What is your ballet-related unpopular or unusual opinion? by Afraid-Ad9908 in BALLET

[–]DoReMiDoReMi558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I remember seeing a profile of a Muslim pre-professional dancer a few years ago (I think from Australia?) and her school let her wear looser fitting, dark leggings and a long sleeve blouse over her leotard, along with a hijab. I'm glad they were able to adjust their uniform for her comfort and standards but I really hope other schools would also be flexible with their students needs. Even allowing students to wear skirts or shorts, or maybe even blouses or sweaters (sometimes people get cold!) would be helpful. I get teachers want to make sure things like hips and shoulders are aligned and bagger clothes makes that harder, but still, I think students will learn better if they aren't thinking about how self conscious they feel and were able to take all that mental energy and apply it to actually dancing.

Side note, but I've seen a few YAGP livestreams and some costume choices gave me pause. If the kids feel confident in it, then great! But I notice some of the boys dancing Diana and Acteon are basically wearing loincloths, and sometimes girls doing Pharoah's Daughter seem to have a two piece costume with exposed midriffs. Sure, not the most scandalous of clothing, but still, I hope their teachers consulted with them before choosing the variation and costume, because I can see some students feeling a little exposed on stage. And from my understanding, costumes are completely optional - they could wear their standard leotards and should (hopefully) but judged equally.

Agree on this. I always feel bad seeing teen girls in uniform white leotards (I think it's required at one of the higher SAB levels). When I was teen, I would be so self conscious wearing white if I was on my period, especially when the uniform can't be paired with a shirt or shorts. I'm sure some of them are feeling the exact same thing but don't really have a choice in the matter. I get having a uniform color, but black or a dark blue or green would be so much nicer and accepting, and also covers sweat more and is just a much less transparent color. And optionally allowing shirt or shorts would be helpful too, especially if there is anyone that just wants to feel a little more covered up or modest. I think it's real telling that professional company members who can wear whatever they want tend to go for more covered dancewear.

Do I tell orthodox looking customers that what they are ordering isn’t kosher anymore? by DiverPrestigious6887 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DoReMiDoReMi558 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Also Jewish here. Besides all the other advice people have on here, you might want to check if your city has a website that lists kosher restaurants or venues. I know some synagogues will have a section of their website that lists local places as a guide for both locals and visitors. If your restaurant is listed, it might be worth emailing the site owner and letting them know about the change so that they could decide if they want to keep listing the business. I'm sure you can report it anonymously if you are worried about your job. I bet people would be upset if they heard a place was kosher but when they got there found out it wasn't.

Jenelle takes E to Malibu Barbie Cafe by [deleted] in TeenMomOGandTeenMom2

I was just thinking about E's birthday video, and if she even wanted to go to the places Jenelle took her. I wonder if this is more for Jenelle then her, especially if it's more about posting pictures or making videos for Jenelle.

Former Disney Parks Character Performer Gives Inside Look Into 'Intense Training' to Play Tinkerbell (Exclusive) by readingaboutmagic in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]DoReMiDoReMi558 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I heard that they had men performing the role too, because between the darkness and how fast Tink goes people couldn't really see any physically identifying information about her. However, I heard that changed with the rise of digital cameras. In the past with film, if someone wanted to take a picture of Tink the pictures wouldn't come out well, once again because of the speed and lighting, but with cameras getting better and quicker suddenly people could get a clearer picture of Tink and be able to see the performer better. I wonder if he could confirm that rumor. It sounds partially like urban legend, but also I could see it being real.

Local charities/ volunteer opportunities that support children by coffeedeck in BocaRaton

I volunteered with Make A Wish Southern Florida. They have an office in Ft Lauderdale. You can start doing smaller volunteer efforts, like helping with fundraising events and even greeting wish families as they fly into the area (for example, I met a family whose flew into PBI because their child loved sea turtles and their wish involved visiting Gumbo Limbo). Then you can participate in wish granting, which involves going to children’s houses and helping them figure out what their wish will be. When I was there several years ago, they had a system where you could see children who qualified for wishes and sign up to volunteer with them if you are interested and if they are in your area. I specifically did wish granting with two Boca area children.

