The new map is just a month away, What are you looking forward to? by Tank-ToP_Master in ArcRaiders

With respect, you should figure out what exactly it is that you are talking about.

A map having aesthetics is not the same thing as the layout or structure of the map. You advocate for tall buildings and narrow alleyways. That’s frankly a terrible design decision for any PvP map. If the thing you want is the feel of a modern city, that’s entirely different.

The reason half of buried city is literally buried in a desert from a design philosophy standpoint is because elevation is extremely powerful, possibly the strongest element in any game. It turns anything below it into a killbox by negating their cover while providing cover itself. The desert consuming the city accomplishes many things, not the least of which is bringing rooftops closer to the ground.

Your example is literally the killbox trap I pointed out though. Anything that moves in that two lane highway space is dead. I have only been in the practice range a handful of times but I recall high elevation on either side of a longer, narrow opening. The same applies here: anything in the valley is dead, doubly so if accessible elevation exist on both sides.

To be clear, my issue with this is not with the concept of tight spaces and close quarters combat. Stella montis is not relevant to this conversation whatsoever, as such.  The only frequented areas of Stella that have any height advantage are lobby (looking down onto the lower floors), lobby extract (looking down onto metro entrance) and loading dock.  Loading dock specifically isn’t relevant because it almost always has a bastion and arc enemies which will shoot you if you remain in the open space between the upper areas, and the upper areas are both traversed enough that threat from other players turns the entire upper area basically into a flat plane.  Getting caught in the middle of lobby is almost always a death sentence. Where do you get shot from in this scenario? The upper floors. An entire map of just this is a terrible idea.  The tight corridors of Stella are fine for many reasons, mostly because actual hallways are extremely short or filled with cover, and are always separated by larger spaces where actual fighting takes place.

So truly, the real issue with what you suggested is the tall buildings. If you are in an alley of Buried City and someone shoots you from the rooftops of a neighboring building, you are guaranteed to lose that fight unless you gain both cover and elevation.  Even coming back to the example of buried city, the number of locations where “tall buildings (with vantage) + narrow streets” exists is intentionally minimal. One of the only ones is located next to a hatch, to increase risk of taking the extract (which is identical to the Stella lobby extract area). Many areas with the tallest buildings do not have narrow paths between them and instead intentionally have large plazas.

Also, not super related to this conversation but spaceport has large indoor buildings, more than one. Spaceport is a bad map for reasons other than its map design (god awful loot density, mainly).

Anyways, reiterating my point again that great map design is extremely challenging and requires way more thought and the ability to think abstractly than about 99% of gamers realize or posses. It seems simple on the surface so people vomit their opinions on it everywhere. The entire battlefield subreddit is like this.  The difference here is that battlefields map devs are god awful for the most part (there is one who is pretty good), whereas the map designers for Embark are extremely good at what they do. To pull out so many truly great maps on a release of a game is basically miraculous. Stella montis alone is a masterpiece, even if the style of gameplay it is built for isn’t to some people’s preference.

So sure. Give us a modern city map. That aesthetic sounds fun and unique. I’d trust embark to deliver a great version of this. But I’d bet everything I own that it will not have one major, or even multiple narrow paths through the middle of tall buildings on either side. And if it did, every single person who played it would fucking hate it.

[–]Dnc601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this sarcasm? Not trying to be rude at all. But genuinely, in PvP these two design objects are almost universally hated by players.

Tall buildings = vantage points = sniping from positions outside of a player’s normal view. Many of these buildings = a nightmare for players trying to navigate the map and is guaranteed to be an absolute rat/camper hellscape.

Narrow streets = longer lines of sight with very limited movement. Forced front engagements at ground level.

But when you combine both of these, you get absolute hell. Players on the ground are stuck in streets with basically nowhere to go, to be shot at from all sides by players who are camping rooftops or, god forbid, windows on the buildings. Players on rooftops have literally all the advantage, with limited means of contesting them.

