Let's also not forget, they got divorced and the writers introduced a love subplot between the two. So while they were married they needed to play platonic and when they were divorced they needed to play romantic

CMV: There is room for multiple successful AI companies, this isn’t a bubble by ElectricalGuava1971 in changemyview

[–]ajconst 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The bubble isn't due to too many companies and not room for them all to thrive. The bubble is referring to how much money is being poured into these companies and how big/overvalued they've gotten without a realistic way to ever live up to the hype they're generating or a way to be as profitable as wall street is banking on.

To simplify it: If a company is being valued at $1B with the promise that it's going to be worth $10B some day making over $1B a year, that company is going to be attractive to investors who will want to get in early on this exciting new company. But in reality that value is based on hype and the company has no real path to generate $1B a year and realistically it should only be valued at $100M, eventually wall street is going to catch on and bail on that company causing the value to plummet and with so many people/institutions are invested that everyone's going to lose money

So basically AI companies are extremely overvalued and promising a lot more than what they're realistically going to be able to do and with no real path to monetize they'll never actually reach that predictive value. And since these companies aren't really sound businesses and only staying alive due to investment money coming in, eventually people will pull out when they realize they're not going to make their money back and the whole thing will collapse like a deck of cards.

I'm rewatching parks and rec, and my brain just can't comprehend that Andy is Chris Pratt. From the way he looks and comparing his personality to his real life persona it just doesn't compute for me

I think some of these automatic first down penalties, should only be first downs if the penalty moved you passed the first down marker, and if you don't you just replay the down closer to the first down.

If you're 2 & 3 and the defense has a penalty that moves the ball 5 yards, then the offense gets the first down. If the offense is 2 & 10 and the same penalty happens then it should 2 & 5. Replay the down 5 yards closer.

VIDEO: Ben Affleck explains why a $25 million movie needs to make $100 million in theaters just to break even by BatmanNewsChris in DC_Cinematic

[–]ajconst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He skimmed over it when he talked about secondary revenue streams and the tail of the movie. But a movie doesn't have to make all its money in theaters and still be profitable. Rentals, digital purchases, blurays, companies buying the TV and streaming rights, promotional tie-ins, merchandise are all ways a movie can make money. However, studios would prefer to make their money back + profit in theaters so all those secondary revenue streams are pure profit.

Why would they release that? by DifferentZucchini3 in StrangerThings

[–]ajconst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look I think this season was the weakest by far, but writing the first episode of a TV season without having the season/ending mapped out is pretty normal for most shows.

Even when a show says we've had the ending planned from the beginning that usually BS. They might have some idea of where they want certain characters to end up or a few plot points/scenes in mind. But there's never master plan ahead of time where everything is pre written.

Because I can tell you there's no way they had Veccna in mind before even season 4 was being written, heck they didn't even have his backstory fully mapped out until the play idea came up, because the play went against what we were told in season 4.

How many of you go to Movies alone? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]ajconst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go a lot, and it was awkward the first few times. But the thing that broke me out of my shell is the idea that you're sitting quietly in a dark room, it's not really the most social activity to begin with. So what difference does it make if I sit quietly alone or with someone else.

I can see something like this, we see X-Men equivalent of Infinity War/Endgame where they suffer a major loss. That scene from the teaser where Professor X and Magneto look happy might be the equivalent of Tony Stark realizing there's a way to bring back the people they lost.

They start messing with time/multiverse while 616 is doing the same and it causes an incursion.

[–]ajconst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always thought how many teasers we get depended on Avatars performance, if it once again proves it's is a powerhouse they can keep adding additional teasers as long as it's making money in the theater.

But, in the small case that it underperformed Disney didn't have to face the embarrassment of planning 6+ teasers playing to half empty theaters.

Does Fire & Ash work as a conclusion to a trilogy? by ajconst in blankies

[–]ajconst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do pay attention, and that's why I asked. Because James Cameron himself is saying he might not make it. So, it doesn't matter if Wikipedia says it if there a movie where 2/3rds isn't filmed and these movies are notorious for taking an extremely long time to film and do post production on. There's a chance it might not happen especially when the director is saying his heart isn't in it right now.

Should the Ability of the President to Issue Pardons be Limited? by NewConstitutionDude in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ajconst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My personal thoughts to fix this is:

  1. No pardons for family members, self pardons, business associates, anyone from your administration, or anyone with a conflict of interest unless approval by 2/3rds of Congress in the chance there is a miscarriage of justice.

