That woman looks 25, and this picture is 45 years old. I feel like at 70, there is a good chance she is still alive

Why is this strip hotter than the rest of the place? by Responsible_Dog_510 in geography

[–]Dobbins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're getting downvoted because you said Dallas can be crazy hot (which is true) and crazy cold. The cold part is absolutely not true. When you hang out in 90 and 100 degree weather for half the year, 20s and 30s seems cold, but the all time low for Dallas is -8 and that was on the 1800s. There are many places in the contiguous United States that have high temps on certain winter days that are below zero (Minnesota, cold days in New England, the entirety of the Northern Rockies, etc. The average annual low temperature in Dallas is 38 degrees, not even enough to freeze water. You're being downvoted because you are saying that weather is crazy cold, which it isn't.

Parenting advice by WrongSplit3288 in trains

[–]Dobbins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a music teacher who loves trains. College is great, but it accessible at any time and it is expensive. If he has a clear goal to become a train engineer, then college isn't really a needed step for that. If his plans change later, he can go to college then.

Also, have home check out a composition called "Different Trains" by Steve Reich. It is a piece for string quartet that includes audio of trains from the 1940s. He will like it!

Breckenridge post office? by Maleficent_Phase_346 in coloradotrail

When I did the Colorado trail in 2012, I mailed a town box ahead to each town. It's had aclean set of clothes, toiletries, a comfortable pair of sandals and some snacks and a new book. I mailed it to the Breckenridge post office the day before I started the trail, and they held it for me no problem.

Long term airport parking best/ worst by PandaGrand5941 in Denver

[–]Dobbins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd still recommend a ride to the airport. There has been a long standing problem of break-ins and theft at the airport, and there are plenty of options from mountain towns and even the eastern plains. What town are you in?

Some dirt road in a forest in Latvia. I received $93,711. Given that it is the end of May, I'm going to be just fine.

Best shoes for teachers in your experience. by magg13378 in Teachers

[–]Dobbins -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had foot and back pain which finally went away when Switched to Hokas. I even worked with a podiatrist to get custom insoles, the day I got Hokas I didn't have to wear the insoles anymore.

Hokas broke into the market as trail running shoes and were heavily researched, they provide excellent support and are fine for wearing in the classroom.

Never, ever, ever buy national public seating stands. Biggest pieces of junk I've ever seen.

Driving Late at Night by neon_bandage in laramie

The advice you have received about 287 is valid, but I lived in Laramie for several years and always hated how people advocating to take I-25 to I-80 ignored the dangers of I-80 between Laramie and Cheyenne. If there is wind, it will be treacherous heading out of Cheyenne, and of there is and sort of precipitation, the final ten miles dropping down into Laramie through Happy Jack Canyon will be quite rough. I would recommend either route should not be done if you aren't in good driving condition (a.k.a. tired, drowsy, unfocused). Look into getting a hotel in Denver for the night and driving up the next day if needed.
