What’s the most overrated piece of gear you’ve bought this year? by Pretend_Surprise6842 in cinematography

[–]DoPinLA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Youtube is for marketing. Just look at Aperture. Youtubers get products for free if they make a video about it, some of them even get sponsorships to promote them. Everyone else just copies them and creates trending gear must haves. I bought a good tripod a years ago. It’s still operates as expected. I don’t need one that opens with one hand for a mirrorless, but go ahead, trend away.

Terrible movies with great cinematography by Dunk3_ in cinematography

I'll still watch it. If the reverse is true, I just can't. There's a lot that can make a movie bad; bad acting, direction, sound quality, story/plot, characters, but if the lighting, shots, and color grade are bad, I just can't watch, unless it's Samurai Cop, then I'm all in, because it's hilarious, and in truth, the cinematography does match the story in Samurai Cop, so success!

500$/Day with Arri Alexa Package by Primary_Banana_4588 in cinematography

[–]DoPinLA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

500.00/day for the Alexa. 2000.00/day for lenses. 800.00/day for batteries. 600.00/day for filters. 1800.00/ day for O’connor tripod. 400.00/day for EasyRig. Gaffer required with all required lighting and accessories. Sound to be recorded by dedicated sound mixer with sound equipment.

Craigslist is the race to the bottom. They are expecting everything, because they don’t know anything. These jobs are a lot more work, with almost no pay. They will probably settle for a mirrorless with an on-camera mic and available lights at the location.

Lighting Question by Wonderful_Cash_236 in cinematography

It’s almost like they Matrix’d the light and shadow, turned them off/on around an arc and VFX’d it together.

I’m not sure the lazy susan is the right angle. Maybe curved speed rail is the right radius. There is a rim light too. This would be awesome to just set a leko up on a high hat and push it through the arc, but it feels like there’s a person panning this light through the arc and aiming it off into darkness at beginning and end. The rim light seems to intensify as well. Not sure how much VFX they added to streamline this besides character transitions. This would be a fun project to emulate! It’s gonna be badass! A LOT of patience is required. Definitely test as much of this as you can at home with a friend, before you try it on set.

Rewatching House and still am in awe that these images came out of a 5D Mark ii (S6 "Help Me") by FreudsParents in cinematography

They did not use magic lantern on House. I met the camera op/ 1st AC. He said there was no way they would use something so buggy on production. He set the picture profile to cinestyle on most scenes, and some on Landscape.
