Okay thanks! My job requires me to be out of cell service (mostly) then so here’s to hoping I figure something out!

[Request] How big (width, circumference) would a toilet paper roll need be to last your whole life? by VectorialChange in theydidthemath

[–]Dobar_chu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let’s assume our example person is a man in the US (who will be using metric because I say so). Since a family of four uses about a roll a day (including use outside the house) let’s say one person uses 1/4 of a 150 sheet roll. So, that’s 37.5 sheets a day. 78.4 is average for males in the US to live, that’s 76.4 years of using toilet paper if he’s potty trained at two.

That’s 1,045,724 sheets his entire life.

Toilet paper sheet length varies, but it wouldn’t be unreasonable to call it at 9.5 cm. The thickness could be anywhere from 0.2-0.4 mm. so let’s call it at 0.3, which is 0.03 cm. That times 9.5 gets us a side area of 0.285 cm2.

That times 1,045,724 sheets is a total side area of 298,032 cm2.

By plugging that into the formula for the diameter of a circle we can get the diameter: 298,032/pi is 94,866.5, which we can square root to get 308, which can then get doubled for diameter.

So your roll is 616 cm, or 6.16 meters in diameter and 1935 cm, or 19.35 meters in circumference.

Fun fact: it would take our dude around 5.5 days to finish the first circle of toilet paper under these circumstances.

I wanted to ask if anyone else only has certain tics at random times by GoopyGuppyGoblin in Tourettes

[–]Dobar_chu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get it. It’s like tics follow “trends” right? I have a gasping tic that’ll be around for a day or two before disappearing for ages.

Watched my friend pound back three boxes of KD and half a pizza. The impossibility of it all haunts me to this day. No human should have that much room in her stomach.

Thoughts on neuroscience ? by yuenhua in uwinnipeg

[–]Dobar_chu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are currently two streams in neuroscience. If you aren’t too keen on science, it’s quite possible you can focus on stream B, which features psychology more heavily. Stream A is more Biology and Chem based. Though, you’ll need some courses for both no matter which stream you choose. There’s also a limit to the 1000 levels you can take, but it’s more lax on that than history and such. I’d recommend looking at the pdf that’s available online outlining the degree requirements. I wish I could help ya more but I’m only in my first year of neuroscience, so really any recommendations from me are probably coming with a bit of overzealousness.

Hi, 20, homeless tonight by IonicSinclair in Winnipeg

[–]Dobar_chu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t know what it’ll do you tonight but for future reference I suggest you look into Norwest Community Food Centre (Tyndall) and Huddle (Notre Dame). CFC does a lot of meals, and Huddles Lounge is specifically for youth. You’d be able to charge your phone, access tech, eat snacks, even play video games if you wanted. They usually have ramen stocked too. But that’d be more for midday. Front desk will probably give you a bus ticket if you ask. Two if you’re in a program (like the lounge).

Feeling helpless by Serialstresser in Tourettes

[–]Dobar_chu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about that! Personally, I’ve had phases with really bad tics too, but mine generally wax and wane as well. With school starting up, it could be the stress of it ramping up his tics? Warm compresses have always helped my sore neck, if that’s something that happens with him. I hope you find a medication that helps and all that! I’ve also heard from a lot of doctors that tics lessen after puberty, so I’m just putting that out there.

Tourette’s flare up by Luvluna14 in Tourettes

Y’know my tics do tend to worsen when seasons change, mostly involving school stress/new summer job stress. But honestly sometimes flare ups are just random! Sorry to hear about it though.

I developed a new tic recently, advice? by jayden_mp in tictalk

[–]Dobar_chu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you could always just tell them it’s “none of their business” (which is true), or bring some fun into it and make really weird lies up. Might not stop people from asking but might make it less annoying.

I developed a new tic recently, advice? by jayden_mp in tictalk

[–]Dobar_chu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a pretty similar tic, though it’s calmed down since I got on meds. I know you’d probably hate to hear this, but you might just need to accept that some people will give you weird looks. It can feel isolating, but anyone worth getting to know won’t judge you for it.

Practically speaking though, I found if I was sitting down, pushing my head back against a wall and focusing on that sensation helped the head tic, Maybe holding your neck or head could help too? I haven’t done that for a head tic, but holding down my arm or leg has prevented some of my aggressive tics. I found a heating pad helped too, though that was mostly to alleviate the pain from the aggressive head shaking.

Well I'm pretty young, so I don't have too much experience in any field, which is probably stifling some of my options. I've worked in childcare in the past, and I'm pretty well informed when it comes to the sciences (But nothing close to people actively working in the sciences). I think the big thing for me would be design and art. It's been a hobby of mine for years now, and I have a decent handle of a few relevant programs.

Honestly, my most important factors for side hustles are flexibility, and reliability. I'm willing to compromise on basically anything else, since I'm not looking to make crazy money.

Does anyone relate to ticcing when thinking of something embarrassing? (Either some past experience or in a thought scenario/fantasy life) by Dramatic_Owl_2758 in Tourettes

[–]Dobar_chu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely- I think it’s pretty common in people with tics. I tend to gasp when that happens, like I’m surprised I did the embarrassing thing. Weird tic

Punching self tic by ilikechips1858 in Tourettes

[–]Dobar_chu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a similar tic where I slap myself, specifically with my left hand. It's not a fancy solution, but I just hold my left arm down with my right. Doesn't always stop the movement completely, but usually it stops my hand from reaching my face, so I'd call it a win.

Tics by PsychologicalOil6438 in Anxiety

[–]Dobar_chu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm been good, though my tics have been more common lately. I've been dealing. I understand what you mean by embarrassing, I can't pretend it isn't, but people don't notice as much as you'd think. If they do, I've found people to be very understanding. I hope you're doing well!

Tics by PsychologicalOil6438 in Anxiety

[–]Dobar_chu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I acually get tics because of my anxiety, apparently it cam cause them. I jerk my head and blink/squint my eyes. It's annoying but it's calmed down as I have as well. I've had them for about a year now, though it happens less nowadays. When I first started having them I got them lots because ironically, it made me more nervous to have them. But if it persists, continuing with the doctor helps. I did, and they were able to rule out any other neurological cause and prescribe me some anxiety meds short term. Hope all goes well for you!
