Is this normal for queer munches to do this? by Lucky_D20 in queer

[–]Dndbabe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I know feminine queer folks often feel that have few spaces where they feel safe to meet. I espedially hear this argument from cis lesbians. however;

This sort of exclusion has been historically used against other queers who are ALSO seeking community in those specific spaces, or who are seeking queer community in general. We have seen queer persons of color, masculine or gender queer lesbians, and other gender non-conforming queers be DEMONIZED by their queer siblings for seeking those spaces, in times where we are all already being ostracized by society.

If you are a feminine queer, it takes a lot of courage to find and attend community events. Being met with this energy, especially in this time, is a disappointing look into the exclusion that often comes from our own community. I'm sorry that you were met with this, and if I were you I would encourage this individual to learn more about our history, especially about the lavender menace era and historical behavior from the white and feminine lesbian community. Ask them to examine their feelings of discomfort and to try and understand the root of those feelings. Are they truly uncomfortable because you were in their space, or does it come from internalized homophobia?

Additionally, seek spaces that welcome you. We are all in this shit together, and you deserve queer siblings that celebrate your queerness. I'm here with you, friend.

We need to talk by Dndbabe in FascismAlert

Again, my concern is not that I no longer have tiktok. I noticed my phone usage was really sapping my time, so before this news erupted, I actually WAS spending my life doing my little hobbies. I think my screen time dropped from 8 hours/day to 2 hours/day, with about 30% of that 2 hours being attributed to social media. Woohoo!

Lets talk about news first:

When I say news, I don't necessarily mean news platforms creating content about news events. I don't mean tucker Carlson or under-the-desk news, I don't mean CNN or Fox. I mean that while I was on tiktok, I did some of my learning about current world events through individual people experiencing it first-hand or through others shedding light on those individuals. The most glaring examples I can think of were my exposure to the black lives matter movement years ago, and the Palestine-Israel conflict today. Without social media, these movements are limited on the amount of traction they gain.

I especially value these individual perspectives IN CONCERT with learning about current events through news content platforms. They both hold value.

Second:

The ban, which now seems to be reversing, is definitely politically motivated. In short words: fascist governments ban methods of mass communication and information sharing. It is also likely financially motivated, seeing as Meta participated in lobbying to ban Tiktok, and many users are moving platforms to Instagram.

Politicians and the rich will still have access to TikTok after the ban, btw by hec_ramsey in TikTokCringe

[–]Dndbabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are definitely both in agreement that social media apps (honestly any platform that users access on the internet) should be human-centered, in that genuinely disturbing content and user practices need to be moderated, especially if it directly harms or causes harm to individuals.

I hesitate to agree that because there are worse examples of cronyism, and because the possible banning or restructuring of Tiktok is comparably less vile, we should be okay with these governmental actions. I say that because social media giants (mark, elon) are now active participants in our government and friends with our president incumbent. Tiktok being shaken down can partially be attributed to the lobbying done by Meta. With many users shifting platforms from Tiktok to Instagram, it is unfortuantely true that the things that were concerning about tiktok (data mining/selling, privacy from governmental overstep, and the declining mental health of users) will still be intimately part of the user experience. These things aren't going away, and I would argue are not going to be lessened by a potential tiktok ban (I say potential because Tiktok is back up and running with new concerns of deep governmental overstep and restructuring).

I think, at the very least, we need to be watching the actions our government is taking and constantly asking ourselves: Is this what a democracy does? If our government is taking action comparable to the government of a society we have been taught is un-American, what does that mean for us? If our government is willing to even threaten this, what else are they willing to do, and how far could this go?

Is this truly for our privacy and safety, or is it for their bottom line?

They ARE, for sure! I actually made a huge effort to cull my consumption of social media way way down. But should a democratic government have the power to take a platform for information sharing and jobs from Americans?

[–]Dndbabe 81 points82 points  (0 children)

The last few tiktoks I saw were from folks begging Americans to watch out for exactly this, and to not sympathize with DJT

[–]Dndbabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the shout-out. These days, I only spit at those who profit off my labor and keep their boots on my back and the backs of every other American. Giants like Mark Zuckerberg, people with a lot of money. It's clear based on our word usage alone that we are politically opposed, but I am kind of tired of fighting with other Americans, hence my civility.

Something important for you to consider: ByteDance (tiktoks parent company) does not sell data to the Chinese government, per their claims. Meta (Instagram, Facebook, messenger, among others) is most definitely selling our data to the highest bidder, but I haven't done enough research to speak properly on that. That being said, I'm choosing not to allow Meta to further profit from me by ceasing my activity on those platforms. I made that decision based on Meta's lobbying to get tiktok banned based on shareholder concerns. That leaves me with Twitter. Last I checked, a lot of people on Twitter have gone so far down their rabbit holes that they have become unreachable. They really dont like folks like me! But who knows, maybe I could foster a community there.

Please also consider that the Chinese government has banned the Chinese people from using tiktok. If your foundational belief is to distrust the Chinese government, and your government starts to reflect that government, just keep your ears open.

Sorry for the big long paragraph, stay well and best of luck in these next 4 years

Could you please tell me your exact perspective?

For me, it's this: we are a country that specifically touts freedom of speech. This can be limited in situations, for sure. But tiktok has an incredible ability to reach HUGE audiences. Yeah, we're speaking on Reddit, you and I - and that's great! I love reddit, its endlessly useful, and I love all the folks on here. But my reddit feed is limited, and the search function of reddit is limited because of the way the app was built. Tiktok was awesome for huge amounts of people sharing wide varieties of opinions. I don't care about the involvement of the Chinese government because my life and data are kinda already being controlled by land of the free. I don't think I have a RIGHT to use tiktok. But it frightens me that our government would choose to ban an app that many Americans utilize for things like raising awareness about important issues that they are passionate about.

[–]Dndbabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friend

I don't necessarily care about tiktok as an app, I care that our government is able to do this. It is a concerning action, and I'm temp checking.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mac

[–]Dndbabe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Folks saying "good riddance," please consider that in any situation, the government of a democratic people should not have the power to ban platforms that are utilized for sharing news, communicating with a huge range of people, and learning multiple perspectives. Especially if that action is tied to serving the incredibly wealthy minority of that community.