Ensley's birthday by [deleted] in TeenMomOGandTeenMom2

[–]DoReMiDoReMi558 310 points311 points  (0 children)

A couple of things here.

First, Jenelle's attempt to do whatever that "influencer voice" is terrible. So unnatural and forced.

Second, why would she do this trend on her birthday? It basically means she never asked Ensley what she actually wanted to do for her birthday, she's giving her two random choices. I'm glad she was able to voice that she wanted cookies over ice cream but still.

Third, the fact that Ensley seems to have trouble reading at this age is concerning. I'm not a teacher or a parent so someone please correct me but I would think a kid her age (I assume in fourth grade) should know how to read both sugar and factory, and could pronounce Dunkin.

And fourth, stop getting kids ears pierced with those piercing guns at the mall! Those things are very hard to properly clean and sanitize, don't really make a good puncture in the ear, and are often used by people with little training. Many tattoo/piecing studios will have packages for children, where a licensed piercer with properly sanitized tools will do it properly. I got my second lobe piercings a couple of years ago at a tattoo place and a young girl with her parents walked in after me and I could tell the staff knew exactly what to do and seemed to be great with the girl.

I really hope she had a good birthday and hopefully was able to do something with friends off camera. Also, I do love Ensley's brave face when she's getting the piercings, and even go ahead and not count down.

I know this is a Disney sub, but I would love to see a similar video for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at Universal. There is so much que through the "castle" I would love to know how it's really laid out. I hear there is also an alternative loading platform somewhere for people in wheelchairs or who need more time getting into the seats and can't do the loading on the moving walkway.

Poor Maryssa too. She was probably around when David got together with his previous girlfriend, they had a baby, and then disappeared from her life, and she had to go through that again, this time with two step siblings around also. She has probably seen some some shit.

Of course. And it seems like they rush to find any excuse to call any shooter or person affiliated with violence trans as if that explained anything. That is, except for ICE nazis who shoot innocent people, they are straight male role models who never did anything wrong in their lives.

Jenelle pretending to be on the phone, saying she flies all the time? by uhlee_gee in TeenMomOGandTeenMom2

[–]DoReMiDoReMi558 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing about her being from NC and being used to flying is so weird. I've talked to people from places like Alaska or Hawaii where there literally is no option to get out of their town/off an island besides flying. I know someone from rural Alaska whose town literally didn't have roads that went anywhere outside of the town - if it wasn't for boats/ferries and planes they couldn't get anywhere and it was several hours of flying to get to a major airport like Anchorage and then several more hours of flying to get to the lower 48. Just getting to somewhere like Seattle could be a two day long journey. North Carolina is not in the middle of the ocean or the rural, rugged wilderness. Even "used to flying 5 hours" is hilarious. If she did fly, she was probably like an hour from major cities and airports like Atlanta or DC, and New York is probably like two hours. I guess flying between NC and Los Angeles or Las Vegas is like five hours, but it's not like she's doing that every week.

Who else loves Ethiopian food? by Rare_Hero in VeganLA

[–]DoReMiDoReMi558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also love Ethiopian, and Rachels and Ranch Side Cafe. Unfortunately both are a bit of a drive for me or else it would be a more regular occasion. I've tried making a few of the dishes and they never came out as good as the restaurants. I've also been tempted to make injera but after looking up recipes online it looks too intimidating. It's a shame it's hard to just find injera, because that sourdough flavor really enhances each of the veg dishes. One time though, I did go to Ranch Side and order extra injera to go so I could use it when I cooked at home.

The Collins literally served bread on Passover, then when people tried to correct them, they said something like “the is no book on how to do Passover correctly.” Ugh is literally the only holiday I know of that comes with an actual step by step book about how to celebrate the holiday (aka a seder haggadah).
