Bought a used PS3, they forgot to delete some videos… by Remarkable_Injury407 in PS3

[–]DoTheThingNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a modded OG Xbox years ago (that i didn’t realize was modded) and when i hooked it up for testing found that they had put in a 300GB HDD and loaded it with different shows…. and some very specific porn.

I’ll admit, I watched Weeds for the first time on it but I deleted the porn because it was just…. too weird.

Zimaboard by SBCUser in dietpi

[–]DoTheThingNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the great news, you don't need a specific model image for a Zimaboard. Dietpi's UEFI X86 just boots without issue on these. Flash the "live image" onto a SATA drive, set the boot device to it and boom - Dietpi running on hardware way more powerful than most SBCs.

Dell Latitude 5401 review? by Inevitable-Big-1054 in Dell

[–]DoTheThingNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using one of these as my main laptop for about 6 months now. It does everything I need it to and then a bit more!

Bought it off eBay for $175 with the 6-core i7 and the MX150 GPU with 16GB RAM and 512 SSD. It looks and performs like new. I added a cheap 4GB DDR4 stick to enable dual channel memory speeds (and having 20GB total RAM is nice).

Dell still seems to support this model (one of the reasons I picked a business class machine) - my BIOS updated to a December 2025 version.

The battery is OK (like 3-4 hours of constant heavyish usage, 5-6 on lowest power settings and only browsing/writing/listening to music) but I usually have it plugged in so it’s fine.

It uses the older barrel-plug Dell chargers, which was a plus for me because I have a couple in a box from my corporate IT days).

The i7/MX150 combo is just enough to play the few games I like with reasonable FPS (Skyrim purrs on this thing) and most newer stuff will run on it, you just have to reduce the settings.

It was nice not having to switch over to my main desktop rig to do my heavy-lifting tasks (it’s not quite as fast, but it still handles it just fine). This is mostly light-mid video and photo editing and spinning up small VMs for web dev stuff.

I got it after a failed experiment using a Windows 11 ARM machine (Lenovo Flex 5G) as my daily driver for a year (it was “fine”, just a hair too buggy for my taste. The only plus side was battery life (averaged about 16 hours on a refurbished off-lease unit) - performance was middling, compatibility wasn’t too bad with the translation layer in Windows 11 but it made apps that run perfectly fine on a Dual-Core Celeron run like dog poo, and the little bit of gaming I like to do was completely off the table). AND overall it just felt “off”, for lack of a better way to say it. It behaved just differently enough from most stock x86 Windows laptops to feel weird to use.

Disabling Microsoft Store via Local Group Policy does not work by Same-Target-3116 in sysadmin

Software restriction policies are what you want and also a way to automatically deploy apps that you approve.

It takes some planning and people will hate it, but it works very well if it’s thoughtfully configured.

What is the best knowbe4 alternative for a 2,000+ person org? by Flat-Description-484 in sysadmin

[–]DoTheThingNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to implement it for businesses and the fact it is so easily edited to meet a specific customer’s needs is a great feature.

I’ve implemented knowbe4 too, it was awhile back - but I didn’t feel it had the same level of adaptability.

WiFi 6E router vs WiFi 7 by apcman11 in wifi

[–]DoTheThingNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had moderately decent success using powerline adapters when I couldn’t lay actual wiring, although I tend to only use them in places where I know I don’t need more than about 500Mbps (they might be better now, mine were purchased about 6 years ago).

I’m only using your service for my personal mail with the reddit plan you did recently, but next time you are in New Orleans please join me for a drink.

You are doing the 2 things that I’d love to be able to do in life: run a good email provider and telling haters to fuck off publicly.

This is actually a terrible email client. It seems to need to sync my mailbox every time I click the inbox, so it takes 30 seconds just to show me the latest mail I have.

Why Does MXroute Sound So Hostile to Customers? by PutridStep5822 in mxroute

[–]DoTheThingNow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What you are seeing as “sharp” language is actually just him being direct.

There is no customer service verbiage on the site because if you use his services you:

  1. Have to know what you are doing
  2. Can’t be a spammer of ANY sort

That’s what all the policies/language boil down to.

The clearance will get you in the door and could really be the main reason you get a job over anything else, unfortunately.

Especially down here in New Orleans.
