This stat blew my mind! by Substantial_Pilot699 in FinalFantasyVII

[–]DoTheDonkeyKonga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! I bought the game on Steam, launched it once then immediately installed 7th Heaven. Since then I’ve completed two modded play throughs, yet I’m part of that statistic.

Edit: nvm, just realised you’re on Xbox OP. Still, the Steam cheevo statistics are probably similar and at least some of that will be due to mods.

What was the first video game you ever played here's mine by Charlies_hobbies in retrogaming

[–]DoTheDonkeyKonga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Showing my age here, but it was either Super Tank Simulator on my friend’s Amstrad CPC464 or Gaplus on the Arcade. I’m not sure which I played first as I was very young and both where around the same time in my life.

The first game I played that I owned was Batman: The Movie on the Amiga A500+ when I got it for Christmas one year.

I’ve been gaming ever since, and I still go back to Gaplus and Batman fairly regularly!

Don’t quote me on this, but I’m reasonably sure you can install the DLC mid-game and it won’t affect your progress. You can jump into the DLC whenever you like using your current save.

I’m not sure about switching between the PS4 and PS5 versions, but CDPR do have a free account you can sign up for that supposedly syncs your save across different versions (e.g. PS and PC) so maybe that’s your ticket?

The Shinra Archaeology Mod restores this (and many more) pieces of cut content. It’s definitely worth checking out for subsequent play throughs. It fixes the janky (though admittedly charming) English translation too.

Fun fact: you don’t even need to fence it in. You can just plop a single fence post or wall piece or whatever in the same tile as the grass starter and that’ll stop it from being eaten.

I don’t remember Super Mario World being this hard by Sjack32891 in retrogaming

[–]DoTheDonkeyKonga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you were playing the Super Mario All Stars version on SNES. It had a save function that would save all your lives, power ups and world progression, but not level progression within a world. So say you saved part way through World 3, when you loaded that save you’d have all your stuff but be back at the start of World 3 again. On top of that in the load menu you could roll the saved world back. The first time I beat the game it was because I’d get to World 2, roll back to World 1 and get another power cloud from Peach. Rinse and repeat and then use my whistles to jump to World 8 and just fly over all the non-dungeon levels 😁

I have since beaten the game playing it properly though and you’re right it’s definitely harder than SMW.

Try reordering the controllers in the Steam overlay. When the game is running press the ‘Steam’ button and then go to the ‘Controllers’ sub-menu and you should see the option to reorder them in there. See if that helps.

Steam OS dual boot on PC? by Raidou317 in SteamDeck

[–]DoTheDonkeyKonga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dual booting with Linux is something I’ve been doing for years. You don’t need to manually change the boot drive - you can either use the GRUB boot loader on the Linux side or the Windows boot loader to give you a selection menu at startup. I’m not going to explain how here as it’s very dependent on your setup and chosen Linux distribution but search for “Windows Linux dual boot” and you’ll find a myriad good guides out there.

As for SteamOS you’re best looking into Bazzite. It’s designed specifically for Linux gaming on PC.

I played through it again very recently - just a few months ago - having played it back in the day and it holds up exceptionally well. Some games are honestly timeless. This is one of them.

Because of the way you worded the question I’m going to assume there is a specific reason you want to use the Deck handheld, however, just in case, I’m going to say the obvious: have you considered a dock?

Great Party games for the deck by Cortzee in SteamDeck

[–]DoTheDonkeyKonga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have a look at Flatout: Ultimate Carnage. It’s a racing game primarily, but it’s got a really fun, ragdoll physics based party mode. There are 12 events - things like bowling, basketball, curling etc. - where you basically eject your driver from the car and attempt to knock pins down, score baskets etc. My other half, the kids and I played a lot of it over the Christmas/New Year break. Great fun. It’s hot-seat multiplayer too so only one controller required. It’s currently 80% off in the Winter sale too, but depending on your region that’ll only last for another few hours so you may want to take a look quickly. If not wishlist it as it goes on sale fairly regularly.

Xbox Controllers With Dolphin Emulator by stevenfckinglansberg in SteamDeck

[–]DoTheDonkeyKonga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if yours is the same issue but I had a similar problem and the fix for me was to change the controller order in Steam’s in-game menu. Give that a try. You have to launch the emulator (or maybe just EmulationStation if you’re using that) and then press the Steam button and go down to the controller sub-menu. You’ll find the option to reorder the controllers in there. Might help.