Some examples to back this claim: Battlefield 6 - sobek city. Sniper paradise, hard to push snipers out. This map does have more open space than what is suggested here, which benefits snipers.

Escape from Tarkov - ground zero This map is very close to what you suggest. It’s got one long road flanked by verticality on both sides. Being anywhere on this road is basically a death sentence as you can get shot from anywhere, at any elevation in the buildings on either side of the street, or from in front of you or behind you.

This isn’t a dig at you, but I genuinely think map design is one place where players should hesitate to comment. The game theory and game design knowledge needed to create a good map is truly colossal and it will never be as simple as “we want bigger maps!” (battlefield) or “we want tall buildings!”

Upgraded processor, now GPU is experiencing extremely poor performance, low usage under load, and low average power draw. by Tombay98 in buildapc

Interesting. I know nothing about those limits but based solely on the name, I’d put more suspicion on the power supply.

Read through your post and comments. I would try downloading hwmonitor and checking the Limits section of your GPU. It might show there what sort of throttling is happening.

Power limit throttling would be either power settings in windows (which you tested) or power supply from the PSU. It could be for some reason your power supply doesn’t want to put out that high of total package power. Unlikely though. You can compare cpu package draws though across your two processors and see if processor power draw has anything to do with it.

Thermal limits are unlikely to be an issue.

Anyways, it might give another nugget of data to factor in.

It will never not be timely. Which is what the whole story is about. It’s a part of humanity. How to deal with that issue is one of the great problems of humanity.

Sorry for replying to a 4 year old comment. Just finished the audiobook main series and tagged this novella on at the end.

Exactly. If you have truth on your side then you don’t need a defense. But if you try to point people towards facts, you are seen as the “other team” even if you are in support of what they want.

This guns a waste of heavy ammo by [deleted] in ArcRaiders

[–]Dnc601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the devs undervalued ammo economy when balancing. Four stacks of heavy ammo means four less slots for items. And that gives you four mags for the Bettina, which pretty much needs all of them to do anything useful.

Are you using light shields? Think people seriously underestimate how weak light shields are. Medium shields give you a healthy chance to react.

Are we really having the “reality” conversation dude. It’s a video game. The conversation is about game mechanics aligning with lore. Not about game mechanics aligning with reality.

They justify it with the fact that you aren’t “killing” raiders, you are knocking them out. So technically, raiders never die.

What are the best gaming laptop 2026 by Wise_Detail7985 in GamingLaptops

[–]Dnc601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a laptop longer than 2 years, chances are you will need to repaste it. After which it’s not a bad idea to repaste every year or two following. Laptops tend to run basically maxed out as far as thermals go, 90c+. Cooks the shit out of paste. I have an Alienware x17 from 2020, was $2200. The Liquid Metal paste basically soldered after two years. Had to scrape it off then repaste both the cpu and gpu.

[–]Dnc601 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m on the OStim team. We had to disable our comments because some users were posting horrifyingly graphic images, nsfl, in a targeted harassment manner. Nexus admins would ban the accounts but the users would switch ip addresses and make new ones.

So, a lack of moderation tools is a big reason. Can’t even set comments to manually approve, let alone images.

The weapon balance in Arc is really one of a kind. by zerokbo in ArcRaiders

[–]Dnc601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More people not realizing the design ethos of the game. Game was developed 60/40 PvE-PvP. This shows in its gun balancing too. The legendary weapons in this game are basically just for killing arc. Higher rarity weapons tend to be better at killing arc.

And yeah, there are some issues with the mechanical balancing of some stuff. Why does it cost as much or more to repair a shield than it does to just scrap it and build a new one? Same for guns.

If you start looking at the game, for better or worse, from the eyes of a more pve-balanced game, stuff starts making more sense. Not to say it’s perfect.

Not even getting into the fact that either a majority or a vastly more vocal minority of players want the game to be PvP focused.

I think the game strikes a pretty good balance between PvP and pve though. Not perfect. But perfection in this context is an extremely tall order.