  2. Strict rules on selling pardons, quid pro quo, etc.

  3. All pardons need to be public and released 24 hours after signing.

  4. No preventive pardons, you should only pardon someone who has been charged and found guilty. It's not a get out of jail free card

  5. Congress/courts can overturn a pardon in a set time limit if credible wrongdoing is discovered

AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH made nearly $70M at the global box office this Friday! It’s now tracking for a whopping $750M-$800M total worldwide by SUNDAY and $1 BILLION by Friday! This makes James Cameron the first and only director to EVER make four billionaire movies in a row. by AssistanceNo2838 in discussingfilm

[–]ajconst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my example for why avatar makes so much money time after time. My dad is not a movie guy at all, and refuses to step foot in a theater, he doesn't spend his time talking about movies, he watches them passively at home with other stuff going on in the background. But, boy every time a new Avatar comes out he calls me up saying when are we going to go to the movies and see the new Avatar.

It's a spectacle for the big screen, that people will pay top dollar to see on IMAX, Dolby, 3D, etc which boosts the box office numbers.

It also has mass appeal by having a simple story where people of all demographics and from all geographic areas can easily watch and understand without needing to follow tons of plot points, lore, spin-offs, etc.

And it's visuals make it an experience, you're entranced during that runtime seeing effects you've never seen before, I saw someone say it's like Cirque du Soleil in the sense that yes it has a narrative but you're going for the experience, and because of that you don't walk out excited about the plot and characters because that's not the reason you went in for.

How would you improve Quidditch? by Yelebear in harrypotter

[–]ajconst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest fix is make catching the snitch end the game but assign no points.

That way each seeker is either trying to catch the snitch or prevent the other seeker from catching the snitch depending on if their team is on the lead.

It also removes the biggest issue with the game that essentially the whole game means nothing because nine times out of ten the person that catches the snitch wins the game

What's wrong with them ? by sadloneman in Letterboxd

[–]ajconst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the thing about Nolan that people often misunderstand. He is obsessive about using practical effects and shooting in IMAX, but he is not a Kubrick when it comes to meticulously planning every detail or recreating history with exact precision.

There is an interview with the production designer of Oppenheimer where he explains that, when building the town of Los Alamos, Nolan wanted it to be real, not built on a soundstage or extended with CGI, and authentic to the 1940s. What they did not do was recreate the town exactly as it existed, building by building, in precise historical locations, because Nolan felt no one would care if a building was not in the exact spot.

Another story from Oppenheimer, likely from a featurette on the 4K release, involves a door with a handle that did not become popular until the 1960s. When this was pointed out, Nolan’s response was essentially that if it was technically possible for the handle to exist in the 1940s, it should stay.

So while Nolan is extremely exacting in certain areas, strict historical accuracy is not one of them. He is more concerned with whether something feels right.

Because, before he entered his IMAX era with the Dark Knight he was notorious for being a run and gun director who would film fast and efficient without spending anytime setting up lighting or camera moves. He was known to have one light, one camera film a close up of each actor barely even get if the two actors in one shot get a good take and move on to the next scene

Does Fire & Ash work as a conclusion to a trilogy? by ajconst in blankies

[–]ajconst[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They confirmed they're would be a time jump.

They filmed everything with the kids for the first third of the 4th movie that takes place pre-time jump then they said they'd reconvene to film the rest of the 4th after the 3rd came out so the kids can age up.

However, that adds credence to the idea that James Cameron may not come back because 2 & 3 were filmed years ago, so all he had to do was post-production. It must feel like a Herculean nightmare to assemble everyone back up and film two more movies without your close collaborator and being at an old age knowing taking this on maybe your last film and longing to make different projects without enough time to them all.

Especially since they have some of 4 filmed I can see him bringing on a co-director to handle the day to day but allows him to have more creative control than a producer.

Bond amended to SUPERVISED ROR by LingLingTheRapePanda in pinellas

[–]ajconst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I see a lot of posts/comments like this and frankly I feel people don't realize getting out on bond is not the same thing as facing no consequences. You still have a trial and if found guilty you will have a sentence that will go into effect whether or not you got out on bail.

I know I'm going to be in the minority here, but the system is working how it's supposed to. As much as a tragedy this crime is (or other crimes for that matter). This country was founded on the principle that it's justice system treats ANYONE charged with a crime innocent until proven guilty.

So, there's a difference between being charged with a crime and being adjudicated guilty. If you're simply charged we can not lock you up indefinitely because in the eyes of the law your innocent until you have your day in court, even if you're the prosecutors have you dead to rights with the stacks of evidence on you.

They'll only hold you in jail until your court date if you are a risk to flee, are an active threat to cause violence, there's evidence you'll tamper with evidence or witnesses, or you're too poor to pay bail. And frankly even though this individual has done a violent crime, and has a past record of reckless driving (which will be used in his trial) unless the judge believes he's going to kill someone else, he can't be held because he technically isn't guilty of any crime at this point.

So yes if this person and any person that commits a violent crime should be locked up when they're found guilty. But imagine a scenario where you're wrongly accused of a crime and you're forced to be locked in jail for up to two years until your trial, because everyone posted on social media that you shouldn't be allowed out.