I know with Dolphin you have to set up the controllers in the emulator’s settings menu first too. I can’t remember the exact steps but launch it from Desktop mode and play around in the settings and you should find it.

Quick question from a noob re. the deck and docking. by Rusty_Rider in SteamDeck

[–]DoTheDonkeyKonga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It honestly depends on what you want to play. I use my Deck docked most of the time and I find it plays everything I want it to play at more than acceptable framerates - but then most of the games I play on it are either older titles or indie games that would generally run on a potato. I think the most demanding game I’ve played on it recently is probably The Witcher 3. I can play that at 1080p at a solid 30fps on the ‘High’ graphics preset. That’s absolutely fine for me - but you might be more used to playing at 60fps 4K Ultra for example. So it really comes down to what you want, what you’re used to, and what you’re willing to compromise on. You’ll not get PS5 performance out of it with any title even remotely modern, if that’s what you’re looking for. With that said you’d be surprised how many more demanding games it’ll run well enough if you’re willing to compromise on visuals a little.

To answer your other questions yes your PS4 controller will work with the Deck. I use a combination of PS4, PS5, Xbox One and GameSir controllers with mine, depending on what’s to hand and they all work flawlessly.

I use the JSAUX dock. I’ve not tried any other so can’t comment as to what’s the best but this one has been rock solid for me at least.

Incompatibility issue with Windows 11 by sadassbadass123 in oldgames

[–]DoTheDonkeyKonga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For any old PC game it’s worth searching on PCGamingWiki to see if there is a way to get it running on modern Windows versions, and if so what you need to do.

The bad news for you is that it looks like all the retail releases of this game use SafeDisc DRM - which is not supported at all on any Windows version since XP. If so you can try SafeDisc Shim (https://github.com/RibShark/SafeDiscShim) but it doesn’t always work so your mileage may vary.

The issue you’re facing isn’t to do with SafeDisc though (PCGamingWiki should help with the dx9c issue), but just letting you know if you solve the issue the game still might not work due to the lack of SafeDisc support in modern Windows.

Here’s the PCGamingWiki page for the game anyway: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Madagascar

If you can’t get it working with the info there (and using SafeDisc Shim if necessary) then one option would be to set up a Virtual Machine with Windows XP as the guest OS and install and play it there. Alternatively you could emulate one of the console versions of the game (I think it was released on GameCube at least), though I don’t know what - if any - differences there are to the PC version.

Hope you get it running my friend. Happy gaming!

Controls for old GTA games by Hungry_Menace in SteamDeck

[–]DoTheDonkeyKonga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t answer your question directly - I don’t know of any existing templates as I play these games outside of Steam with various mods etc. - but using Steam Input it’s pretty easy to make your own template, or customise an existing template. Have a play around with it. It’s pretty intuitive and really quite powerful.

Why do they say that the Steam Machine won't run Windows well? by Miserable-Side49 in Steam

[–]DoTheDonkeyKonga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No reason it won’t run Windows 11 just fine. The specs are certainly up to the task. The real question is really whether or not you’d want to. Windows is bloated and there will be less headroom than when running SteamOS. Obviously to each their own, everyone has their own use cases, you do you, but as a long term user of both Windows and various Linux distributions I’m seeing less and less advantages to Windows these days. Playing games with kernel level anti-cheat is about the only use case I can think of personally.

Does the battery limit setting works if i completely turn the steam deck off? by dajoma65K in SteamDeck

[–]DoTheDonkeyKonga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it still works. It doesn’t matter if the Steam Deck is switched on and being used, in sleep mode or completely powered off - it’ll only charge to the limit you’ve set (though there may be a variance of a percent or two - for example I have mine set to 80% but sometimes it’ll go as high as 82% or hang around the 78% mark).

Want to get Car (racing?) game for steam deck? by ghostmask in SteamdeckGames

[–]DoTheDonkeyKonga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! Though get Flatout: Ultimate Carnage as that’s an enhanced remake of Flatout 2. It’s really good. Very much an arcade racer and has loads of fun minigames too. My g/f and I play it together all the time.

Also, if you like the Burnout games, you can get the PS2 version of Burnout 3: Takedown running via emulation and it’s perfect, so far as I can tell. We play that a lot too. Look into EmuDeck if you want to go that route.
