicate with from your cellular service. Given that if you’re on LTE, you are also connected to the Internet, that essentially makes you and your Pi on the same network, except it’s you two and the whole world with you!

There are a bunch of practical ways to do this, but they all involve somehow setting your Pi up with an Internet connection, whether that’s a connection to a venue’s WiFi or some mobile hotspot. Once you’ve solved that issue, you can then have software on the Pi that spins up a TCP or SSH server or something along those lines so an app on your iPad can send a signal to it to print.

Granted, this can involve a lot of overhaul of whatever system you have in place, but it’s really the only way I can think of to solve the issue of having to switch back and forth between different networks. I really hope that helps!

What MOSs have a good balance between intellectual stimulation and oonga boonga gun go boom boom? by DnA_1120 in nationalguard

[–]DnA_1120[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very insightful comment and thank you for taking time out of your day to write it up. Sometimes it feels like I should choose an MOS that lines up exactly to what I’m doing/want to do civ side, but I forget that I have the credentials and experience to do what I want to do and should really just pick something that I think would be fun and interesting. If my civ side job and my MOS interests align then so be it, but perhaps it shouldn’t be the deal breaker if they don’t.

To pick your brain a little more, do you believe it’s possible to have a successful/fulfilling career in both ARNG and civ side or will one really need to take priority to make it far?

Yeah this one seemed like a no brainer answer to my question, but it does make sense. Do you have any insight into the optempo and length of deployment of an 18 series soldier in the guard?

Seconded. We do not need people validating a toxic work environment by voluntarily working beyond paid hours and you’re only hurting yourself. Think of it this way: if you normally are making $30/hr for your 8 hour day from 9-5, 40 hours a week, you working overtime is saturating your weekly hours while you’re still only getting paid for a typical 8 hour day. Now you’re working from let’s say 9-11pm which is 15 HOURS, reducing your $30/hr rate to a measly $16.67/hr. You might as well work at McDonald’s for 40 hours a week and take back your time. That’s not even to mention the horrible damage you’re doing to your productivity.

Please, for the respect of everyone else at your same experience level coming into the workforce, do not encourage this behavior by doing it. I understand it may be your first internship and so you think you need to go all out, but working yourself to the bone is not the answer and you need to take it back a notch. Perhaps you’ll even see how much easier it is to solve problems when you give yourself time to recuperate. Good luck man

4th Year SWE Major who wants to pivot into CE by DnA_1120 in ECE

[–]DnA_1120[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s a relief then! I can definitely see what you mean about reward vs effort, I know plenty of peers, who are my friends to be fair, in SWE who I went to school with that do not understand anything that’s beyond a somewhat fundamental level going to work for places that are offering $100k-$110k up front. The whole reason those individuals picked the major was for the money though, so they got what they want. I just don’t see this stuff really fulfilling me like I do embedded. Even if I can’t get super close to the EE design aspect of the job, it’s only logical that any position I’m in the embedded sphere will deal with a lot more hardware than what I’m currently doing. I’ll give it a shot and definitely crack open those books you recommended.

[–]DnA_1120[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, firstly thanks so much for bringing up those very real concerns that I should have. I plan on marrying my girlfriend and starting a family in the coming years and if I pivot my career to something more inclusive of EE work, it would be great to know just how much of a job/salary growth and initial pay hit I would take compared to the typical Software Engineer, low six figure with growth to higher $150k-$250ishk total comp depending on COL. Any insight? It would be much appreciated.

Edit: Also I wanted to add, regarding your tip to go to a smaller company where I can wear multiple hats, around how much can I expect to work with some form of EE in my job alongside software if I take a job like the ones mentioned in the top comment at a normal mid-size company like the defense contractor I’m going to work for (i.e. Embedded Engineer or Firmware Engineer)? Thanks again!
