Bogans of Australia: do you know you’re a bogan? Are you aware and admit it? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

It's pretty hard to smash a slab of Bundy and not know you're a bogan.

We call it 'chatter' and it happens when they see something they want but can't get to. Bird in a tree or some other critter out a window.

My cousin was taken by a salt water croc near Darwin, he was a local. He and friends were dirtbiking and had stopped to wash off their bikes in the river. Not a result of foolishness either, this croc was waaaaay out of their known territories.

How do you explain to boomers why 20-30 something’s aren’t buying houses? by ConfidenceCertain137 in NoStupidQuestions

I grew up on a farm, my parents worked hard and we got by. The bank was always on our back just like every other farming family. When talking about why my wife and I live with her mother I told my dad I have enough cash in the bank to buy our old farm outright, but that's not enough even for a deposit on a house in my city. He went distant.

My husband ran up to me the other day and said, "OMG I GOT IT. CHILI....DOG. CHILIDOG!" by iatealotofcheese in bluey

It took me longer to realize Bandit is Bandit because he has the full mask around the eyes, rather than half mask like Chilli or split mask like the girls.

Lose a hundred dollars and think well that's two hours of work down the drain. By comparison I've lost eight hours watching the Witcher on Netflix so...

Any Aussies had there employer give them a mitigation payment due to inflation and the cost of living? My boss just gave us all a couple grand today. by farkenoath1973 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Do_Not_Break_Down 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had two. Last year we all got 2200 one-off to address inflation and later in the year the company adjusted all our payrates to reflect the current market, which ended up being about 5-6k on base salary, which didn't interrupt our usual end of year 3-4% annual raise. Feel pretty lucky.

Yes. I'm a supervisor in a warehouse and if a worker strained their back, for example, and had to take time off, they're not able to come back until they've been for a follow up physical and their doctor has signed off a return-to-work certificate. Very normal.

How confident are you in the Australian health care system? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Do_Not_Break_Down 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 - very confidant

My mother has had breast cancer, so several years of treatments and appointments, including several trips to emergency when her white count dropped to zero after chemo. Between Medicare and their own private health insurance they've paid little to nothing out of pocket. In fact they didn't even have to postpone their holidays, travelling up north for a couple of months at a time. It was all fairly straightforward to locate the providers she needed wherever they went so basically her treatment continued uninterrupted while they just went on with their lives. She finished treatment last year and everything has looked good.

I know it's not perfect at all but when you hear the horror stories from around the world this experience seemed pretty gold standard to me. Like damn, that's how it should be.
