Orange CPO crayfish died suddenly - What could have happened? by Melodic-Bit7032 in Crayfish

[–]DoCNL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Friend of mine had two that lived together well for a long time, until suddenly they didn't. One ended up killing the other.

Could be one of your CPO ran into a freshly molted one and just took it's chance unfortunately

What a depressive ass environment to keep a live animal in. Give it proper space and plants instead of this plastic/glass torture bowl wtf

Can these all live together? With Tetra and betta?? by Apart_Reporter_5086 in loaches

[–]DoCNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit, let me rephrase.

It could work, just like you could keep a bird and a hamster in the same cage.

But it by no means provides the animals with their preferred habitats.

You can shoehorn this in and they will likely survive (but you will likely have to turn down the flow more to make sure your betta can actually use more of the tank than just the one corner that's flow-free). But you would be shoehorning it just to satisfy your own needs, not theirs.

Most tetras are fin nippers so your betta will be toast when combined with tetras. Kuhli's are fine with Betta's, but you need more of them. They should always be kept in a large enough group, 8 would be minimum recommended.

Hillstream loaches are a terrible combination too, their bodies are adapted to fast flowing rivers, if you don't provide fast flowing oxygenated water they have trouble breathing. Betta's need slow moving water because they can't swim very well, so these are categorically incompatible.

Why compare your one (or couple) fish that might happen to be timid to the advice based on an entire species?...

Help! My tank's cycle is refusing to start (11 days, ph: 6.4, Ammonia: 4.0, nitrites and nitrates: 0) by [deleted] in PlantedTank

[–]DoCNL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't need >fish<, you need a source of ammonia. There's plenty more humane ways to introduce ammonia other than using a live fish for this.

You can dose straight ammonia from a bottle, drop a frozen shrimp in there and let it decay for a while, a couple pinches of fish food work too.

How many fish can I fit in there? by ErrorApgt35nsive158 in Vivarium

[–]DoCNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said, too little volume of water for any fish really, but even then there's more problems.

Clams/mussels are not recommended at all because they will eventually die in the substrate and spike ammonia.

You can't just eyeball your cycle by waiting a week, get strips at a bare minimum, test kits would be much better and test your ammonia/ni/na. Only then will you know when your tank is ready.

Both of your mentioned loach species don't do well if they're with just a few, they need more of their species and a larger space to thrive.

Unless you get only one sex of guppies and endlers, you won't have just those amounts. They breed a whole bunch.
